{Sustainability}.The quality of not being harmful to the environment

or depleting natural resources

On average adults use 9 personal care products a day. This means on a daily basis a person is likely to be exposed to 126 unique chemical ingredients in personal care

products alone [1]

• Environmental, Social and Economic impact of the personal care industry

• Research shows the most significant footprints in the cosmetic industry lie with the consumer, followed by packaging and ingredients

• The cumulative effects of wasteful habits associated with the personal care industry can significantly contribute to resource depletion and global warming

“The social, economic and environmental pillarsof sustainability all have a place at the heart ofthe life cycle of cosmetic and personal careproducts. The integration of these elements isnot a marketing tool, it represents a genuinecommitment to sustainability… at many levelsof the business model.”

(Bertil Heerink - Cosmetics Europe)

Phyto-Biotics Acai®Plant Stem Cell Technology

Plant stem cell technology facilitates the development of eco-friendly and sustainable cosmetic products. Technological advances allow cosmetic scientists to

select, extract and improve natural molecules.

• The demand for stem cell technologies that promise potent anti-aging benefits has grown exponentially in the last decade

• Cosmetic market has seen many incarnations of stem technology- Plant stem cells- Ingredients to activate endogenous adult stem cells

Phyto-Biotics Acai® What are Stem Cells?

Biological cells found in all multicellular organisms, which can divide, through mitosis, and differentiate into diverse, more specialised cell types.

• Each new cell has the potential to either remain a stem cell or become anothertype of cell with a specific function

• Stem cells serve primarily as an internal repair system

• These cells can divide to replenish other cells or migrate to damaged areas to repair tissue

• Stem cells are defined by their plasticity

Phyto-Biotics Acai® Stem Cell Differentiation

• Cellular Plasticity: A cell’s ability to move from an undifferentiated state to a specific cell type

• Types of Plasticity:Pluripotent: cells can transform from a generic animal or plant cell into many different cell types

Totipotent: cells can transform into any cell type

Phyto-Biotics Acai® What are Stem Cells?

Meristemic Cells

• Pluripotent cells found in plants

• Have the ability to replicate beyond Hayflick’s Limit [2]

• No ethical issues surround the use of plant stem cells (in contrast to embryonic stem cells)

• Currently there are 2 approaches to stem cells:- Stimulation of adult stem cell proliferation- The use of plant stem cells

Phyto-Biotics Acai®A sustainable approach

• Molecules of interest are highly concentrated in meristem cells (buds)

• In culture, all cells are differentiated cells with meristematic character

• Only requires a small amount of plant tissue to find active substance

• Completely eco-friendly, protects biodiversity, no harvesting wild plants or crops

• Full access to natural substances plus a higher presence of key plant molecules

Page 15: PHYTO-BIOTICS ACAI®€¦ · sustainable cosmetic products. Technological advances allow cosmetic scientiststo select, extract and improve natural molecules. • The demand for stem

Phyto-Biotics Acai®A sustainable approach

• Numerous plants can be grown in culture in the presence of bacteria and yeast to enhance the production of secondary metabolites

• Allows for the sustainable production of extracts precisely standardized for specificactives

• The use of secondary metabolites:- Essential for the plant to interact with its environment- Allows for adaptation, defence and ultimately survival in less than

ideal conditions

Phyto-Biotics Acai® Ferulic Acid

• Phytochemical found in plant cell wall components [3]

• Reinforces the plant cell wall, protecting from microbial attack and UV damage

• Acts as a potent antioxidant and ROS scavenger[3]

• Helps to extend other antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E providing greaterphoto-protection and stability[4]

• Ferulic acid is soluble in water at neutral or alkaline pH (pH 7 and above) but then the solution discolors quickly on storage

Phyto-Biotics Acai®Ferulic Acid on the Market

SkinCeuticals (L’Oreal) C E Ferulic® features a synergisticantioxidant combination of 15% pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid),1% vitamin E (alpha tocopherol), and 0.5% ferulic acid to enhanceprotection against environmental damage caused by free radicalsthat can contribute to atmospheric aging. In addition toantioxidant protective benefits, C E Ferulic improves signs of agingand photodamage, the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and theloss of firmness, while brightening the skin's complexion.

Published in 8 peer-reviewed scientific journals, C E Ferulic® is avitamin C serum formulated under the Duke Antioxidant patent. [5]

Comparing photo-protection and stability ofFerulic Acid in combination with vitamin C andvitamin E.

Skin was pretreated with the test vehicle vs0.5% Ferulic Acid vs 15% vitamin C + 1%vitamin E vs 15% vitamin C + 1% vitamin E, +0.5% ferulic acid and irradiated with solar-simulated radiation 2x – 10x minimalerythema dose (MED) at 2x MED intervals.

Lin et al. (2005:827) found a significantdifference of p <0.01 in photo-protection andstability when using 15% Vitamin C + 1%Vitamin E + 0.5% Ferulic Acid.[4]

Figure 1. Sunburn cell measurements (SBC) of photo protection by antioxidant solutions at 2x MEDintervals. Results show an increase in photo-protection and stability with 15% vitamin C + 1% vitamin E+ 0.5% Ferulic Acid

Trolox®, an analogue of Vitamin E, was used asthe positive control

Solutions were prepared at two concentrations,as a reference

Florescent measurements were taken every 2minutes for 2 hours

Demonstrates that Phyto-Biotics Acai® canprovide antioxidant properties compared to thecontrol. The antioxidant capacity increased asthe concentration of the active increased. As aresult we can assure that its ability to minimiseoxidative stress is also dose dependent

Human dermal fibroblasts were seeded into 12-well tissue culture plates

Phyto-Biotics Acai® was added to completeDMEM containing 1μg/mL LPS and incubatedwith fibroblasts for 24 hours

Demonstrates that Phyto-Biotics Acai ® canexhibit anti-inflammatory effects on LPS-treatedfibroblasts. This decrease in IL-6 productionindicates a reduced inflammatory environmentwhich could decrease the signs of UV inducedaging and reduce the formation of fine lines, wrinkles and skin damage

Ten volunteers (M/F) between the ages of 23 and45, were asked to apply an O/W emulsioncontaining 2.0% Phyto-Biotics Acai® to their volarforearms twice a day for four weeks. Measurementswere taken using the DermaLab Combo. For addedperspective, measurements of an untreated testsite and a site treated with the O/W emulsion withno additives were also recorded.

Results indicated that after 24 hours, the solutioncontaining 2.0% Phyto-Biotics Acai® moisturizedthe skin 12.08% more effectively than the baselotion alone, while enhancing hydration levels27.25% better than the base lotion alone after fourweeks of application.
