2011 ANNuAL REPORT

From the Sisters of the Presentation

This famous passage from Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans continues by naming particular gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to the Christian community. When we consider the Presentation High School community, it would be impossible to name and describe all the gifts of students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumnae, parents, alumnae parents, friends and benefactors who contribute to the well-being and success of this dynamic center of education.

A Presentation education, whether beginning with Nano Nagle in her schools in Cork, Ireland, or continuing today with Presentation High School, is all about recognizing, valuing and developing gifts. Nano could never have imagined Presentation High School in some ways. A robotics club, not to mention all the technology, clearly was beyond her experience.

However, in all the important ways, Nano would feel right at home with the school community created through the efforts of so many. The person-centered community, the academic excellence, the conscious development of each student’s gifts and talents, the extended community of supporters, and the generosity of sharing personal gifts would be very familiar to Nano.

This Annual Report celebrates some of the school community members and the gifts they give so freely. To all of you who give in so many ways, on behalf of the Sisters of the Presentation, I want to say thank you.

My prayer for you is that you will experience “that it is in giving that we receive” and that your gifts rebound to you many fold.

Sister Stephanie Still, PBVMPresidentSisters of the Presentation

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and not all the members have the same function, so too we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the favor bestowed on each of us.

2011 ANNuAL REPORT

IntroductionFrom frittatas to flowers, centerpieces to center stage, Presentation High School is fortunate to have an army of behind-the-scenes volunteers whose special talents touch every part of our campus.

Hour after hour, day after day – and, yes, year after year – these people show up, roll up their sleeves and do what they do best, whatever that means.

In this year’s Annual Report, which is a nod to our many generous

donors, we are pleased to also shine the spotlight on members of our community who donate in unusual, interesting and often unnoticed ways. We also learn about five students who saw a need that touched their hearts and raised their hand to say “I can help” – each doing so in her own unique way.

We hope you enjoy their stories, and we thank all of our donors and helpers for fostering the wonderful spirit of giving that makes Presentation such a special place.

“I had been to India a couple of times before and I had always passed by the slums and seen the poverty that existed there. When my family and I visited in 2008, I felt like it was my responsibility to do something, anything, to influence the lives of people in the slums. My mom and I brainstormed and we came up with the idea to collect shoes and take them to India.” “I called my project ‘Shoes from the Heart’ and my plan was to collect about 100 pairs of shoes in good condition. I advertised it all over my campus and in my neighborhood. The response was overwhelming. I collected over 500 pairs of shoes and a check for $300!” “My aunt who lived in India suggested that we donate the shoes to Sukrupa, a school where she had volunteered. Sukrupa means ‘good grace’ in Sanskrit, and the name perfectly summarizes this school and its owner, Krupa Martin Das. She was born and raised in India, but moved to the u.S. to do her MBA. One day she realized how lucky she was to have parents who emphasized education. She decided to do something for the less advantaged, so she moved back to India and started this school.”

“I had the opportunity to hand out shoes to the students, take a tour of the school, and see the classes. This day was so life-changing for me.” “These children live in shacks and have very little to eat. Often their parents do not support education because it cuts into their time begging on the streets. Sukrupa is the light at the end

of the tunnel for families in the slums, giving kids a uniform, a hot breakfast and lunch, school supplies and most importantly skills for a better future. They are educated in math, science, English, French, German and the local language.” “When I went to this school, they sang songs for me and showed me their homework. Ever since then, I have wanted to raise money and do whatever I can to help the school’s director, who has become one of my role models. Not only has she created a school of about 350 students but she adopted 10 children who now live with her. If she can make such a big commitment to the poor, I can host fundraisers to help her achieve her goals. Now I try to host one fundraiser a semester for her.” “The shoes project was my first fundraiser, and since I came to Presentation I have sold baked goods, root beer floats and donuts. With these three fundraisers at Pres, I have collected about $550, plus another $500 from outside the school. The director estimates that it takes around $1 per day to fund a child, so the $1,050 I raised funded approximately three students in this past year.” “Volunteering is a way to take a break from our lives and do something for someone else. Small actions can have big results. It is a very humbling experience, because you realize how fortunate you are. It teaches you to never take things for granted.”

