PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM
RATIONALE
In our rapidly changing society, there is an increasing community awareness of the importance
of a healthy lifestyle and a growing recognition of the need to encourage people to be more
active, responsible, respectful and disciplined throughout life. Physical Education, as an essential
dimension of education, must also develop the abilities, will power and self-discipline of every
human being as a fully integrated member of society.
The Physical education Curriculum will provide learners with the knowledge, practical skill and
positive attitudes necessary to meet these needs and develop a better of life.
At the individual level, physical education and organized sports contribute to the maintenance
and improvement of health, provide a wholesome leisure-time occupation and enable people to
overcome the drawbacks of modern living. At schools and the community level, they enrich
social relations and develop fair play, which is essential not only to sport itself but also to life in
society.
Our education system assigns the requisite place and importance to physical education and sports
in order to establish a balance and strengthen links between physical activities and other
components of education.
2
AIMS
The aims of the Physical Education Curriculum are:
1. To promote the physical, social emotional and intellectual development of the child.
2. To develop positive personal qualities.
3. To help in the acquisition of an appropriate range of movement skills in a variety of
contents.
4. To promote understanding and knowledge of the various aspects of movement.
5. To promote enjoyment of, and positive attitudes towards physical activity and its
contribution to lifelong health-related fitness, thus preparing the child for the active and
purposeful use of leisure time.
3
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
INTRODUCTION
Physical education directly contributes to the mental and physical well being of the learners. It is
mostly concerned with developing in learners the knowledge, understandings, skills values and
attitudes that will enable them to adopt and live healthy and fulfilling lives.
This learning area contributes to the overall school curriculum is that it is directly concerned
with the development of the whole person and it also assists in the improvement of the quality of
life for all.
Physical Education is an integrated part of the total curriculum when one considers the
importance of activity and various play experiences in the learning process. Physical education
activities make up a large part of the experiences through which learners acquire knowledge.
Textbook writers in mathematics have recognized that children learn through play experiences
that are familiar, fun and real of them, utilize game situations, play activities and physical
education equipment to enhance the presentation of mathematical skills.
Physical activity also provides an effective medium for learning by doing. Movement
experiences should aim to develop not only kin aesthetic awareness and skill, but also self-
awareness aesthetic, appreciation, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
It is also essential that the physical education programmes include participation in regular and
varied physical activity not to ensure optimal structural growth and good functioning of the
body, but also establish the foundation of a lifelong commitment to valuing and leading a healthy
lifestyle.

ASSESSMENT
Assessment is an ongoing process of gathering evidence to make judgments about students‟ needs,
strengths, abilities and achievements. Assessment of students‟ progress is an important part of the
teaching – learning process and forms the basis for further action by both the teacher and student.
It can be used as a diagnostic tool to assist in the planning of programmes, as a formative tool to
improve student performance while conducting a programme, or as a summative process to
determine levels of student achievement.
In physical education, assessment should be used to improve the teaching and learning process.
Information obtained from a variety or assessment procedures can provide feedback to teachers,
parents and students about the level of student achievement, the relevance of work taught to
students, the effectiveness of the teaching methodology and the appropriateness of resources and
time allocation.
Assessment information in physical education can be used in the following ways.
At class level:
As a basis for identifying the individual / group needs of the learners.
To determine the extent to which students have achieved the started learning outcome.
To provide feedback to students so that they may improve their performance.
To improve an indication of the effectiveness of the physical education curriculum.
At school level:
To evaluate teaching programmes.
To provide information to parents about the progress of their children.
To provide an indication of the effectiveness of the physical education curriculum.
As Physical Education is a practical subject much of the assessment, which is done by teachers, is of
a subjective nature. However, it is very important that records of learners‟ achievement be kept for
each sport-related activity.
