Vancouver photo workshops recently hosted a Master Class with celebrity portrait photographer Douglas Kirkland. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to photograph Douglas during his stay with the intent to make an iconic black & white portrait. The lighting set up was relatively simple. Three Dynalite’s were utilized to create the image. A background light was set on a floor stand directly behind the subject (just below the shoulders) with a 10-degree grid, adding a glow on the textured wall. The meter reading at the centre of this background light was 5.6. An XXS softbox with grid was used for the main (key) light and was boomed in directly over camera, within arms length of my subject and just above his head. This was also metered at 5.6.A third and final light (my fill light) was placed directly behind me with a softbox-umbrella modifier. The light reading for the fill light was 1-stop under the main exposure. For the post-processing, the image was converted to black and white with contrast and sharpness increased using Adobe Camera Raw. Finally, I created a border effect in Exposure 4 (a plug in for Adobe Photoshop).to give my image the classic “wet plate” photograph look and feel.

3Tips for Your Next Urban Travel Experienceby Richard Hulbert
Stabilize your Camera I have often been asked how I make such sharp images. Stabilizing your camera goes a long way to making sure your photographs are sharp. If you don’t carry a sturdy tripod, then a monopod or beanbag or a fencepost, wall, table top or hand railing can be used to brace your camera. If you insist on hand holding your camera, imagine squeezing the shutter release, not pushing or pressing it and use a higher shutter speed.
Know your Gear Today’s cameras are all capable of helping you create incredible images. The more familiar you are with your camera’s features the better. As you see the potential for a memorable moment unfolding before your eyes, arrange your camera’s settings so as you begin to anticipate the decisive moment, your camera will be ready when you activate the shutter release.
Tactfulness is Key Keep your camera hidden until a photo opportunity presents itself and then if a central figure is involved, respectfully request permission. Try to mingle with people and initiate a conversation about what they are doing or wearing or making. Gain their confidence. Then indicate that you would like their permission, not to necessarily photograph them personally, but to capture what they are doing along within their immediate context. Mention that you would like to make many images. Eventually, they will forget you are there and that is when you will start to capture the essence and spirit of the place and of the person.

Becoming A Better Fine Art Long Exposure Photographer
Exercise Your Vision. Be Inspired Don’t Just Imitate The Masters.
Looking at other photographer’s work can be very positive, motivating and inspiring. Your photography
may also be influenced by other visual artists, musicians, poets or even history. Whatever it might be, I do believe you’ve got to enjoy responsibly. Try to be
specific about what you like in someone elses work, use it to inform and inspire your own craft, but refrain
from simply copying ideas or techniques as this seldom leads to work that will fulfill and satisfy you.
Be Dedicated, Slow Down And Be Patient.
I love using tripods because they slow me down. And so does long exposure photography. But you have to
be careful to take advantage of the process and not let yourself be distracted. Don’t answer emails and get lost
on your smartphone. Use the precious time you have while the exposure is ‘forming’ to look around, consider
alternate angles, develop an appreciation and concise awareness for your surroundings. I bet it will make
you want to move your tripod in no time, and your photographs will improve in the process.
The image above was inspired by photographer Michael Kenna. The image I had in mind while composing this was a photograph of Michael’s of a single tree in the snow. My aim was to use negative space to strengthen the subject, and using color represents a new direction in my vision that I am excite do explore further.

Expose To The Right. Bracket.
Take multiple Images And Merge to create Stunning Panorama’s.
I freely admit that I enjoy the technical aspects of photography. Sometimes a bit too much. If you are technically minded, and want to get the highest quality long exposure photographs with whatever camera you use, make sure to ‘expose to the right’. Bracketing exposures and merging manually in Photoshop can solve high contrast problems, and panoramic photography can give you an angle of view of a lens you actually don’t own. And it’s surprisingly easy to do.

