THE PURPOSE OF PI ALPHA XI, THE HONOR SOCIETY FOR HORTICULTURE, IS TO RECOGNIZE HIGH SCHOLARSHIP, TO FOSTER

GOOD RELATIONSHIPS AMONG ITS MEMBERS, TO PROMOTE OR TO FACILITATE THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AMONG MEMBERS OF

THE PROFESSIONS, AND TO ESTABLISH CORDIAL RELATIONS AMONG STUDENTS, EDUCATORS AND INDUSTRY MEMBERS.

Dear Friends of the Lotus, What a great floral design and judging competition we had in Stillwater this past March! Doug Needham and the Oklahoma State University staff and students were the perfect hosts –not a single item was left to chance. From country line dancing to the state-of-the-art floral demonstration at Teleflora, from the somber visit at the Memorial to the Victims of the Oklahoma City Bombing to the festive opening night mixer, from the coaches’ staging of the classes, to the student judging and finally the Awards Ceremony - everything went smoothly. I encourage all Pi Alpha Xi chapters think about fielding a judging team and if that is too much – then just a foursome for the floral design competition. You will find rewards for you and your students beyond the obvious. At the Coaches meeting, a very serious topic was raised – the future of Pi Alpha Xi National. As faculty retire and more obligations are imposed on current faculty, filling the positions of the national office are getting harder and harder. The secretary-treasurer commitment is very time consuming particularly during the Spring semester. As a result two things are in the works – first I will be meeting with the Administrator’s Working Group at ASHS to promote reactivation and increase Pi Alpha Xi chapters. Secondly, we have started the process of looking for a permanent home of Pi Alpha Xi national. The purpose of the permanent home would be to ensure the website was updated, the bank account verified, the flower judging manual available and a stable place to request and receive pins and certificates. I have already had e-discussions with Mike Neff at ASHS. ASHS already does something similar for the Florida State Horticultural Society and are

interested in working with us. The challenge of course will be the cost as we are a very low budget operation. Virginia Walter is also researching the possibility of an independent Executive Secretary. There are also other organizations that we may consider approaching once we have determined what would be the responsibilities of this individual and how much we can pay! We will continue this very serious discussion at our annual meeting in Scottsdale this July. Please think about this and contact any of the officers with your suggestions and comments. I hope that summer brings you a time to refresh and rejuvenate. Don’t’ forget our annual photography contest. See you in Scottsdale. As ever,

Ellen

By Trisha Gedon Communications Specialist Agricultural Communications Services Oklahoma State University STILLWATER, Okla. – Students from eight universities across the country demonstrated their judging and design skills as they took part in the recent 66th Annual National Intercollegiate Floral Crop Quality Evaluation and Design Competition.

Oklahoma State University (OSU) hosted the event which is sponsored by Pi Alpha Xi, the National Honor Society for Horticulture, and the American Floral Endowment, the only industry wide organization completely dedicated to funding research and educational programs for floriculture and environmental horticulture.

Participating schools included OSU, California Polytechnic State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, The Pennsylvania State University, New Mexico State University, South Dakota State University, University of Wisconsin – Platteville and University of Wisconsin – River Falls.

“The purpose of this competition is to provide students with a

venue in which they can demonstrate their ability to identify quality of potted plants and cut flowers, as well as to learn more about production and utilization,” said Doug Needham, OSU floriculture professor. “When the students judge in the various categories they need to look at symmetry, proportion, uniformity and floriferousness, as well as several other criteria such as proper facing, spacing and progression of the floral display. The competition definitely challenges the students’ higher order thinking skills of analysis and evaluation.”

Competing in contests such as this one, Needham said students hone their skills of assessment in order to make wiser choices of plants to use in landscapes, interiorscapes and floral designs.

Awards for team and individual judging were presented at the awards banquet. California Polytechnic State University took first place in the team competition. The University of Wisconsin – River Falls, placed second and OSU placed third.

Students receiving awards for judging at the banquet included Hilary Hirzel, Cal Poly, first place overall judge and first place judge of cut flowers; Cassie Rogers, OSU, second place judge overall, and tied for first place judge of potted plants; Bridget Zurcher, UW – Platteville, third place judge overall, and tied for first place judge of potted plants; Ryan Bolduan, Cal Poly, second place judge of cut flowers; Melissa Penovich, UIUC, third place judge of cut flowers; Danielle Huper, UW – River Falls, second place judge of potted plants; and Brandon Lowry, UW – River Falls, third place judge of potted plants.

