Stewardship-Sharing Our Treasure with the Community

“EVANGELICAL CATHOLIC” IS THE JULY RECIPIENT! My name is Briana Kelly. I graduated in May, 2013 from Iowa State University with a degree in materials engineering. The foundations of my faith started at St. Gabriel (then called St. Joseph’s) and this parish has a special place in my heart. Favorite memories include

Wednesday religion classes, volunteer activities, mission trips to North Carolina and Oklahoma, and the QUEST retreat. I am excited to announce that I will be a missionary with The Evangelical Catholic for the next two years. I will learn how to help students share the love of Christ with others at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during the first year of training. In the second year I will return to Iowa State to serve the campus ministry. This work would not be possible without emotional, prayerful and financial support. I hope to build a support team of individuals and families as I embark on this mission to love and serve students. Please give generously on July 6/7, 2013. Parish News

Dear Parishioners, Jesus talks about the radical nature of being his disciple in our gospel this weekend. To those who wish to follow him, he says, “Be prepared for hardship. Be prepared to have to leave everything behind. Be prepared to have to choose your faith in me over everything else.” It is a radical step. It is taking whatever currently occupies the center of our life – our self, our spouse, our kids, our job – and replacing it with our Lord. That personal decision to love God with all our heart, mind and soul is one that we all have to make for ourselves if we wish to be his disciple. Our parents cannot make it for us, our families cannot make it for us; we must choose discipleship. The temptation, of course, is to just coast, to drift along in our faith, to usually go to church, to pray every once in a while, to give enough to keep our conscience at bay. But a faith that is treated like that will crumble. A relationship with Jesus Christ that is not growing is dying; a person who is not getting closer to holiness is getting closer to wickedness. We must go all in. We must make that radical decision and say, “Yes, Lord! You are my center. You are my very life. Everything that I have and everything that I am, I give to you, take it. I will follow where you lead. I will go where you go. I will give up whatever I need to if it means being closer to you.” That is the radical nature of discipleship. That is what it means to truly follow Jesus. What does that look like in our daily lives? How do we know if we’ve put God in the center? We’ve all heard it before, and but I’ll say it again and again because it’s the truth: time, talent and treasure. “Lord, every second that I am alive is your gift to me, and I am grateful to you. I will use this time for your purpose. I will spend it in praise and worship of you, because you are my Lord and I love you more than anything.” “Lord, all the gifts that I have, I have received from you, and I am grateful to you. I will use them for your purpose. You have given me the ability to do things that no one else can do. I will use my talents to build up your kingdom, because you are my Lord and I love you more than anything.” “Lord, everything I have, I owe to your goodness, and I am grateful to you. You have given me resources to help perform your will. I will use them for your purpose. I will use this treasure to help build up your kingdom, because you are my Lord, and I love you more than anything.” That is what true, radical discipleship looks like. That is what it means to have Jesus Christ at the center of our life. That is what this parish is about. That is the reason for our very existence: we are a church of disciples. What we share in common is that we will give up everything to follow Jesus. -Fr. Liekhus

Parish News

Paint-A-Thon News St. Gabriel’s parish will be taking part in the 2013 Metro wide Paint-A-Thon. The Paint-A-Thon is a program put on by the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches and sponsored by the Valspar Corporation. Valspar inspects all places to be painted and supplies the paint. Each year teams paint between 60 to 75 homes in the metropolitan area. We have received our assignment, and since we are a new group they gave us an easy task. Normally, we would be assigned a house, but there is a person that has a large plank fence in need of repair and painting—that is our assignment. All the painting is scheduled to be completed the first Saturday in August—August 3 this year. Part of the team will do some pre-work earlier that week. I am talking with members of the St. Gabriel’s soft ball team to see if they want to take on this ministry as a way to end their season. I will also be looking for a small team to supply a nice lunch for the painters. Call the Parish Office if you are interested in helping. For anyone wanting more information on the Paint-A-Thon go to: paintathon.gmcc.org/index.php. God bless, Deacon Francis Tangney

¿O a nosotros?
