On Saturday, October 7, more than 30 UNMC Students of the University of Nebraska − American Physical Therapy Association (SUN-APTA) members volunteered at a GoBabyGo! GoBabyGo! is a national, non-profit initiative started by Cole Galloway, PT, PhD, at the University of Delaware. Galloway and his team “are committed to a single, urgent vision: all people exploring their world via independent mobility!” Research clearly demonstrates that self-initiated mobility changes cognition and social interaction in children as young as six months of age. Since its inception in 2012, GoBabyGo! has grown internationally to include 40+ chapters. In Nebraska, the effort was spearheaded by UNMC alumnus and MMI Physical Therapy director, Sandy Willett, PT, MS, PCS. Willett, partnering with SUN-APTA, Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, UNL’s Biomedical Engineering Student Organization, and UNO’s Peter Kiewit Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (PKI-IEEE), secured initial grant funding in 2016 through the Munroe Meyer Institute’s Guild for start-up. In August, 2017, Assistant Professor Satera Nelson, MS, joined the College of Allied Health Professions (CAHP) faculty in Kearney as an anatomy instructor. Satera earned a master’s degree in Medical Anatomy from UNMC in May, 2017. Ms. Nelson earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“While at UNL, I had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant in the Human Anatomy Lab for 2.5 years. I learned a lot about the human body and about adapting my teaching style to students who learn differently. It was a fun and challenging experience.”

The first section of physical therapy students on the Kearney campus entered in August, 2016. Assistant Professor Ryan Splittgerber, PhD, core faculty member in the Division of Physical Therapy Education and Director of the Health Science Education Complex (HSEC) Gross Anatomy Lab, assisted in the coordination of their anatomy course during the Fall 2016 semester. A planned increase in the number of PT and PA students in the lab, in addition to Dr. Splittgerber’s transition to a new role as Assistant Dean for the HSEC, created a need for an additional faculty member with expertise in anatomy.

“Ms. Nelson has been a tremendous asset to the faculty and students in four CAHP programs in Kearney – participating in anatomy labs, living anatomy sessions, and holding tutoring and review sessions,” said Dr. Splittgerber.

In her free time, Satera enjoys playing with her little cousins, reading, and traveling.

modified ride-on cars (ROC’s) cost between $200 to $250 to complete. Plans to expand the program to Kearney are currently in the works.

Engineering students, physical therapy students and physical therapy clinicians work together at each ‘build’ to modify electrical wiring and adapt seating specific to a child’s needs, a process that takes three to four hours. Children and families arrive for fittings and test drives at the end of the event. The joy is palpable as children explore their new-found independence and mobility! Building on the program’s current success, GoBabyGo! Nebraska! is working with UNL and UNO engineering teams as well as the Kansas City Chapter to broaden car options for older children and to enhance cars with smoother acceleration, improved steering capabilities, and sensors that provide auditory cues about obstacles.