2011 ANNuAL REPORT

“My mother and father emigrated through New York’s Ellis Island from Sicily at the turn of the 20th century and settled in the North End of Boston and later to East Boston’s Sicilian section. As with most Sicilian and Italian families, food was the primary topic in our home. My father and his father (Nonno) who lived with us did most of the cooking on weekends. ‘Sunday Gravy’ was a given. Rigatoni was generally the pasta used, and a variety of meats were cooked in the ‘gravy.’ Homemade ciabatta or foccacia were used to soak up any sauce left in your dish. The noon meal would no sooner be over when discussion would start on what the evening meal should be!” “Nonno, like many others, differentiated Italians and Sicilians. He was critical of Italian cooking and would point out what he considered their deficiencies. They used more cream than tomatoes; they were more fond of polenta and rice rather than pasta; they used more butter than good olive oil; they didn’t use fresh basil in their cooking, but converted it to ‘pesto;’ and they were known to mix potatoes with flour to create a dumpling, and not to confuse it with something Central European, they named them ‘gnocchi.’ understand that Nonno thought using two starches on a single meal to be a grave sin.” “I was born in the middle of our nation’s worst depression, yet in a home that was filled with warmth, love and happiness and somehow or another never lacked for food. I can recall during some tougher times when a single

6-pound capon would be used for three meals for our family of six. It was first roasted and served with veggie and a pasta. The leftover chicken was then shredded and used in a frittata with potatoes and onions and served with foccacia bread, and then finally the bones were used to make a soup with pastina and veggies and served with ciabatta bread.”

“My favorite things to make are what people ask for most. For appetizers, Angel Cheese Rolls, pizza, stuffed mushrooms and garlicky shrimp. My favorite soups are pasta fazool, roasted tomato, zucchini and lentil barley. I have a whole variety of 20-minute pastas, and my absolute favorite, lasagna and ‘Sunday Gravy.’ Entrees are mostly chicken … Marsala, Milanese, Cacciatore and Parmesan, as well as pulled pork. For veggies I like roasted broccoli, sauteed stringbeans and sauteed spinach.” “Why do I contribute these efforts even though my daughter graduated almost three years ago? I guess my first response is, why not? I am one of many parents who do this. My reason is to show my appreciation for what the school did for my daughter. She came to Presentation a timid teenager somewhat lacking in confidence and formalized academic learning. She left a confident young woman who can tackle most endeavors

and understands now it is no longer just a ‘man’s world.’ It was priceless what Presentation did for her, and my continued efforts are payback. There is a room in my heart I call Presentation, and as long I am able I will continue to contribute my talents and time to this great school.”

Who isPhil Micciche Parent Board stalwart and chef extraordinaire

Phil’s contributions to the minds, hearts and — let’s face it — stomachs of Presentation High School is legendary. For five years he has overseen the preparation of 2,500 appetizers for the Crab and Pasta Feed, prepared side dishes for the Senior Dinner and Incoming Frosh BBQ, and appetizers for Incoming Frosh Parent Night. At the Mother-Daughter Breakfast he oversaw his fellow volunteers as they whipped up frittatas for 800 guests, and each semester he and other Parent Board members treat the faculty and staff to a scrumptious lunch — Phil’s famous lasagne in the fall and a scrumptious soup in the winter. He has hosted cooking-class fundraisers at his home, auctioned off several “Godfather Dinners” and even organized a pulled-pork dinner and Texas Hold ’Em Tournament, a fundraiser for auction. Phil is responsible for more satisfied smiles at Presentation than you could shake a wooden spoon at. Here’s to the chef!

Phil’s advice: “My favorite tip is to layer seasoning, meaning as you add layers of items to a recipe season them individually.”

It simply wouldn’t be Mag Drive without this number-crunching twosome! Norma has been volunteering for this important fundraiser for over 20 years, and Bill joined the effort after he retired 12 years ago. Each fall they and other volunteers gather on Mag Drive counting days. They huddle around the table, fingers busily punching at calculators as they add up the money and verify subscription amounts. In past years they were also relied on to provide a list of students who sold enough magazines to earn T-shirts and stuffed animals, plus the names of Top 10 students for that day. Though the business of the day is important, Norma and Bill also do what they can to make it a fun experience, particularly for new volunteers. And Mag Drive is a family affair for the Jeungs, whose daughters are among the highest sellers in school history – Beth ’97 holds the No. 1 ($8,223) and No. 3 ($5,024) spots, and Karen (’93) is No. 8 ($4,379.) Mag Drive profits are part of the school’s operating budget, so this duty may be a simple one, but it’s also essential, and we are so grateful to the Jeungs for their longtime and loyal support of the girls at Presentation High School. Bill shares some of the highlights of their service:

“Initially mom volunteered to help when our first daughter, Karen, entered PHS in 1990, just to get involved with the PHS community. Later, I got the ‘calling.’ When our second daughter, Elizabeth, got to Pres, we made sure we were still available. Gloria Hernandez (former Vice Principal of Student Activities) knew to send us the Mag Drive schedule as soon as it is defined. She also lured me there every year with the great chorizo breakfast burritos!”

