of Art Notes: A sketch of a nude giant with beard and bushy hair seated with his back turned as he looks over his right shoulder. This cover has been taken from an etching-aquatint by the celebrated Spanish painter Francisco Goya. The terrifying Colossus (sic) is shown “dwarfing the world, a magnificent and brutish figure who dominates the universe yet looks upon it without comprehension.” (Canaday 1959) Another art critic writes that the true title of this work is the Seated Giant and he describes it – “The giant sits, under a crescent moon, turned mostly away from us, his head gazing over one shoulder in our direction, as if alerted by some sound that we can’t hear, toward something that we can’t see.” (Kimmelman 2008) The French pic cover had the painting tinted gray-green, but the Japanese cover
copied the painting approximately and tinted the man and the crescent moon yellow. _____________________________________ PC-ICP-ER4 France 1979 45: CAPITAINE CAVERNE Perf: Roger Carel, etc. (Spoken Word – Children’s) Label: CBS 10864 Artist: Hanna-Barbera Productions Notes: Covered with long body hair, Captain Cavern lived in an artificial cave that rode on top of a van, which was driven by one of the Teen Angels (Brenda, Lili, & Babette), a team of three girls who went around doing good. A ladder made with bones for rungs allowed the caveman to descend from his cave to the ground.
But he could equally well fly through the air towed along by his magic club and is shown doing just that on the back cover of this EP (on left). A bird pops out of the end of his club and talks to him. The three girls are walking along and one of them, Lili, points to Captain Cavern in the sky. The van with the artificial cave on the roof is in the distance. Captain Cavern is also shown on the back cover looking up at a cartoon mammoth and tyrannosaurus rex with a small lion standing by. The opening teaser on the EP remarks – “Capitaine Caverne !!! Trois drôles de filles exploraient une caverne au fin fond du Tibet quand elles se trouvèrent nez à nez avec un homme préhistorique : le

On the back cover is a grouping of 6 drawings from the series, one of which shows a prehistoric man in a cave dancing around, wielding his club. On the wall are paintings of a mammoth, reindeer, bison, and two human stick figures with spears. A flaming torch has been wedged in a crack in the wall. This is from the 5-page back section of the book, which tells of present-day children’s class on prehistoric music and culture. The bottom left portion of the cover has a half-circle cutout that reveals the label of the CD, which is in a plastic pouch glued to the inside front cover. The light brown label of the CD has a silvered illustration of Naoum dancing on La dent du tigre (Tiger’s Tooth Rock) while playing his bone flute and rattling the shell collar. The rear flanks of the wolf appear on the back cover of the CD. Notes: This drawing shows a caveman band wearing animal skin outfits playing (bass, drums, & guitar) in front of a cave where a cavewoman stands in the entrance holding a candle. Everyone has their eyes closed. This illustration was first used on the 1960 British EP and later reused for a 1961 French EP of the Piltdown Men’s Gargantua EP, which did not include “McDonald’s Cave.” For the latter EP some color was added to the figures and the sky became blue. Then in 1998 this illustration was used a third time for the British compilation CD. The backside of the 1960 British EP has a variant of this illustration where a rock instrumental trio (drums, bass, & sax) is playing in front of the same cave. Instead of the crescent moon in the upper left there is a dinosaur peering over the small cave hill. The same drawing was used both on the inner tray card and on the label of the CD.
