General Regulations
ST CECILIA MUSIC EXAMINATIONS
The St. Cecilia examination system has been operating for over 38 years.
It provides teachers and music students with an accredited system of
assessment based on sound educational and musical principles.
We are prepared to operate as flexibly as possible without compromising the
efficiency and standards which have been carefully set. But in order to allow
the system to work fairly and at a minimum cost to everyone concerned we
do rely on teachers and students adhering to a few basic regulations.
Ensure that entry forms are fully and accurately completed. Submit
with the completed entry form to cover the total
cost of examinations entered. We advise against paying by cash for security
reasons and will not take responsibility for problems arising in such
circumstances.
Entry forms and fees must be submitted online or posted on or before the
closing date. Late entries may not be accepted or will incur additional
costs.
Refunds and credit of examination fees will not be made. A half-fee re-entry
permit will be issued to students who are able to supply a medical certificate
of their scheduled examination appointment.
Students entered for one session may not transfer to another without payment
of the full examination fee.
Once examination appointments have been made it is usually not possible to
change or rearrange times or to substitute appointments with other students
without additional costs being levied.
Teachers and students must ensure that they are aware of the legalities in regard
to the photocopying of music. Deliberately copied material is not acceptable
unless bona fide evidence of permission to copy is made available to the examiner.
By submitting an entry form with appropriate fees, it will be understood that
these regulations have been read, understood and accepted.

Concert Certificate Examinations are available for all instruments and voice at all levels. These examinations provide students with the opportunity of preparing and presenting aninteresting programme in a formal concert-style environment.
Presentation should include appropriate formal concert dress, a professionally-presented andinformative programme as well as a well-timed and constructed concert programme.
An audience may be present but the hiring of venues including conditions of hire ie. insurance, cleaning etc. remains the responsibility of the candidate.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
· four items must be presented which reflect an interesting and well-balanced programme.A particular theme may be incorporated eg. music of one composer; a reflection of amood or scene; a particular country.
· technical work (scales etc) is not a requirement for these examinations.
· items should be chosen from the current SCSM grade syllabus. eg. Concert CertificateThree items should be chosen from any of the listed works in the Grade Three syllabus.Alternative items may be presented with prior approval.
· appropriate formal concert dress and accepted stage presentation (bowing, audienceacknowledgement) is a major part of the assessment. School uniform is not consideredappropriate.
· an imaginatively set out written programme, containing interesting and informativedetails on the pieces to be performed, must be presented to the examiner. Relevantbiographical notes on the performer are appropriate.
Accurate timing of the examination is important and will be assessed accordingly. Studentsare advised to plan their programme to fit within the following time limits: ConcertCertificate Beg (2-10 minutes); Concert Certificate Jun (3-10 minutes); Concert CertificatePrel (4-10 minutes); Concert Certificate 1 (6-10 minutes); Concert Certificate 2 (7-10minutes); Concert Certificate 3 (8-12 minutes); Concert Certificate 4 (9-12 minutes); ConcertCertificate 5 (11-15 minutes); Concert Certificate 6 (12-15 minutes); Concert Certificate 7(16-20 minutes); Concert Certificate 8 (17-20 minutes).
Helpful advice when preparing for all Concert Certificate Examinations:
· Ensure the performance is played in the order as detailed in the Concert programme.
· Stage etiquette includes bowing, and acknowledgement of the accompanist. Thisshould be treated in a dignified and mature manner.
· The performance should be technically accurate as well as musically aware.
· Performance dress should be representative of a professional public concert. Casualclothing, school uniforms, inappropriate foot wear are not acceptable.
· Arrange adequate rehearsal time with the accompanist and ensure that there is goodcommunication during the performance. .
· Engage the audience during the performance. Be organised and professional. Theperformance must not appear to be a rehearsal.