“The idea of handling cash and checks is not difficult. We count money and subscriptions. A little time management with work and other activities is necessary for any commitment. The casual conversations among other volunteers is refreshing, as we listen to their busy schedules and yet, willingness to help at Pres.” “Why do we continue to help, even after our girls have graduated? We try to set an

example. We believe Pres did a tremendous job, academically and socially with our girls. It’s our way to show gratitude for the great job that Pres did for our kids. It also shows our kids (ages 33, 36 and 39) that our gratitude to their schools did not end when they graduated, and perhaps when they have the time, they can also volunteer.”

Who are

Norma andBill Jeung

Bill’s advice: “We recommend all parents get involved in the Pres community. It’s a chance to learn more about our school and also get a feel for the camaraderie among volunteers.”

School ProgramsWhen parents, alumnae and friends of Presentation see a specific program in need of assistance or find a wish list item that touches their heart, they may choose to make a contribution specifically for that item. Athletics, Community Involvement, Performing Arts and more have all reaped the benefits of such generosity.

2011 ANNuAL REPORT

David’s advice: “I am firmly convinced that being an active member of the Robotics Team for a single season is about as much engineering experience as many engineers get in their first job out of college, particularly when they work at larger companies. A couple of years of high school robotics and a full college program puts kids at a huge advantage in the workplace.”

Robots shooting basketballs. “Mini-bots” climbing towers. “Moon rocks,” “tetras” and “ubertubes.” Sounds fun, right? That’s the beauty of robotics – high-level engineering concepts and hands-on science, all combined with loads of fun. Perhaps that’s why David Simpson spends almost as much time helping Presentation’s Robotics Team as he does at his regular job, sometimes over 30 hours per week. David, who is executive vice president of Video Propulsion Interactive, has been helping students design a robot for the uS FIRST Robotics Competition for five years, including the years his daughter, Erin ’09, was involved. He offers gentle guidance while letting students make decisions. He doesn’t tell them what to do, but asks questions and pokes holes in their ideas when they get too ambitious. under his guidance, the girls learn necessary, practical skills to build a robot for the annual FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition, helping them navigate many types of engineering along the way, including mechanical, electrical and software. He also does community outreach, working with the American Association of university Women and helping the team build a robotic T-shirt “cannon” to promote robotics to the school. His commitment to helping young women become engineers will help shape the future of technology in this area and across the country.

“Most of our team members have almost zero experience with anything mechanical or electrical when they start with us. A few have some knowledge of software through web design. So it’s always fun to watch them get through the ‘confidence barrier’ where they start realizing they can do almost anything if they are willing to ask a couple of questions. When Pres girls start pushing away mentors because they know they can handle things themselves, that’s exactly

what we are trying to achieve.”

“Recently will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas has become heavily involved in high school robotics. He produced and paid for an hourlong special on ABC in September promoting robotics, recruiting a number of well-known performers and stars to help. Plus he and the Black Eyed Peas have signed on to perform at the robotics world championships for many years in the future at no charge. Check out the short video he put together on YouTube (search for “My Robot is

Better than Your Robot.”) I think everyone should watch it.”

“Engineers, mathematicians and other scientists will make a huge difference in a world with many problems. The united States currently graduates only a few of the world’s engineers, mathematicians and scientists but still has the best universities in the world. Programs such as robotics can open their eyes to the fact that people in STEM fields have exciting and meaningful careers, plus they can be cool doing it.”

2011 ANNuAL REPORT

“I took Social Justice last semester and we learned about child soldiers and ‘justice and

dignity’ for one unit. We looked at different countries that had problems with justice, such as Rwanda, uganda, Congo and others. Then we read ‘An Ordinary Man’ by Paul Rusesabagina. That is when it all truly hit me – the fact that all of this was actually happening. It is an account of a man who saved so many people’s lives during a genocide, and he was so humble about it. It became real to me because of how honest he was throughout the story. Imagining losing my family and my friends all fighting against each other … it really changed me and encouraged me to want to help.”

“After reading the book and discussing it in class, I thought, ‘Yeah, one day I’ll help.’ Then our teacher brought in a magazine from Seattle university that included an article from a priest who escaped the Rwandan genocide, Fr. Jean Baptiste Ganza. He and others are building a secondary school in Rwanda, and

he gave contact information if anyone was willing to donate. At that point I said ‘I’m going to help.’”

