There is virtually and endless list of places to visit when in Phuket. Some are manmade while others are works of art created by Mother Nature. Today, the sky shone brightly as though beckoning us to get ready for an island visit.

So, my friends and I dutifully met up at the Love Andaman Tour by Thaplamu Pier where we were joined

by handsome celebrities like Pai, Pong and AA for a trip to visit the vast, amazing realm of the Similan.

After everyone was ready, Mr. Satang of Love Andaman Tour led us aboard the waiting speedboat destined for the vast open sea. Everyone had a big smile on their face as they knew perfectly well that the Andaman is one of the most breath-taking destinations in all of Thailand. It was going to be an amazing trip.

We started-off the day with a very good deed. With permission from the national park’s administrative office, we were allowed to make a stop on Island One to free young turtles into the sea. Normally, Island One is off-limits to tourists as it is a protected area for turtles to breed and lay eggs.

As expected, this island was pure as can be. The sand was powdery soft and nature unspoiled the way Mother Nature intended.

Eจากนนเรากมาเกาะเมยงหรอเกาะส เพยงแรกเหนหวใจกแทบจะละลาย แนใจหรอคะวาเปนเกาะ เพราะสวยเสยจนนกวาสวรรคอยขางหนา เพยงแคมองไปยงหาดทรายททอแสงระยบระยบเหมอนแสงเฟสช ทำาใหพวกเราคดวาจะถายรปมมไหนเอาไวอวดเพอนๆ ด เพราะสวยเกไปทกมมมอง

After our noble activity, we headed off to Koh Miang, otherwise known as Island Four. We fell in love at first sight as what lay ahead was not an island, but a vision of paradise. The glittering sand reflected sunlight like crystals as we each vied for a spot to take photographs.

In the afternoon, the boys put on their snorkeling gears and dove into the clear, inviting water to say hello to the fishes and corals. The girls were happy to splash around in the shallow water, perfectly content to be in this wonderful environment.

ตองขอบอกกอนนะคะวาเกาะส มชายหาดอยทงสองฝง สามารถเดนไปมาหากนไดประมาณ 500 เมตร ทางเดนตองผานปา ซงเปนทอยอาศยของปไก ทงสองหาดตางกมชายหาดทสวยงาม ชวนสมผส มทพก และทกางเตนทดวยคะ

One of the cool aspects of Island Four is its two beaches located on opposite sides, both connected by 500 meters of jungle that is home to the hairy leg mountain crabs. Both beaches are gorgeous and offer overnight accommodation and tent area.

Eพกผอนไดสกพก เรากออกเดนทางไปชนชมปะการงกนทบรเวณเกาะแปด ซงมเอกลกษณโดดเดนคอมหนแกรนตขนาดใหญรปทรงแปลกตาหลากหลาย แตทโดดเดนเปนเอกลกษณกคอหนรปเรอใบตงตระหงาน มองแลวทงกบธรรมชาตทชางสรางสรรคความงดงามบนโลกใบนอยแหงน

After a little rest, we were off again to see more corals around Island Eight. There were large granite boulders in different shapes, with the most outstanding being the one that looks like a sail boat. It’s amazing how nature could create so much beauty for this world.


และแลวกถงเวลาของการดำานำา และเรยนรธรรมชาตใตทองทะเล ทมทงเหลาฝงปลาหลากหลายสายพนธ และปะการงหลากหลายชนด หากโชคดหนอยอาจจะไดทกทายกบเจาเตานอยจาวสมทรของเกาะสมลน

Finally, it was time for scuba diving. This activity offer visitors a chance to learn about life under the sea, the habitat of fishes and crustaceans of different species and even the turtles that roam the Similan.

Our first stop was at Lamson Beach where one can see Yao Noi Island just straight ahead. The atmosphere here is nice and peaceful with coconut trees providing shaded areas on the sand.

Departing from Bangrong Pier, the boat journey took about half an hour before reaching Klong Hia Pier. Our chauffer, Bang Loh, and guide, Bang Yope, came to meet us there and enthusiastically brought us to Koh Yao Yai Village Hotel. We freshened up a bit and were ready for a grand expedition of the island.

