Education: 4 year Degree in Photojournalism Top Schools: Boston University, RIT, and
Corcoran College
Portfolio: A strong portfolio is the most important asset
to getting work in photojournalism. Potential employers look at your portfolio, and
if it’s bad it doesn’t matter how much education you have.
Job Availability: There are no set amount of jobs in this
field. Many photojournalists are freelance.
Statistics: Median annual wage $30,000. 152,000 current employed as
photographers. Projected employment in 2018 is 169,000.
Photojournalists can work for newspapers, magazines, or can work freelance and sell their images.
Photojournalists are responsible for providing clear, high quality, truthful images, that communicate a meaningful message to their viewers.
Schedule: Freelance photographers get to make
their own hours. Photographers that work for a company
will typically work a 40 hour work week.
I personally like this career because of the situations you are put in and the traveling you get to do.
The career still does appeal to me.
I’d change the amount of money photographers make, it would be great if they made more.