“I started to think of simple ways to get money, and I decided to throw a dance! It seemed like a great way to get friends together and raise money at once. I looked up cheap community centers on the internet that would hold events with the size and price that I wanted and finally found Willow Glen Community Center. They lowered the price a little bit because it was a fundraiser. Then I had to find a DJ, decide a price to get in, advertise, etc. At the dance, I had a slideshow going of pictures of kids in Rwanda and the school that is being built, which is called St. Ignatius Secondary School.”

“We also did a raffle during the dance to raise extra money, and some families gave donations. I raised $1,182. I was so excited that I raised over $1,000! After expenses of putting on the dance (facility, DJ, mandatory police) I gave the school in Rwanda $678. This was an awesome experience because I learned a lot about planning an event and working with others. I realized a lot of life lessons that I can carry on with me forever.”

“SEWA Rural (Society for Education Welfare and Action) is an organization located in the state of Gujarat in India, in an area that is heavily impoverished. More than half the people are illiterate, every third family is living below the poverty line, and of every 12 children born, one is destined to die before his/her first birthday. SEWA offers health care services and education programs. My fundraising money will support

the Women’s Development Project, which teaches crafts such as garment manufacturing to help them make money. The project also includes a savings and credit program that works to reduce their dependence on lenders and prevent them from getting into perpetual debt.”

“SEWA Rural’s mission to educate and better the lives of the impoverished stuck with me. The organization was founded by doctors who lived in the united States but moved to India, raised money and built a hospital. They were willing to give up their comfortable lives to help those who needed their expertise the most. This profound act of charity inspired me to do as

much as I can for the cause.”

“To raise money, I held two bake sales. With the help of my friends I was able to sell all the baked goods, and thanks to donations I made $150. Although this may not seem like much, each dollar is equivalent to about 52 rupees. So in India this is worth about 7,800 rupees.”

“I realize that I am probably more privileged than others in the world because I am able to go to a private school, have a roof to live under, and don’t have to worry about my next meal. However, these are not things that all people have. I feel that it is the responsibility of those who are more privileged to help those in need.”

“Find something you are passionate about, because if you care about the cause you will put your heart into it. Work around your schedule and try to find the best times to volunteer. In the end, it doesn’t matter how much you do or how many times you do it, all that matters is that you gave back and did so with an open heart.”

They chat on Facebook, hang out at happy hours, eat at Aqui … what, that doesn’t sound like service to Pres? Well, it is for the Young Alumnae Board! These passionate under-30 alums are keeping their fellow Pres girls in touch with each other and engaged with the school. Several years ago a small group of alums faced the challenge of connecting with their former classmates, and they leaped into action … not words but deeds, right? They started a Facebook group, the Young Alumnae Group, and in less than a year it gained more than 600 fans. The YAB has also arranged fundraiser nights at Aqui Cal-Mex and Chevy’s; a happy hour social at The Old Pro in Palo Alto; and even a joint event with Bellarmine’s Young Alum group at Los Gatos Bar and Grill that raised over $1,000 in funds for the Presentation High School Direct Aid Scholarship. The volunteers of this board work hard to remind alums that every dollar, every hour, every relationship is a vital to helping our community thrive. They are the reminders that the bond we shared as students didn’t end with graduation. Here are two of the founding members: “I have always felt that Presentation had a large impact in my own personal growth and career, as do the other

active YAB board members. We donate our time to this organization because we believe in Presentation and the power of our community. The more engaged we get our young alums with Presentation, the more success we have

providing financial support to those in need; strengthening our community for future generations. It takes more than reunions to foster community – it takes active participation.” - Michelle Cassidy ‘99 “The Young Alumnae Board is important to me because Presentation has given me so much. Not only did I benefit from a phenomenal education, but being a graduate of Presentation has opened up a lot of doors for me both personally and professionally. I want other young alumnae to realize the power of this connection.” - Beth Gutto ‘99

“My advice is to get involved in whatever way you feel the most comfortable. Presentation will not turn away anyone wanting to get involved. I would also encourage alums to get in contact with the alumnae department. Alumnae Director Kristin Schneider is always seeking new, creative ways for alumnae to become reacquainted with PHS. The sky is the limit.” - Beth Gutto ‘99

“I went on the Freshman urban Plunge and was very moved by the whole experience; at the end of the day, we spent some time at Casa de Clara making dinner for the residents and I came away wanting to help that charity as much as possible.”

“For my 16th birthday party, I requested that instead of gifts, guests make a donation to my favorite charity. Every guest embraced the request and gave $20 per person; a few people forgot on the day and sent checks made out to Casa de Clara a few days later. Everyone gave … girls and guys … they were so great!” “Giving to others is a way of life … embrace it! Recognize that there are always people who are going to be less fortunate, and if you have it to give, do it!”