GRADES 1-8
St Cecilia Pianoforte Performance Syllabus
The following syllabus has been designed to provide a structured course that willenable the student to develop pianistic skills, whilst choosing music froma wide selection of pieces that should appeal to various personal tastes.
The candidate must play four items selected from four large lists of works. Theseinclude a study (to Grade 6) and three other pieces from different musical periods. While this syllabus is classically based, pieces of jazz and blues styles are includedin the 20 /21 century section from Grades 1 to 5.
There are opportunities to play works by female composers - e.g. Clara Schumann,Louise Farrenc and Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn's sister).
Candidates may also play complete works and this becomes mandatory in Grade 8,for Items 1 and 2, thus enabling the student to experience the typical format of manyprofessional recitals.
The syllabus is an extension of the early grades of the St. Cecilia examinationsystem: Beginners, Junior and Preliminary. Unlike these exams, however, thegrades which follow have no ear test, or musicianship sections; nor are there anysight-reading tests. The focus is placed on musical performance, technical skill andknowledge of the works presented, however, this does not imply that aural andreading skills are insignificant or irrelevant to a sound musical training - merely thatthey are not required in these examinations.
It is impossible to give an exciting, or even a competent performance without a solidtechnical foundation; therefore, the technical work section has been carefullystructured to ensure the constant development of various skills and a soundknowledge of all keys.
The groups of keys - particularly in the early grades - have been chosen according tofinger patterns, to enable ease of learning. All keys have been covered by Grade 6and are presented again in various ways in grades 7 and 8.
As in Beginner, Junior and Preliminary,, even when they are not printed on the music.
Speeds of scales and arpeggios gradually increase, dynamics are added and, whenthe technique has strengthened, staccato and double octaves are required.
th st
dynamic contrasts will be expected in allgrades
17
The final section of each examination - “Programme Notes” - requires the student tobe aware of certain theoretical aspects of their pieces.
From Grades 1 to 4 this is directly related to the content of the score and will consistof the familiar question and answer format.
For the remaining grades, candidates are to present information about of theirpieces, (candidate's choice) including an analysis of the work and stylisticcharacteristics in relation to the historical period in which it was written. Theinformation is to be presented orally, with reference to written notes of which theexaminer will be given a copy.
With this rather different approach to the “General Knowledge” section ofexaminations, it is hoped that students will research and then retain the relevantinformation, presenting it as it might be found in the programme notes at a concert.

C. PROGRAMME NOTES (10 marks)
St Cecilia Pianoforte Syllabus
38
The First Recital Certificate examination is available for all instruments and voice and isrecommended to be taken either before or after the Grade Five examination. This
examination provides musicians with the opportunity of preparing and presenting aninteresting programme in a formal recital-style environment.
Presentation should include appropriate formal concert dress, a professionally-presentedand informative programme as well as a well-timed and constructed concert programme.
An audience may be present but the hiring of venues including conditions of hire ie.insurance, cleaning etc. remains the responsibility of the candidate.
EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
· four items must be presented which reflect an interesting and well-balancedprogramme. A particular theme may be incorporated eg. music of one composer; a
reflection of a mood or scene; a particular country.
· technical work (scales etc) is not a requirement for these examinations.
· At least one item from the Grade Five SCSM syllabus should be included.
· appropriate formal concert dress and accepted stage presentation (bowing, audience
acknowledgement) is a major part of the assessment. School uniform is notconsidered appropriate.
· an imaginatively constructed written programme, containing interesting and
informative details on the pieces to be performed, must be presented to the examiner.Relevant biographical notes on the performer are appropriate.
· accurate timing of the examination is important and will be assessed accordingly. The programme should be planned to last between 15 and 20 minutes. Entire works
including repeats are encouraged.
·
Helpful advice when preparing for the First Recital Certificate Examination:
· Ensure the performance is played in the order as detailed in the Concert programme.
· Stage etiquette includes bowing, and acknowledgement of the accompanist. Thisshould be treated in a dignified and mature manner.
· The performance should be technically accurate as well as musically aware.
· Performance dress should be representative of a professional public concert. Casual
clothing, school uniforms, inappropriate foot wear are not acceptable.
· Arrange adequate rehearsal time with the accompanist and ensure that there is good
communication during the performance. .
· Engage the audience during the performance. Be organised and professional. The
performance must not appear to be a rehearsal.