The images above are from my series entitled ‘Canadian Prairies’. It was very important to me to not only keep the subject matter consistant but also the format, look and feel of the images. This includes details like contrast, position of the horizon line, equipment used to photograph, exposure time, going out on cloudy days only etc.

goals. I believe it is critically important to spend time reviewing and looking at your
own work in depth. Make notes on whether you accomplished your goals. Be honest, yet
encouraging, with yourself.
Pick A Location, Keep Returning To Shoot There Until
You Are 100% Satisfied With Your Photographs.
This one is big. I believe that once you feel like you’ve accomplished all your goals for a given location you will feel much more
empowered to do it again somewhere else. I’d suggest starting with sea-scapes,
which tend to be easier to handle, and then progress to urban environments.
Shoot On Overcast Or Cloudy Days, Avoid Sunny And Contrasty
Light. Sunrise & Sunsets Are Best.
Quality of light makes a huge difference. Early risers and late bloomers will additionally be rewarded with
the ‘golden hour’ , the most beautiful light of the day. It is not always possible to wait for specific times to do
your photography, especially when traveling, but seeking overcast or cloudy conditions will give you a very good
opportunity to get high quality images nearly any time of day.

These two images (Right) illustrate
how ‘exposure time’ influences how a
viewer ‘reads’ your images. The first
image is a 60 second exposure and the
second is 32 minutes. The longer exposure
blurs the clouds so the eye goes to the subject
- the lighthouse. The dramatic clouds in
the shorter exposure, provides a great visual
counterpoint to the lighthouse.
Understand How Exposure Length Has An Influence That Is Technically & Compositionally Impor tantHow long should your exposure be? Well it depends. What is the effect your are looking for? A longer exposure will simplify your composition by removing details such as waves, moving people, traffic and detail in clouds. But it will do so at the expense of increasing noise. Depending on your location there may be restrictions as to how long you can photograph. The light maybe fading and the security guard had given you only a few more minutes before he promised to come back and ask you to leave. The majority of my images have been taken with exposure time ranging from 2 to 15 minutes. The average is around 4 minutes. Try several exposure lengths while in the same location. It won’t take much time and eliminates you second guessing yourself after.
Have 2 ND filters, instead of just 1
Take just 1 lens instead of 2.I use a minimum of 2 ND filters, a 10 stop, and a 6 stop. I can combine and stack both filters to take exposures of up to an hour (and even longer) no matter what time of day. Or I can use just one when shooting at sunrise or sunset, giving you ultimate flexibility. I’ll happily carry multiple filters but leave additional lenses at home. I find that what might seem restrictive, usually works to my advantage. Throughout my Iceland trip, I photographed with a single focal length. Too much gear can paralyze you.

Learn Post Production Techniques.
Understand How The Camera Sees Versus How You See.
When I switched from film to digital capture to do most of my long exposure photography I noticed my post production work increase dramatically. With film,
I was only having to make very minor adjustments. Despite the steep learning curve I now fully embrace
the ‘digital revolution’. Rather than considering my digital camera as a replacement for what I used to capture with film, I have learned to appreciate it as its own creative and distinct process. I enjoy being
able to do things I could only dream of 10 years ago. Post production, in my opinion, is an essential part of the digital photography process, especially with long
exposure photography. While photojournalists might be able to ‘get it in camera’, my photography is based
on taking the time needed to come away with an image that best illustrates my creative and artistic vision of a given location. The camera usually can only get me part way there. In the end, all that matters to me is the
finished photograph. How I got there, and whether I achieved it in-camera or on the computer is of virtually
no importance.
The final image looks rather different compared to the RAW file below. I cropped, converted to black and white, and did a lot of local tonal and contrast adjustments using software such as Silver Efex Pro 2 & Photoshop CS6.
Make prints! It is one of
the most rewarding activities any
photographer can practice.
Call me old fashioned but I believe the time I’ve spent making prints in the darkroom gave me a much deeper appreciation and excitement for photography. When I started in photography it was both a visual and tactile experience. Images look good on computer monitors, but there is absolutely no comparison to holding a fine-art print in your hands. I frequently make a print and then go back to fine-tune the image. Computer screens can be too forgiving and too detailed at the same time, and despite calibration on your own personal machine you can never ensure that your image will look consistent on other screens. As Ansel Adams once said “...the negative is the score, the print is the performance.”

