DiBella, Peter Date of Death: April 10, 1963

On April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher, the lead ship of a new class of nuclear-powered attack submarines, was conducting sea trials off the coast of New England with another ship, the USS Skylark (ASR-20). The two ships were in communication by means of underwater sound telephone. At 0747 the USS Thresher started a deep dive. Everything was fine until 0913.

At this time the USS Thresher sent this message. "We are experiencing minor difficulties, we have a positive up angle, and are attempting to blow. Will keep you

informed".

At 0916 & 0917 respectively, the USS Skylark received two garbled messages followed shortly by SONAR detection of a high energy, low frequency disturbance. This disturbance was the crushing of the USS Thresher as it had fallen below crush depth. One hundred twenty nine men had perished, including crew members, PNSY Officer Observers, PNSY civilian workers and contractor technicians.

USS Thresher

After 45 years, memory of Thresher crew is still strong 45 years after tragedy, sub 'family' reunites --- by Amy Kane, April 13, 2008

For the 45th year, submariners, veterans and families gathered Saturday to remember one of the greatest tragedies their tight-knit community has ever experienced. On April 10, 1963, a Portsmouth-based nuclear attack submarine, the USS Thresher, sank below crushing depth in sea trials off the coast of Cape Cod and all 129 men on board were lost.

A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. at Traip Academy in Kittery, hosted by the Thresher Base Submarine Veterans. The ceremony opened in the auditorium with keynote speakers and a tolling of the bells as each man's name was read aloud. It included a wreath laying on the banks of the Piscataqua River.

Elizabeth DiBella grew up in Portsmouth and was 11 years old when she lost her big brother, Peter DiBella, a 1961 graduate of Portsmouth High School and a seaman aboard the Thresher. She traveled from her home in Los Angeles to attend the memorial.

Peter DiBella wrote letters to his family when he was away in training. He was excited at the possibility he might serve aboard a submarine based in his hometown that was considered one of the best of its day.

"It was his first assignment and a young man's dream," said DiBella. "He was 19."

15

DiBella said her mother got the news about the sinking of the Thresher while watching television. Her father was away on a trip and traveled home as quickly as possible.

"I remember I was standing on the stairs when he came in," said DiBella. "My mother was on the sofa. He went straight to her and they just held each other."

DiBella's father died in 1981 and her mother in 2001; they attended all the Thresher memorials while they were alive.

The Thresher was the Navy's best sub of the day, and the nation was counting on it to take up its station in the underwater front of the Cold War, said keynote speaker Rear Admiral Kevin McCoy, a former commander of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard now serving at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington, D.C.

"We pushed technology to the limit. Tragically that day The Silent Service went especially silent. It ripped the sub force and the nation as a whole," said McCoy.

A Court of Inquiry eventually determined the Thresher probably sank due to a piping failure, subsequent loss of power and inability to blow ballast tanks rapidly enough to avoid sinking.

McCoy said program improvements led to the Navy's SUBSAFE program.

"We were able to prevent a similar tragedy for 45 years," he said.

Lori Arsenault is a classical guitarist and administrator at the School of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology at the University of Southern Maine. She was the third of five children of crewmember Tilmon Arsenault. She spoke on behalf of the families who had lost loved ones. She said her father instilled a love of music and tinkering in her, teaching her to play the organ and accordion, splice film and operate a HAM radio by the time she was 8 years old.

"The good news is that the size of the hole in our hearts when we lose someone is directly proportionate to our capacity to love," she said.

Arsenault said she and other members of "the Thresher family" come back year after year for several reasons. Families have no cemetery to visit other than the Atlantic Ocean, she said.

"Some come for patriotism and duty, but mostly we come because they made a difference and we understand it's important to remember that," said Arsenault.

Outside, as observers waited for the memorial wreath to float past on the river, Keith Johnson of Philadelphia stood in sunshine with his wife, Rosemary, and the others.

By a twist of fate, five men with the last name of Johnson were on board the Thresher the day it was lost. Keith Johnson might have made six except that he got out of the Navy six weeks before the accident, at the age of 21, after four years of service. He knew 119 of the 129 men who died.

"We lived in a tiny space. We got to know each other very well," he said. "They were like brothers to me." This was the third time he had attended a Thresher memorial.

"It took me till the 30th anniversary before I could come to terms with it," he said. "It's still hard."

Born in Portsmouth, N.H., on Feb. 24, 1943, she was a daughter of Lawrence and Mary (Brown) Lane and attended local schools. She graduated from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1961.

She lived for a time in New Castle before settling in Kittery in 1979. She married her husband, Carl Shaw, on her birthday in1979.

She began her 33-year career working at the Portsmouth Herald in 1973 when it moved into its new building on Maplewood Avenue. She was looking forward to moving into the Herald’s new complex at the Pease International Tradeport.

Anyone who knew her appreciated her sense of style. She always made sure her clothes, shoes and appearance reflected her professional and caring demeanor. She enjoyed clothes shopping and hunting for bargains on HSN and QVC.

Pat enjoyed her time cooking and watching cooking shows on television. She especially enjoyed cooking holiday meals for family and friends and enjoying their company. An avid sports fan, she enjoyed figure skating, baseball and gymnastics as well as watching her beloved grandchildren play

sports as they grew up.