2011 ANNuAL REPORT

Simply put, Jim Houle brings beauty to Presentation High School. Much of his work can be seen on the stage of the Valenzuela Theater, where Jim directs our main stage productions, a fall musical and a spring drama every year. He also helps put on several International Thespian Society shows each year. Jim moderates the TADA! performing arts booster group – personally directing one of their fundraiser shows and taking on major production responsibilities for the other – and he runs the summer PresRep program, which does at least one major show per summer. He even handles set design and lighting for the Dance Cabaret and Choir performances. And yet somehow – amid the chaos of sets and costumes and hundreds of actors and tech crew members – Jim finds the time to add a simpler kind of artistry to our school. When he’s not backstage, you may spot him crouched over a tiny cactus next to the Center or planting bulbs along the front lawn. Presentation is grateful for the beauty Jim brings to the big stage – and the nooks and crannies – of our beloved campus. “My earliest childhood memory is walking through my Sicilian grandfather’s massive garden (at least it seemed big at the time) thinking ‘someday I want to make one of these,’ so I guess it’s in my blood. Since I spend so much time in a dark theater, it is always a pleasure to spend a few minutes outside, even if it involves weeding. Plants don’t talk back or make excuses, so the older I get, the more time I like to spend with plants.” “In my second year here, one day I arrived to

find the shrubs and annuals that surrounded the Mary statue in the courtyard had been removed and several flats of pansies were waiting to be planted. I think annuals are a waste of money as they only grow a few months and then die. So I

suggested that maybe we plant something less wasteful. ‘We’ became ‘me’ and I haven’t looked back. Now that garden has succulents and cacti that are five years old and are well-established with large aloe flower spikes every winter and yellow nasturtium vines in bloom all summer. As this is the focal point of the campus, I am proudest of this patch, especially now that the plants are so mature. I have used cuttings from this garden to plant the two boxes in the front

as well as the new theater gardens.” “I have developed a style that relies heavily on low-maintenance, low-water plants with rocks, gravel and fountains as ornaments. I tend to plant succulents and cacti as they live forever and require minimal watering and care. The first thing I do when I take over an area is shut off the sprinkler system. I hand-water all my gardens in the summer and let nature water the rest of the year.” “It is not a problem for me to spend time gardening at Pres because this school has given me so much, so it is my way of giving back. I know that a 14-year-old girl does not always notice a new planting, but I am confident that enhancing our environment is a positive experience for all. I especially like bulb season when the gardens are ablaze with yellow daffodils. Even a 14-year-old notices that!”

Jim’s advice:

“Start with a small

patch and plant

succulents. In a

few months you

will be able to

cut new growth

from the mother

plants to cultivate

new areas. Plus

succulents don’t

mind if you go

on vacation for

three weeks. But

be careful: They

are addictive, and

several faculty

members already

have succulent

gardens at their

homes!”

2011 ANNuAL REPORT

If you have ever stepped up to the big window of the Presentation High School Booster Store to snap up a PHS sweatshirt, license-plate frame or a blue and gold pencil, you have probably encountered the smiling faces of Elaine Chiu and Linda Hagarty. Nearly three years ago, this dynamic duo took over the store with a spirit and energy that has transformed this little room into a regular bonanza of Blue and Gold. Not only do they maintain the store’s extensive inventory – which also includes coffee mugs, key rings, umbrellas and bibs – they recruit and train other volunteers and even decorate the shelves and display window for holidays. This multitude of efforts has resulted in a spike in sales, which spells good news for the athletes of Presentation High School whom the money supports. Though Elaine and Linda will be handing the reins over to a new volunteer coordinator this spring, we know their hard work will pay off for many years to come!

“Elaine and I were excited to take on the challenge of improving the store. We both shared the same ideas and goals ... make it more accessible, organized, appealing and fun! Seasonal decorations and changing window displays,

working with many great volunteers and athletic department staff, interacting with students and parents who are excited to buy merchandise at the store have all made it a very rewarding and successful adventure.” – Linda Hagarty

“I have no special talents! I just enjoy being able to help out where and when I can. I love being involved and find

that Pres truly appreciates its parent volunteers. I’ve always felt welcomed and appreciated, and that’s the rewarding part. To be able to give of yourself – and for someone to be grateful for whatever you can contribute – is a gift in itself. I am reminded of this every time I volunteer at the school. Someone is always saying ‘Thank you!’”- Elaine Chiu