The purpose of this course is to inspire creative shooting methods, expanding the portfolio while strengthening and/or discovering visual style. Join photographer Greg Gorman in this hands-on, intensive weekend workshop as he shares his lighting techniques both in the studio and on location. by Katie HuismanTips On How To Give Great Direction Pre-visualize what you want to achieve and communicate a clearly defined concept with your model. i.e. overall mood, style of lighting, type of crop/composition. Use Visual Reference like photo books or magazine tears that feature the type of pose you want to achieve and show this to your subject while shooting. Mirroring: Use your own body language or facial expression to show the model and have them mirror you. Always give the model positive feedback & encouragement.
What Not To Do Never criticize the model, even if the pose isn’t working say, “you are doing great, lets try something different”. Don’t expect the model to have ideas on how to pose, they can’t see through your lens.

S I L V E R & L I G H TIAN RUHTERT H E A L C H E M I S TA few short years ago, feelling disilusioned with the process of digital image making, Ian Ruhter began searching for something he felt he had lost. This search took him back to the 1850’s and a process known as collodian wet plate photography. To make his wet plates, Ian bulit the largest mobile camera in the world - out of an old delivery truck, which he refers to as a ‘time machine’. Back to the future, the time machine has taken him on a journey that far exceded his expectations. A vehicle to tell his story and the stories of those he photographs along the way. A story initially about the process but perhaps more importantly about the people.

What brings you to Vancouver?Three years ago I had a dream of building a camera that would let me make pictures in a way that represents how I see the world. This camera has allowed me to travel the way you would in a dream. I’m not sure how it happened, but this dream has led me to Vancouver. Did you ever imagine this project would be as successful as it has become and did you always envision this is where it would go?The journey this project has taken me on has exceeded my wildest expectations. I couldn’t have planned it better if I tried. “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” - John Lennon The beauty of it all is I have no idea where it will take me.How do you feel about how your work is affecting people, both the subjects and the viewer?This is far greater than just a photography project. Once we are removed from our socioeconomic status, race, religion and other labels that become attached to us, we find out we are all in search of the same thing. This project demonstrates the connection we share as we travel on this journey known as life.

Where is the most improbable place you would like to take your truck/camera? Where was the most improbable you have taken your truck/camera?
I think the Los Angeles river was one of the craziest places we have had the truck. The lawn of the White House.
This project has obviously been very successful in North America, has it gained much attention in other parts of the world? Have you
had any requests to take the truck overseas?
Yes. I get an enquiry once a week to bring the truck to Europe, Australia, Mexico, basically everywhere in the world. The problem is people ask but they haven’t worked on what it would take on their end to make it happen.
Do you have any intention to hold an exhibition of your work?
Yes of course I’d like to hold exhibitions. I’d love to be in the
Museum of Modern Art in New York. I also have thoughts of showing my work in a corn field in Kansas or in inner city neighbourhoods that do not have access to art. Basically I would like to bring it to the people. There are a lot of people that will never be able to step foot in a museum or don’t feel comfortable in that environment. These are the people that I’m photographing for this project.

that inspire you today or influenced you to pursue this project?
Yes there are a ton of photographers that inspire me but the greatest inspiration for this project has come from people who weren’t photographers. For example Leonardo Da Vinci, Albert Einstein, Paulo Coelho (The Alchemist) etc.
The videos you produce have played a big role in spreading word about what you are doing - was it always your intention to tell
your story this way and do you think this project would have been possible before the days of vimeo/you tube and social media?
Yes our intentions have always been to tell our story t his way. The subjects we choose for our videos are telling one story which is mine, and on the other hand it shows my story is the same as theirs. The ultimate goal is to show we are all connected in one way or another. No I do not believe it would be
possible to do this without the internet.
Are you any closer to doing your dream of a portrait of Obama?
Yes. Every day that passes brings me one step closer to accomplishing my goals.
What’s in the future?
What the future holds can only be determined by what we do in the present.
