Let’s face it; there simply aren’t very many stock or original cars out there. For that matter, it appears that the majority of owners and enthusiasts much prefer modified cars, often the more modified, the better! This seems to go against the grain in the main-stream collector car community. Take for example the recent Barrett-Jackson auction. The TV announcer, talking heads seem to harmonize when a resto-mod or unoriginal car rolled across the block with chatter like, “it wouldn’t be that hard to return the car to original” or “the owner shouldn’t have changed the wheels”. This goes on and on. Over the years I have read published articles on Panteras in top auto rags that are critical of owners who modify their cars, attempting to impose the author’s own personal preference for originality upon their readers, as if adding a wing or a set of stainless mufflers would be akin to some offensive/immoral behavior. For years, at the prestigious Concorso Italiano in Monterey, California, I bristled when the Panteras were driven over the viewing stage and the announcer would voice his displea- sure over the modified cars while ignoring the fact that the vast majority of cars on display were modified. When it comes to the Pantera, stock or original cars from our experience do not carry any significant premium in value over a properly modified car. Indeed, when we have consigned very original cars, they often take the longest time to sell and often fail to realize the owner’s desire price. But yet, the so- called experts will condemn a modified car without the facts or knowledge to back up their harsh judgment. At PI Motorsports, Inc., we have sold dozens of cars in our 13 years of existence and although we have no sales preference as to modified vs. stock, we have seen this same scenario play out over and over. When given a choice, a potential customer will be drawn to the wide- bodied, modified engine or 17” wheeled Pantera at first sighting. This is also often true at car shows where both original and modified cars are displayed. It seems as though the modified cars will have spectators attracted to them in larger numbers then the bone-stock ones. One of the most interesting aspects of working here at PI Motorsports, Inc. is being able to meet and communi- cate with enthusiasts new to the Pantera hobby. One conclusion I can safely draw is that there is not as much interest as there used to be among new owners in the history and lore of the DeTomaso heritage. My involvement with the marque began in 1974 when my wife and I pur- chased our first Pantera. There was exquisite interest then by us and other owners we met, and in the later decades in any news from the DeTomaso factory or any nugget dug up that was of interest to the Pantera tifosi (an Italian word to describe a group of fans). Since the founder, Alejandro DeTomaso has passed away and the factory has been shuttered, it seems as though interest is waning in the historical features of the marque. The Constantly Evolving Pantera

One of the more controversialaspects of the Pantera is thefact that most cars are

modified. Let’s face it; there simplyaren’t very many stock or original carsout there. For that matter, it appearsthat the majority of owners andenthusiasts much prefer modifiedcars, often the more modified, thebetter! This seems to go against thegrain in the main-stream collector carcommunity. Take for example therecent Barrett-Jackson auction. This goes on and on.Over the years I have read publishedarticles on Panteras in top auto ragsthat are critical of owners who modifytheir cars, attempting to impose theauthor’s own personal preference fororiginality upon their readers, as ifadding a wing or a set of stainlessmufflers would be akin to someoffensive/immoral behavior. Foryears, at the prestigious ConcorsoItaliano in Monterey, California, Ibristled when the Panteras weredriven over the viewing stage and theannouncer would voice his displea-sure over the modified cars whileignoring the fact that the vast majorityof cars on display were modified.

individual who still actively promoteshis brand. The late, AlejandroDeTomaso was no Shelbyesquefigure and outside of Tom Tjaarda, there hasn’t been a spear-carrier forthe DeTomaso marque. In 2009, thebottom line is that the Pantera mustsell itself to the new customer. As asalesperson, you can’t brag aboutbella Italy and the quaint factory, etc.and hope a prospective buyer willwant to latch onto that propaganda asa life-style, sales-tactic. To interestsome new buyers we encounter whoare not satisfied with the Panterasperformance, comfort and designfeatures, we offer our capabilities ofbeing able to modify the Pantera in away that is appealing to the new andexisting owner. Starting with the design of thePantera itself, Tom Tjaarda simplynailed-it almost 40 years ago. Thefamiliar shape still makes people’shearts skip beats. Some latervariations of the fundamental design, such as the GT5 or ‘5-S are alsostirring. The most popular presenta-tion we believe is the Group IVPantera. This is also my personalfavorite because it recalls thePanteras racing history. Taken as a whole, nearly everyPantera owner has already upgradedtheir engines in some way even if it issomething as simple as addingheaders or a new carburetor. At theother extreme, it is not uncommon inPantera circles to find engines withwell over 500 horsepower, forcedinduction systems, nitrous oxidesystems and DOHC engines. Thatisn’t even news anymore. Big alloywheels, even 20 inchers, killer brakesystems, trick exhaust and mufflerpipes, rectangular headlights, carbonfiber and custom seats are nowroutine Pantera fare. What could benext? At PI Motorsports, Inc., we havepositioned our company to be able torespond to our customer’s tastes, desires and dreams when it comesto modifying their cars. We nowregularly create unique headlightsand one-of-a-kind instrument panels.Other related modifications we canexecute include installing state of theart sound systems, reverse mountedtelevision cameras, custom interiorsand cable-shifting systems withpaddle shifters. When we are in theplanning stages of mapping out a