Pat also enjoyed reading mysteries, spending time with her family on the ocean, enjoying a ride on the bow of the boat, sunning and taking in the ocean spray. HERALD REMEMBERS 33-YEAR EMPLOYEE PAT SHAW Editor’s note: Longtime Herald employee Pat Shaw died June 8. At her memorial service on Wednesday, former Herald publisher Derek Wood offered the following eulogy...

Pat Shaw was a very special person. She was one of those people who you will always remember. Anyone who has worked in the Herald’s Maplewood Avenue building at any time during the past 33 years will remember Pat Shaw.

I first met Pat late in 1978. I was the new advertising consultant for Thomson Newspapers, and this was my first visit to the Portsmouth Herald. Harold Clark introduced me to Pat and the other members of the “classified front line,” a front line that included someone else who had that same “always remember” quality, Anita Kent. Every time I visited the Herald, Pat was there to welcome me with a smile and handshake. These handshakes turned to hugs after about my third visit.

Pat was on the front line for 33 years — a remarkable feat. It takes a very special person to be able to do that. From the days of hot metal and typewriters to today’s sophisticated proprietary systems, Pat remained right there on the front line. During her 33 years in classified, I believe she learned five different front-end systems upon which she had scheduled hundreds of thousands of classified ads totaling many millions of dollars.

Pat was, as you know, a local girl. She knew hundreds, maybe even thousands of local people. She

35

could tell you something about almost every prominent local business person, politician, or longtime citizen. She was for 33 years one of the first faces you saw when entering the Herald building. Pat must have shaken the hand of every congressional, Senate and presidential candidate that has visited the Seacoast since Richard Nixon was president. Pat greeted them all the same with a broad smile and wishes of good luck, even though she knew there were some that she wouldn’t have voted for in a million years!

Besides visits to the office by her children and grandchildren, Pat’s most welcome visitors were her four-legged friends. She had regular visits from what I called her “canine groupies.” Pat was just as excited at seeing them as they were with seeing her. Pat liked to share her canine friends with everyone in the building. She would always take the dogs around to the other departments knowing their presence would bring a smile and a few moments of stress relief to her co-workers. So now Pat has left us and passed on to her next assignment. Whoever is interviewing her right now is getting a “good-’un,” a definite keeper. And I’m sure they’ll quickly recognize that she’ll be perfect for their front line.

Mattes, Stanley Date of Death: June 18, 1973

E-mail correspondence between PHS-61 class member Judy (MacDonald) Markowski & Stan’s sister Pam Rouleau ...

Hi Judith, I am so sorry about not responding to your question. The only time I get on Facebook is to download pictures of my Grandkids! Yes, I'm Stan's sister. He was in a car accident in Naples, Italy while serving his 3rd tour of duty in Vietnam as a Captain in the Air Force in Intelligence. He was at his bachelor's party. He actually died at a hospital in Germany on June 18, 1973. He was to be married to a nurse and Captain in the AF -Beora Snow -just 3 weeks later. I'm not sure how much more I can tell you other than we miss him very much. I've actually wondered about a few of his friends Wade Southwick and Shirley Littlefield. Maybe you know something about them. I tried to get in touch with Wade right after it happened, but had no luck locating him. Thanks for getting in touch. It's nice to hear from someone that knew him. If you need anything else, you can email me directly at [email protected]. Pam Rouleau

Pam, Wow it was a surprise to get your message after so long. Thank you for getting back to me. I am saddened to hear the full story of Stanley's passing. How sad. I'm sure he loved what he did in the Air Force. I was off to college after graduation and he said that he would get to that later. Sheila Loughlin, Stanley and I (Judy Mac Donald then) sat near each other in home room (done alphabetically) for a few years. We had lots of laughs together. I did not know him out of school but considered him a good friend and was shocked when I first heard about his death. That is such a hard thing to have happened to your family. It is good to know that he was a Captain and found some one to marry. He wrote one of the nicest comments in my year book and said at the end: Remember Me ... and I always have and will. Judy Markowski

Judy, He did go on to college and graduated with a BA in Psychology from UNH. He took ROTC in college and went into the AF as an officer as soon as he graduated in Aug,1966. Thank you for sending me the picture of the yearbook entry. Even after all these years, I cry as I write this. Take care. Pam

PORTSMOUTH — Raymond Joseph McEachern, 67, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, with his family surrounding him, at the Clipper Harbor of Portsmouth Care and Rehabilitation Center, after a prolonged battle with kidney disease.

He was born Dec. 30, 1943, and raised in the Creek Hill section of Portsmouth as the fifth of eight children of Archie D. and Ann T. (Regan) McEachern. Ray graduated from St. Patrick's School in 1957 and from Portsmouth High School in 1961, where he was junior

class president. He also attended New Hampshire Boys State, and played on four Portsmouth High School state golf championship teams.

He is survived by brothers Paul of Portsmouth, John of Hampton, Duncan of Kittery, Maine, and William of Phoenix, Ariz.; sisters Mary Keenan of Rye, Katherine D'Amours of Manchester, and Margaret McEachern of Rye; 18 nieces and nephews; several cousins; and many friends.