The floral design competition included both professional and non-professional divisions, and the

designs were judged by Mary Baker, House of Flowers, Stillwater; Jim Burtschi, Colonial Florist, Stillwater; and Dan Long, AIFD, Uptown Florist, Enid. In the non-professional division, students receiving awards for their round centerpieces included Kelsi Cureton, NMSU, first place; Karlee Curatola, Penn State, second place; and Lena Ruesch, UW – River Falls, third place; and students receiving awards for their asymmetrical triangle arrangements included Megan Hilt, OSU, first place; Bridget Zurcher, UW – Platteville, second place; and Melissa Penovich, UIUC, third place. In the professional division, students receiving awards for their bridal bouquets included Michaela Molter, UW – River Falls, first place; Krystle Peelen, SDSU, second place; and Ellen Weatherholt, OSU, third place; and students receiving awards for their double-tiered wedding table centerpiece included Joshua Morris, OSU, first place; Sara Barnhart, UIUC, second place; and Megan Chilson, SDSU, third place.

In addition to the competition itself, students also had the opportunity to make industry contacts and learn more about internships and career opportunities. Participants took part in several tours, including Bear Creek Farms, a specialty cut flower farm in Stillwater owned and operated by Vicki Stamback; the OSU Botanical Garden; The Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory in Oklahoma City; the Teleflora Education Center in Oklahoma City; and the Oklahoma City National Bombing Memorial.

“The tour of the Crystal Bridge presented a unique opportunity, as much of the interior is currently

under reconstruction,” Needham said. “The students were able to get a first-hand look at what it takes to maintain all of the plants throughout the construction process. One of the main topics of interest at the Bombing Memorial was the “Survivor Tree” and how it was cared for, protected, and incorporated into the design of the memorial site.”

To gain a better understanding of the artistic side of floral design, Marie Ackerman, vice president of education at the Teleflora Education center, shared her expertise with the group regarding trends in floral design, including trends in colors, new arrangement styles and unusual containers.

“Overall this was a great competition with high quality plant material that challenged the evaluative and design abilities of the students,” Needham said. “We’re already looking forward to next year’s competition at University of Wisconsin — Platteville.”

Pi Alpha Xi established a photography contest in 1996 to be held annually in conjunction with the Annual Conference of the American Society for Horticultural Science. This year’s competition will take place at Westin Kierland Resort and Spa, Scottsdale, Arizona on July 16–19, 2007. The purpose of the contest is to promote excellence in photography as well as promote Pi Alpha Xi. A scholarship program is supported by entry fees associated with the contest, and several of the award-winning photographs are available as beautiful Pi Alpha Xi note cards. Please visit the Pi Alpha Xi National website (www.pax.okstate.edu) for sample images or contact Dr. Dave Graper at South Dakota State University by email at [email protected] to place a note card order.

New Members of Pi Alpha Xi New Initiates 2007

As students and faculty are beginning their plans for the future academic year, it also looks to be an exciting year ahead for Pi Alpha Xi with the talent evidenced in our 2007 class of initiates. We hope that all of our members and chapters can become involved and help celebrate the traditions of excellence, high achievement and enrichment of life through plants and ornamental horticulture that Pi Alpha Xi has helped to foster.

Congratulations to the 2007 initiates from the national officers of Pi Alpha Xi. We are honored to have you join us in Pi Alpha Xi and we look forward to following your success in horticulture.

In response to the Pi Alpha Xi Floral Evaluation and Design Competition at Stillwater, O.K. this past March, Marie Ackerman, Vice President of Education for the Teleflora Education Center in Oklahoma City, USA ran a story in the Myteleflora Newsletter about the event as a way to tell florists that Teleflora cares about their future - and how important it is to inspire young people in our industry. Ms. Ackerman indicated that some attendees asked about employment opportunities and wanted to let everyone know of one opportunity in Newport, Arkansas. Contact: John Purdy Shop Name: Purdy's Flowers Newport, Arkansas Phone: 870-523-5872 Email: [email protected] The business is 76 years old and has always been in the family - currently in the second generation of family ownership. They use Teleflora’s "big system" software - RTI which is pretty sophisticated and complete. Mr. Purdy is seeking an individual that is interested in learning about the business and grow into owning it. He thinks it is a great opportunity for someone like the students who participated in the Pi Alpha Xi Floral Evaluation and Design Competition.