“I’ve so enjoyed working on Food Drive/Penny Drive/Toy Drive with the CI group as well as Mag Drive for many years. I’ve also helped

out with various committees for Fashion Show, Auction, Incoming Frosh BBQ, decorating for the Black and White Ball, the Speech and Debate Team, and, of course, mailings! I’m continuing to come back even though my daughters have graduated. The eight years at Pres went by so quickly and I can’t believe they’re done with high school. It’s truly a pleasure to be part of the Pres family!” – Elaine Chiu

Countless faces have graced the stage at the Valenzuela Theater over the years, with appearances that have frightened, amused, saddened and delighted fans of Presentation’s Performing Arts Program. And for that we must thank Cynthia Rose, who eight years ago joined the program’s booster group – the Theater Arts Development Association, better known as TADA! Cynthia has volunteered for many Presentation shows as an usher and running concessions, but she is best known for her talents in coordinating stage makeup for each show. About a month before each opening, she meets with Performing Arts Director Jim Houle to discuss what each character will require, shops for all the makeup and supplies, and then teaches classes to volunteers who will help with the show. Cynthia – who by day is a project manager in Cisco manufacturing – first got involved with theatrical makeup 12 years ago when her daughter was in the San Jose Children’s Musical Theater, and at Pres she has been teaching theatrical makeup classes for the summer production, the fall musical and the spring comedy/drama since 2005. Though her daughter graduated in 2010, Cynthia continues her work with the students, most recently with Phantom of the Opera, which took Presentation by storm last fall. For her humor, high spirits and knack with a smudge brush and false eyelashes, we offer Cynthia a standing ovation.

“I learned all I know from the web and from other make-up artists at CMT. I have always had an interest in makeup, but I have never been on stage myself. I love the reality show ‘Face Off’!”

“Facial hair is a specialty. I often purchase and teach the students how to apply mustaches, beards, side burns, goatees and I can make a five o’clock shadow with makeup on anyone!” “Phantom of the Opera was the most challenging and fun. I traveled to San Francisco and many other stores in the Bay Area to purchase makeup and try to create the gory face of the Phantom. There were also so many types of opera makeup that I did not know about … il muto, high opera, etc. The boys had to apply lots of colored eye shadows and white face makeup for the different operas, so that was challenging. Fortunately, the girls are always up to helping me with the boys! There were also a few students who had to be aged, so this show had a lot of different types of makeup.”

“I always teach my workshop the week of opening night. The students are always so excited. They make me laugh, and they are always very appreciative of my efforts and time that I spend with them.”

Who is Cynthia RoseAlumnae mom and queen of cosmetics

Cynthia’s advice (or rather, a bit of trivia!): Did you know the fundamental

purpose of stage makeup is to

correct the effects of distance and light? Otherwise an actor’s face

would completely disappear!

The theme may change from year to year – “A Night at the Races,” “Home for the Holidays” and “Celebrate – American Style!” to name a few. But over the course of three decades, one thing that has remained the same is the faithful presence of longtime volunteers Joanne Sholes and Nanci Wilborn. Joanne and her husband attended their first Presentation Auction 25 years ago when their daughter Marianne was a freshman. Joanne offered to help “gift-gather,” and she never looked back – since then she has held an extremely important and labor intensive job, gift certificate chairman. This includes overseeing and coordinating all of the details for hundreds of gift certificates donated to auction each year. Nanci began working on the Pres auction in 1982 when her daughter Wendi was a freshman, which means an incredible milestone coming up this fall, her 30th Presentation auction. Nanci was in charge of silent auction for over 20 years, and in 2006 she co-chaired the event. What an amazing legacy of generosity, and we thank these women for sharing with Presentation the most precious of elements, their time.

“I’ve been involved and attended all Pres auctions since 1987. I grew to enjoy the friendships and the cause, and I enjoy the challenge of raising money to support Presentation. It is so nice to see such a large number of alum parents returning each year to help with the auction. We want to be sure new parents become connected to the auction activities and feel welcomed as we benefit from their ideas and previous experiences.” – Joanne Sholes

