Dear SPX Parents, Welcome to a new school year! I am excited and thrilled for what lies ahead for the students of Saint Pius X Catholic School. I want all to know that I will do my best to make our school the best it can be. I ask for your patience, understanding and sup-port as we transition. I look forward to getting to know all of you and I have no doubt that together, we all can make great things happen here at SPX! This summer, our school began many updates and renovations. Several class-rooms received new carpet, the primary wing hallway was tiled and both bath-rooms are being completely renovated. Parish Hall also received some upgrades. The Parish Center (gym) stairway, along with the Music room, Art room, and band room all had a “face lift” too. All of these things were done with the help from grants we received last year. As a reminder, please make sure that in the mornings and in the afternoons, you are following the correct route and drive pattern in dropping off and picking up your child (ren). I am asking that if you do park to drop off or pick up your child, you park at the Brown house. Please do not park in the front of the school or even alongside the road. It is a busy time and my concern is the safety of all. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or the office. Also, please check in at the office each time you come to visit. Please wear your Safe Environment badge. If you do not have one, you may contact Ginger Farrell in the church office to sign up for the class. This will allow you to serve as a vol-unteer and visit our entire campus. Otherwise, you will be given a visitor sticker and will be limited to specific areas of our school. Again, this is for the safety of our children and staff members. I thank you in advance for following these safety procedures. Have a wonderful weekend! Putting His Children First, Tana Scott Interim Principal

Looking ahead: August 23-Band Parent Meeting @ 6pm in Parish Hall (if PH is not completed it will be moved to the café) August 25-Mass August 26-Noon dismissal (1/2 day of school)

Ms. Wahlstrom says… Welcome Back SPX Parents! As we start off the school year, I know the kids have been

used to taking their phones with them everywhere so this week’s message focuses on some simple, easy to follow rules about cell phones.

Key guidelines for cell-phone carrying kids: 1. Respect the school's rules. Some schools per mit students to use their phones at cer tain times: between classes, at lunch, on

the playground, even occasionally in class. Abusing this privilege could get your child’s phone taken away and possibly jeopard-ize other classmates' freedom. Remind your child, to only use the phone when allowed to on school grounds.

2. Pick up when it's parents calling. Sometimes mom, dad, or your caregiver need to talk to you. It's probably very important, so don't send it to voicemail. 3. Ask permission before downloading anything. Even if your child has his own app store account, get sign off on any apps that are being downloaded. If something has in-app purchases, those costs could wind up on the parents' bill -- so parents, you need to know what extra charges a download may incur. Parents, also make sure what is downloaded is age appropriate and reasonably good for your child. 4. Don't flaunt it. Owning a cell phone is a pr ivilege that not every kid has access to. It' s OK for your child to be proud of his phone -- it's an expensive piece of equipment for which he’s been given responsibility -- but showing off could make other people feel bad. Also, it could get stolen. 5. Use your phone for good, not evil. You' ll see all kinds of misbehavior and mischief regarding phones in school. Remind your child, to set an example for others by being respectful and responsible with the phone. Have your child ask permission before taking someone's picture. Remind him to take a moment to consider whether a text or video could hurt, annoy, or embarrass someone else. Remind him also to turn off the phone when supposed to. Good rule to remember: Don't let the phone be more important than someone standing right in front of you. And here's an essential rule for parents: Don't text your kid during the school day. Unless it's a real emergency -- like, you're going to the hospital -- resist the urge to text your kid during the school day. Kids have survived for many, many years without talking to their parents while they're at school -- and they need to be allowed independence. And if your kid texts you, make sure he's not breaking any rules to do so.

If you are interested in being a substitute for St. Pius X Catholic School, please contact Mrs. Margaret White for details or have questions — [email protected] Please remember, substitutes must be safe environment cleared.