customer’s modification plans, we seldomhear any chatter or concern from the ownerthat modifying the car may spoil its value ordesirability. This does not seem to be apriority over creating a car that more suits theowner’s preferences than some authority onPanteras who thinks it is a sacrilege to modifya stock car. The only advice we can offer is toadvise the owner to save any parts removedfor future re-installation or inclusion in a futuresale of the car if desired. We are always mindful that the Panterahobby is diverse and that the owners havemany different tastes. As a past-president ofseveral DeTomaso enthusiast clubs, I havemet hundreds of owners and each seems tohave their own individual taste or preferenceas to how a “dream” Pantera should be. Thisis one of the many reasons that I am stillpassionate over the Pantera and am alwaysamazed at how this car keeps evolving. If youare contemplating any modifications to yourcar, rather they be large or small, we invite youto contact us to discuss your plans andallowing PI Motorsports, Inc. to make yourdreams come true. We have the experienceand capabilities to turn dreams into reality andto work within a set budget.Dave Adler

PCNC Fun Rally Speed TrialsAn Ideal Venue to Enjoy Your Pantera Safely at SpeedStory by Larry Finch

So you own a Pantera? You are among the lucky few knowing howthese thirty-five year old cars still hold a magic most of their late-model counterparts can never deliver. But what do you really have?

You have an all-steel, fully welded monocoque body encasing a depend-able, high-horsepower mid-mounted Ford Cleveland V-8 engine, four-cornera-arm suspension with four-wheel power disc bakes, rack and pinionsteering, near bullet-proof German fully synchronized five speed transaxle, factory air conditioning, power windows, and more luggage space than anyother mid-engine exotic. In short, you own the ultimate GT sports car. And what do you do with it? Attend a local car show or two each year?Maybe venture out for a weekend cruise now and then? Or do you really letyour Pantera stretch her legs for some good, long excursions on a desertedroad; tipping the tach needle into the red, listening to the Cleveland sym-phony six inchesbehind your ears, cutting the corners tofind that straight lineand leaving the turmoilof every-day lifesomewhere in the rearview mirror? Just as each Panterais now unique to itself,so too are the manyways by which we eachenjoy our cars. But formost owners, takingour cars to a roadcourse track event issomething usuallyviewed as much toorisky and dangerous. But I’d like to helpdispel those fears andencourage you toattend the annual trackevent sponsored byThe Pantera Club ofNorthern California(PCNC), being heldthis year on June 11 and 12 during the POCA Fun Rally in Reno, Nevada. If you have driven your Pantera on public roads, you have already exposedyourself to greater danger than you will experience at the Speed Trials. ThePCNC event is not arace; it has no lap timingand no winners, and isin fact classified as aDriver School. Eachdriver is grouped withothers according to theirexperience, a helmetand appropriate clothingis required, and you areon track with alert driversall going the samedirection with the samegoal of having fun andstaying safe. You will

All drivers attendmandatory driver meetings prior toeach day’s activities, all Group Cdrivers must attend daily classroomscovering safety and driving technique, and in-car instruction is available tohelp drivers fine-tune their developingskills. The Speed Trials run on Thursdayand Friday, starting at 7a.m. andending at 5:00p.m. The course for

2009 is at the Reno-Fernley Race-way, about a thirty-minute drive fromthe Fun Rally host hotel, CircusCircus. We have chosen our layout tooffer a safe course with sometechnical aspects and yet a frontstraight that will easily see triple digitspeeds. Three driver groups, A, B andC, alternate their half-hour sessionsthroughout the day. Corner workersare placed strategically around thecourse to respond to any driver errorsand paramedics with an ambulanceare on-site all day. There is ampletrackside covered tables and seatingfor watching and relaxing, and foodand drink are available. You may think your car is not suitedto a track event, but while there is atechnical inspection your vehiclemust pass, in reality a solid, well-maintained car will most likely passinspection with flying colors. seats belts are fine for the Newbies ingroups C and B and the required helmetcan very likely be borrowed from anotherdriver in another group. You’ll need toadd shut-off valves to your heater lines, and your car will need numbers. Andthat’s about it. If this is beginning tosound pretty easy, you’re right. We wantto get Pantera owners to begin tounderstand what their cars weredesigned to do, and we guarantee you’llhave fun learning, too! And just perhaps, the instruction and knowledge you learnon the track may provide the neededskills to transform a potential publicroad accident to just a heart stoppingclose call. Your regularpolicy likely has exclusions that void yourcoverage, even at a High PerformanceDriver Education Event (HDPE) such asours.