“My activity for the auction in recent years has been mainly clerical. When gift certificates come in I make sure they are ready to give out to the successful bidder, matching the envelope number to the catalogue number. It’s not unusual for us to have over 200 gift certificates, and people like to leave the auction with the items they purchase! I have to chuckle at the year a teacher was the highest bidder on a pair of Happy Hollow tickets only to find two pro football tickets in her envelope. Imagine

the surprise of the Pres dad who opened his envelope to find tickets to the zoo! Both were very understanding, but it was a bit embarrassing!” – Joanne Sholes “Another auction anecdote would have to be the 1989 auction. I arrived early for an auction meeting on October 17, which happened to coincide with the Loma Prieta Earthquake. There were just

a few of us on the campus when the earthquake hit, and I recall diving under a desk with Donna Delaney. After the shaking stopped and we made sure everyone was OK, our thoughts turned to the auction meeting scheduled for the evening – and, in particular, the condition of the very expensive bottle of wine we had just received as a donation! Needless to say the auction meeting did not take place, but at least our bottle of wine was intact!” – Joanne Sholes “Two auctions stand out in my mind. One is 1996 ‘A Night at the Races.’ It was so festive. Everything was pink, and people purchased ‘horses.’ There was a winner’s circle for the ‘final race’ and the excitement was over the top. The other auction that was special was 1998’s ‘A Trick or Treat Extravaganza.’ Many of the guests came in costume, so it was really fun and crazy.” – Nanci Wilborn

Grande dames of the Presentation Auction

Nanci’s advice: “I think the key to auction is to have the entire committee be

part of everything that is going on.

We always voted on what we liked and majority ruled. And every meeting

was fun and special. Everyone felt welcomed and

needed.”

Paintbrushes and powertools. Glue guns and glitter. In the weeks preceding major fundraising events at Presentation, it’s not uncommon to spot a whirlwind of such objects in a corner of the the Marian Stuckey Center, bringing our themes to life thanks to the steady hand and artistic genius of Teresa McCarthy. Teresa has volunteered at Presentation since her daughter Shannon was a freshman in 2005, serving four years on Fashion Show committee and three on Parent Board. In 2008 she was named Volunteer of the Year, and she has created designs and décor for Junior Ring Ceremony, Crab and Pasta Feed, Auction, Fashion Show and Senior Dinner. She has also spent volunteer hours on bartending, cooking and cleanup – she truly does it all, and we are so grateful for the creativity, grace and humor she brings to our community.

“I’m a self-taught artist and professionally trained. From an early age I always could be found drawing or working with my dad in the garage building things. I attended West Valley College to study architecture and interior design and then transferred to San Jose State for construction management. I worked for architects and construction firms here in the valley for 10 years before starting a family.” “My first project for the Crab Feed was ‘New Orleans.’ I painted a New Orleans Hotel on cardboard for the foyer. I had never worked with cardboard before. The next year the theme was ‘And the Beat Goes On,’ where we built a stage with go-go cages made of PVC piping with student dancers and psychedelic lighting. My favorite project was ‘under the Big Top,’ when we built a large red and white circus tent in the foyer of the gym. It was complete with clowns, trapeze artist, dancing dog and seal. The next year we built an Italian villa, and last year we built a Western town for the ‘Wild, Wild West’ event.”

“My favorite event was the Fashion Show ‘A Walk on the Styled Side’ at the Fairmont Hotel in 2009, the year my daughter graduated. The committee had given us a budget of $700 to decorate the large foyer space. The décor committee began planning in September and by Christmas we had our design. We built a large foyer sculpture, which I built at home over many hours. The sculpture was made of construction foam that I cut and glued together to make cubes and plates. We painted it with bright colors and they were assembled on a pedestal in the middle of the foyer. We stylized beautiful

paper girls, which were placed on stages all around the foyer. We used rice paper lamps decorated with coffee filters, and placed them on gray pedestals down the hallways.” “The main goal of all Pres events is to raise money for the school and students. We raise the money by creating a beautiful event while keeping our budget low, recycling and borrowing materials whenever possible. We start our design process by sketching floor plans and images that we use to trace on cardboard. We then paint and glitter these cut-outs and build lightweight wood frames to support them. On the Western Town last January, I worked 15 hours a week

with other volunteers tracing, painting, cutting, glittering and building frames, until the event in February. Volunteers are the most important part of making Pres events successful, and without this team of committed people none of these events would be possible.” “My friends ask me ‘Why do you keep on helping?’ and my response has always been because I love working with all the volunteers and students. I enjoy teaching people how to do something they never thought they could do and watching how proud they feel about themselves when they are finished. I will always have many fond memories of working with my daughter, friends and the Pres community to contribute to the mission of Presentation.”

A memorial gift to Presentation can help perpetuate the values that guided a loved one’s life. Gifts may also honor a person during his or her lifetime, or commemorate a significant event. Your thoughtful gift becomes a living memorial that touches the lives of our students.