WE REMEMBER: He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1965. While there, he was business manager for the student newspaper and was elected to the New Hampshire General Court from Ward 1, serving as one of the youngest state legislators at the time; he was listed in Who's Who in American Politics. Throughout his life, Ray maintained an abiding interest in politics at all levels.

At UNH, Ray took journalism classes from Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Murray, who became his lifelong mentor. After UNH, he joined the staff of the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass., where he worked as a reporter and columnist for nearly 35 years until his retirement several years ago, when he returned to Portsmouth. At the Patriot Ledger, Ray covered city affairs and for years wrote a weekly column known as Quincy Common dealing with local politics and human interest. He also served for several years as a panelist on Quincy Community TV "Newsmakers" show, for which he won an award in 1984. That same year, the Quincy Bureau News honored him as Media Person of the Year. And in 1989, he was one of three reporters to share the Inland Press-University of Wisconsin First Prize in Local Government Reporting.

Ray loved his work. He wrote with clarity and conviction and always with a sensitivity for the people behind his stories. His forte was writing about those who faced and overcame personal challenges in their lives. He also enjoyed mentoring young reporters. In Quincy, he lived on the Houghs Neck peninsula, an oceanside community, where he put down deep roots. He felt honored to share stories about peninsula life and times with thousands of South Shore readers. He described Houghs Neck as "Quincy's down to earth place, right next to heaven."

His interests and hobbies included local history, writing, photography, and deep-sea fishing. He was a member of the Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and the Communication Workers of America, Local 31247.

Ray was a sincere and humble person who will be missed by his family, friends and colleagues.

LONGTIME PATRIOT-LEDGER REPORTER RAY McEACHERN EARNED THE RESPECT OF MANY

Only last week, Ray McEachern was talking to family and friends during an outing in Rye, N.H., about returning to Quincy for some fishing in Houghs Neck.

McEachern, a New Hampshire native whose career as a reporter for The Patriot Ledger began in 1969, knew he was very ill and would never be able to make the trip to his former adopted hometown.

It was just McEachern being his old self – positive and upbeat.

44

After battling kidney disease that led to a transplant several years ago, McEachern, known as Uncle Ray by many of his Ledger colleagues, died Sunday in New Hampshire. He was 67.

“With Ray’s passing, it’s the end of an era,” U.S. Rep. William Delahunt, D-Quincy, said Monday. “He represented the best in journalism. I know I will miss him. He understood this community. People trusted him. He was a man of quiet dignity.”

McEachern, who retired in 2004, touched the lives of those he wrote about over the years.

Former Quincy Mayor James Sheets said McEachern, a University of New Hampshire graduate, was always full of ideas and willing to offer a suggestion. All you had to do was ask.

“We wanted to have a cleanup day in May but didn’t know what to call it,” Sheets said. “Ray started throwing out a whole bunch of ideas. He suggested a ‘Cleaner Greener Quincy.’ That’s what it became.”

McEachern’s career at the Ledger followed a stint in the New Hampshire state Legislature. Most of it was spent covering Quincy City Hall as a reporter and columnist. He would jokingly refer to his home as the paper’s Houghs Neck bureau.

“He was someone you felt comfortable with and knew you could talk to,” Sheets recalled. “He had a good wit and a soft-spoken manner. My life is richer because I knew Ray McEachern.”

Two other former Quincy mayors, Arthur Tobin and Francis McCauley, also had fond memories of McEachern. It was his fairness in reporting the news that they appreciated.

“Ray was a decent individual and a wonderful reporter,” said Tobin, now the clerk-magistrate at Quincy District Court. “He was always professional. He had a knack of making friends with those he dealt with. I enjoyed my conversations with him. He was very well-liked.”

McCauley, who also served on the city council and school committee in Quincy, said McEachern never sensationalized a story. He wanted to get it right.

Pesola, Calvin Date of Death: August 1, 2015

Memo from PHS-61 class member Gary Sullivan RE: Calvin Pesola, 27 Cedergren Rd, New Durham, NH 03855 …

I went up to see Cal on Friday, August 12, 2016. I found the cottage he owned on Merrymeeting Lake in New Durham, NH. Cal wasn’t home so I wrote a note and told him I waited for an hour. I put my phone number on the note. The next night, I got a call from Cal’s cousin Greg. He told me that Cal had passed away on August 1, 2015 in a motel in Wisconsin.

Cal’s cousin was getting married on August 2nd in Wisconsin and Cal was on his way to the wedding. Cal had stopped in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to visit his relatives. All the Finn’s live in the UP. Cal’s mother (Sandy) and his dad (Walt) came from Finland. I guess when Cal didn’t get to the wedding his relatives called the Wisconsin State Police who found a car with NH plates. They found Cal dead in his bed from cardiomyopathy. Cal’s cousin is here to straighten out his estate.

The people at Kingswood Golf course had a Memorial Service for Cal sometime in September, 2015. The golf course is south of Alton Bay. Greg said, “one hundred people attended the Memorial Service.”

Greg’s # is (262)-391-9857