นอกจากหาดนเปนสถานทพกผอนของชาวบานและนกทองเทยวแลว บงโยปเลาใหฟงวา ถาชวงเยนๆ นำาลดชาวบานจะมาเกบหอยชกตนนำาไปขายเปนอาชพเสรม ทนบรรยากาศดมาก มความเปนสวนตวเหมาะจะมาปคนคทงนงและนอนรบลมทะเลเยนอรา

Apart from being a restful spot for holiday goers, Bang Yope told us that many villagers come here in the evenings to gather Wing Shells to sell in the market. The atmosphere is so private and relaxing, great for enjoying a picnic or just lying down and breathing in the fresh, cool breeze.

ลอหมนอกครงเมอบงทงสองบอกวาจะพาเราไปเยยมชมหมบานชาวประมง ระหวางทางเราเหนชาวบานทกทายพดคยและถามไถกนตลอดทาง ไมวารถขยบไปทางไหนชาวบานกสงเสยง ทกทาย ดอบอนดคะ

After a while, we hopped back onto the Poh Thong and headed for the fishing village. On the way, we could see villagers stopping to chitchat with each other, some calling out to us with genuinefriendliness.

Bang Loh also told us that the villagers here consider their neighbors as family. Everyone knows and care about each other which is very charming, unlike people living in the big cities.

We sat down and relaxed around the fishing pier listening to Bang Yope telling stories about the places and people of Koh Yao Yai. I was slightly envious of their wholesome existence so close to nature; no wonder they are such happy, worry-free people.

Lets pay a visit to the Phuket Philatelic Museum, a white single-storey Sino-Portuguese style struc-ture that was built in 1930. Origi-nally, it was the residence of ‘Phra Anurak Yotha’, an officer in the government’s administration. Later, the building was used by several sectors of the government until it finally became Phuket’s first post office.

Another part of the museum offers displays of an-cient communication equipment that are now obso-lete. Most existed in the era when telegrams were still in use, and these include things like the first vintage scales for weighing parcels, telegram sending devices and more. There is also a library and small corner for writing postcards to friends.

The museum is truly a great place for learning about stamps from around the world, especially ones from Thailand. Some of the rare pieces are even valued at thousands of dollars in the market. Ajarn Buddhadhasa Bhikku, a truly revered monk who was a native of Surat Thani, founded the first “Suan Mokkhamokephalar-am” in 1932 where he occupied a deserted temple. Ten years later, he moved the retreat from Phummariang District to its present location around Khao Phut Thong in Chaiya District.

Today, we wish to invite our readers on a journey to visit Thailand’s (and the world’s) sanctuary of Dhamma. Known to some as “Wat Tharn Nam Lai”, the retreat is about three hour’s drive from Phuket. It is located along highway number 41 at the 134th kilometer mark.

The ground’s forest is kept in its natural state, with leaves and branches of the trees serving as roof and trunks acting as monastery walls. At “Lan Hin Kong” or lawn of the rocks, the soil serves as floor, occasionally strewn with rocks of different sizes beneath large trees. The atmosphere is absolutely peaceful, tidy and serene which is ideal for carrying out sacred rituals on the Buddhist calendar.

Close to Lan Hin Kong, was the Guti of Buddhadasa Bhikku where he resided while still alive. At the front, we could see stone benches where he used to receive guests and discuss Dhamma with them. Today, this area is used as the sanctuary’s information center. Looking around the vast grounds, visitors will be able to study Buddhist paintings and teachings that are simple yet so deep and profound.

Next, we came to “Sa Naligae”, a one-rai pond with a small islet in the middle. On the islet are coconut trees, which are called Naligaes in southern language. Buddhadasa Bhikku has said that the islet is like Nirvana where one must travel across in order to achieve.

There are more points of interest like the “Sala Dhamma Khosana” where the ashes and works of the great monk are kept. Nearby is a statue of the Boddhisatra Awalogi-taesawara and painting-studio-turned-human-reform-institution that teaches about giving kindness and giving up sinful doings. There is also a “Theatre of the Souls” filled with statues created by monks portraying history of Buddhism.

My friends and I ordered a mix of Thai and western dishes, starting with a light Greek salad followed by deep-fried grouper with spicy sauce. Our recent trip to Yao Yai Island was undeniably a great one. The people were really nice, the food was delicious, the weather was sunny and mild, and the view was just to die for. On top of this, there is the delicious tiny little pancakes by Jah Ree that practically all visitors can’t get enough of and would always bring back as a souvenir for those back home.

For ingredients, you only need glutinous rice flour, grated (young) coconut meat, sugar and salt. To make, first mix the flour with some water then add grated coconut. Next, add sugar, sprinkle a bit of salt then stir until everything is well-mixed to get that perfect taste of Thai kanom.