Presentation High School event planner Jane Jeziorski fondly recalls the first time she noticed Teri Chow. It was in 2001 at a special auction committee meeting for frosh parents. No matter what Jane asked for help with, Teri’s hand shot into the air. Over and over again. “This woman could do everything,” Jane said. “Everything! The cute part is I had a regular auction committee meeting right after that, and I told the old-timers, ‘You’ll never believe who came to this last meeting.’ After I told them about her, for years the big joke was ‘We want to be Teri!’” While the talent Teri has brought to Pres has mostly surrounded her sewing machine – in the form of hundreds of costumes she has created for students working at the event – she’s also a computer whiz. For the raffle at the “Grand Tour” auction in 2003, Teri whipped up 150 unique baggage claim “tickets,” each from a different airport. For many years she also crafted the Presentation Pillow, a popular annual auction item, and she has contributed several class quilts. For her attention to detail, her can-do-it attitude and her many years of faithful service, we salute this sensational seamstress.

“I learned to sew from my mom, Alma Gates, when I was 7 years old, and by 4th grade I was wearing clothes I sewed to school. After taking a home economics course in sewing in 1976,

I submitted a red, white, and blue quilt into a Bicentennial quilt contest and won 2nd place. As a young person establishing my homes, sewing was extremely useful in decorating … drapes, duvet covers, pillows. Even now I like to use the sewing machine to decorate my daughters’ rooms. I find it frustrating that Home Ec is no longer taught in the schools. How else will students be introduced to such a creative and useful skill?”

“Volunteering runs in the family. My mother has been busy in her retirement sewing quilts for veterans, pillows for Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Camp for kids, and care packages in knapsacks for seniors. My husband Ken also volunteered as an Ambassador for Santa Clara university, a member of the Advisory Board for the School of Business, and served as treasurer of the Almaden Valley Girls Softball League in addition to coaching softball for a number of years.”

“A favorite auction was 2001’s ‘Lights, Camera, Auction!’ when Jane Jeziorski asked me and another volunteer to produce gold lamé cummerbunds and bow ties. We sewed over three dozen ensembles for students to wear while working the auction. Another year, I helped replenish the cute red, plaid aprons the students wear while serving the Circle Dinner each year.”

“After learning to love sewing and many other crafts from my mother and grandmother, I am so proud that my daughters have also decided to learn how to sew. Each summer they enjoy attending a sewing camp and take pride in making birthday gifts for their friends. The example I try to set for my family is that it is always possible to help others in our spare time. I would rather create a quilt or costume for the school than watch TV.”

Who is Teri ChowAlumnae parent with a knack for needle and thread

Teri’s advice: “If you are in the market to buy a sewing machine, buy one that threads the needle for you. It has gotten harder to see the small hole as I’ve gotten older!”

Volunteers of the YearThree members of the Presentation High School community were honored as our Volunteers of the Year at the 2011 Circle Dinner in December: Diane and Carlos Azevedo and Carla Sendig.

Diane and Carlos, whose daughters are Alisha ’10 and Natasha ’12, have devoted thousands of volunteer hours to Presentation. Carlos served on the Golf Tournament Committee for five years and chaired the event in 2010. He also chaired the Mother-Daughter Breakfast and Crab and Pasta Feed during his three years on Parent Board. Diane was on the Auction Committee for four years and was a member of the Fashion Show Committee. During her three years on Parent Board she chaired the Incoming Frosh Barbecue and the Senior Dinner. And her continuous support and work with the Speech and Debate team led Coach Tim Case to call her one of the most valuable volunteers in the history of the club.

Carla Sendig, mother of Sarah ’09 and Deanna ’12, has worked on the Auction Committee for six years, during which she generously donated hundreds of gifts to the event, and she has helped with many performing arts projects. She served on Parent Board for two years, serving as an officer on the executive board and twice chairing the Crab and Pasta Feed and Senior Dinner.

Presentation is so grateful for these important members of our community and their amazing work ethic, positive attitudes and generosity of spirit and time.

When Pres girls start pushing away

mentors because they know they

can handle things themselves, that’s

exactly what we are trying to achieve.

I would like parents to know that there are many opportunities to volunteer at Pres that don’t

require a lot of your time. will make new friends and will feel more

connected to the school. There is something for everyone!YOU

We believe Pres did a tremendous job,

academically and socially with our girls.

THANKTo be able to give of yourself – and for someone to be grateful for whatever you can contribute – is a gift in itself! I am reminded of this every time I

volunteer at the school. Someone is always saying you!

They make me laugh, and they are always very appreciative of my efforts and time that I spend with them.

I will always have

many fond memories

of working with my

daughter, friends and

the Pres community.
