Dear Parents/Guardians,

The 2018-19 school year is almost coming to an end; what a great year to be a Pic-co Panther! Our students have completed their post-test assessments in February and we are now in the middle of PARCC testing. I have spoken to all of the students about setting goals to improve their PARCC scores this year over last year’s scores. Although we are on the home stretch of the school year, we urge all sixth grade students to work consistent-

ly to maintain the high standard of success through to the end of fourth quarter. This enables our sixth grad-

ers to start their seventh grade year strong, with well-developed, positive work habits.

Students need to continue writing all assignments in their agendas. Parents are encouraged to

keep checking the agenda book to see if students are still using them and to check for missing

assignment stamps since spring fever has arrived for some of our students. In addition,

Parent/Student Vue is still a great tool for parents and students to check for missing assign-

ments and their current grades. We suggest parents contact specific teachers by e-mail if you

want to track your child’s success in a particular class.

In addition to May flowers, May also will be bringing PARCC testing, so please make sure your student is well

rested. Please make time to celebrate the end of the year with the final Sixth Grade Award Assembly on June

12th.

The 7th graders recently went to the Newseum in Washington, DC and en-joyed learning about the his-tory of the news and media. Mr. Hoefert planned a really fun scavenger hunt that was enjoyed by all!

Please remember that locker times are after 4th period and after 8th period. There should be no one at their lockers at any other time, unless they have a signed pass from a teacher. We are no-ticing a lot of people at their lockers right before lunch. Please make sure to get everything you need from your lock-er after 4th period. We hope everyone finishes out the fourth quarter on a strong note. PARCC testing starts very soon, and schedules are a little different. Please listen when your teachers give you instructions on where and when you are testing. Also, take your time and do your best on the test.

Piccowaxen parents. We would like to take a moment to remind everyone

that Bus Passes are for emergency situations only. They will not be approved

for reasons of conveniences. A bus pass request to go to a relative’s house

for the next 3 days because parents will be out of town is an emergency re-

quest and would be approved. Thank you for your support and understanding. Students who present bus

pass requests in the morning that are denied, will be given the opportunity to call home.

If it is necessary to drop off items (lunches, homework, instruments, permission slips, keys, notes, etc.) for your child, please give the item to the office staff. We will call students down between classes so that we are not interrupting an entire class. Thank you.

When corresponding with school staff via email, please include your child's name in the subject area of any email. Your child's name in the subject area will help the staff from accidentally deleting your email as though it were spam.

Parents, please keep in mind our policy on work requests for students who are out sick. A student must be out 3 days before we can gather the work. Teachers are allowed 24 hours to get the work ready. If a student is out and will return the next day, the student may get the make up work when returning to classes.

Can you believe we are in the 4th quarter? By now students have brought home their course selection sheets for next year. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s placement for next year please contact your child’s teacher.

Mr. Martin visited all math classes to talk with students about their goals for the 2018-2019 PARCC. During this time, the students were able to reflect on their scores from last school year, then make a personal goal for this year. Ask your child to see their reflection sheet and see the goals they have set for themselves. Is your child having difficulty with a concept? When they get home from school, have they forgotten what they learned that day? There are great web sites out there for students to use, for instance, www.khanacademy.org. This web site provides practice on a variety of different skills. It also has the option for hints to help guide the student through the problem.

Mrs. Turner:

End of year tidbits: Our Student Service Learning

Kindness Action Project was very successful and

positively impacted all involved. I was im-

pressed with the students’ choices and their re-

flections in their Kindness Journals; the required

reflection essay was discussed and composed as

a whole class activity.

Novel studies are coming to a close and all stu-

dents will be embarking on a study of Shake-

speare.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank

students, parents, and guardians for their hard

work and support this year. I also wish you a

relaxing summer!

Mrs. Buter & Ms. Langston:

Ms. Langston and Ms. Buter are extremely

proud of the work their students completed

during the 3rd marking period. The 3rd mark-

ing period’s curriculum dealt with the horrors

and tragedies of the Holocaust. We are fortu-

nate to now be able to end the year with a

curriculum where our students will study the

complexity of comedy.

Students will learn how to analyze the types

of comedy and the various elements authors

use to create humor. Students will under-

stand the use of a variety of performance ele-

ments (staging, set design, lighting, sound,

props) and interpretive choices for comic ef-

fect (tone, pronunciation, inflection, facial ex-

pressions, gestures, movement, and blocking)

for comic effect.

Lastly, our students will be introduced to the

works and times of William Shakespeare.

6th grade students are studying Ecology during the quarter. 4th Quarter - Students will be able to: Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts

of an ecosystem. Construct an explanation that predicts patterns of interactions among organisms across multiple eco-

systems. Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and

populations of organisms in an ecosystem. Construct an argument supported by empirical evidence that changes to physical or biological compo-

nents of an ecosystem affect populations.

7th grade students are studying Genetics and Natural Selection during the quarter. 4th Quarter - Students will be able to: Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical ge-

netic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influ-

ence the growth of organisms. Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromo-

somes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism.

Gather and synthesize information about the technologies that have changed the way humans influ-ence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms.

Use mathematical representations to support explanations of how natural selection may lead to in-creases and decreases of specific traits in populations over time.

8th grade students are studying Fossil Record, Natural Selection, and Embryology during the quarter. 4th Quarter - Students will be able to: Analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, ex-

tinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth under the assumption that natural laws operate today as in the past.

Apply scientific ideas to construct an explanation for the anatomical similarities and differences among modern organisms and between modern and fossil organisms to infer evolutionary relationships

Analyze displays of pictorial data to compare patterns of similarities in the embryological development across multiple species to identify relationships not evident in the fully formed anatomy.

Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a popula-tion increase some individuals’ probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.

Prepare for promotion. As we approach the end of the year, students should locate any borrowed materials so that the return pro-cess at the end of the year goes smoothly. If any students borrowed any equipment from Piccowaxen to use in their Science experiment, please return the items to the proper teacher so a financial obligation is avoided. Remember to finish the year strong.
