On the left is the wooden Goldminers Dance Platform in the Hall of Terpsichore just inside in the southeastern portion of the Southern Arch. There’s a long history of dancing and concerts in the Hall of Terpsichore. “By 1854 gold mining was becoming established in the proximity of the caves… and the miners started to use the Arch as a regular meeting place. LP: THE CAVE COMES ALIVE! Perf: The Lime Spiders (Rock) Prod. Co: Virgin Records (EMI Group) Label: (Picture disc) Virgin VOZ 2006x Artist: Cody Anderson Notes: This gatefold cover has a great deal of cave iconographic material. The front cover is a hodge-podge of garish artwork. The faces of the four members of this Australian rock group become part of different cave formations: two in profile on either side and two frontal masks incrusted into the middle of tall stalagmites in the middle of the cover. These two tapered stalagmites would seem to be repeated stylized facsimiles of the Minaret stalagmite in the River Cave at Jenolan Caves.

Blue stalactites hang from the top and several animals are scattered around the borders: (from the top edge clockwise) three spiders, a lizard, four frogs, a snake, a crab, and the head of a roussette bat. A record player sits on a stalagmite in front of the two central figures. The picture disc of this album reproduces in square shape within the round circle of the disc the same artwork from the original cover. This Australian garage-punk band was allegedly named after an Australian tropical drink. However, the meaning behind the album title remains a mystery. Did they give a concert in a cave in Australia or elsewhere? Well, they did give a concert at the Cave Club, Austin, Texas, on October 22, 1987. All the numbers on this album, except “Jessica,” were performed in Austin.

(Darren n.d.) So maybe that’s what the album title refers to. None of the numbers on this album are cave or bat-inspired. Notes: The photo on the CD is a view looking straight down a forced conduit passage in an unidentified cave, which might be in a cave on Vancouver Island. Dangerous Dick and The Duckbusters are members of the Vancouver Island Cave Exploration Group (VICEG). Looks like it might just be a passage in Resonance Cave on Vancouver Island (see photo on left). _____________________________________________________ CHINA Moon-in-Water Cave Elephant Trunk Hill, Guilin PC-RE-PD4 China ca.2000 CD: GUILIN SHAN SHUI

Perf: 余亦五 YU Yiwo (Yu Yi Wu) (Contemporary)

Label: Meika MKJP-0003D Photo: (Color) (?) Notes: Elephant Trunk Hill is a major, much-visited landmark located at the confluence of the Peach Blossom River and the Li River, practically in the center of the city. It is considered so significant that it has become the symbol of the city, depicted as a logo on the labels of many commercial items such as local green tea and canned preserves. The “elephant trunk” is created by a cave remnant tunnel, called Moon-In-Water Cave, running through the north end of a tower karst hill. It can be reach by foot trails around the back end of the hill where there are two entrances; the large arched main tunnel entrance and a smaller phreatic tube, which breaks into the southwest wall of the tunnel. The tunnel itself is 25m long, 10m wide, and 12m high bearing northwest while the small side passage bearing north is 13m long and 2m in diameter. A shallow meter-wide water channel runs down the middle of the tunnel with ledges on either side. Inside and outside the cave are many stone inscriptions of poems by poets and painters of the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). Stone picnic tables and stools are set under a partially man-made overhang at the south base of the hill next to the cave, where musicians sometimes come and play. _____________________________________________________ FRANCE Grotte de Lascaux Montignac, Dordogne PC-RE-PD5 New Zealand 1999 CD: THE MAN WHO PAINTED CAVES Perf: David Antony Clark (New Age) Label: (New Zealand) White Cloud 11041 (Spain) Resistencia RESCD 102 Artist: (Prehistoric) Notes: A poor copy of the "Chinese Horse" (Cheval chinois) on the right (west) wall of the Axial Gallery. Many disfiguring errors have been made in this reproduction especially regarding the colors, the overall proportions, and the rendering of the horse's head, mane, forelegs, and tail. The only thing the copyist seems to have gotten right is the hind legs.

The simplified form of this horse was imprinted in faint pink six times, ringed around the center hole, on the compact disc itself. However, these six Paleolithic horses are printed so faintly on the metal surface of the CD that it was not possible to make a scan of the CD. (Contemporary) Label: LCDPS 01 Photo: (Color) (?) Cover Design: Claire Guiral & Philippe Poirier Notes: One of the best negative handprints on the walls of this Paleolithic art cave was reversed and used for the cover design of this album. Other handprints from this cave were faintly reproduced on the back cover of the liner notes booklet. On the back cover of the liner notes booklet the Paleolithic engraving of the "dancing sorcerer" in the Grotte des Trois Frères (Ariège) playing a nasal flute is reproduced (in orange) in a montage which also shows negative hand prints from Cueva del Castillo, an engraved rhombus, and a scene of drapery formations and a stalagmite in an unidentified cave, possibly Grotte de Pech-Merle. This same figure of the dancing sorcerer is reproduced (in black) on the dark maroon label of the CD disc. PC-RE-PD8 Italy ca.1980s LP: FRASASSI – LE GROTTE IN CONCERTO Perf: Giancarlo Ragni (New Age) Label: Vallemaria (?) Photos: (?) Notes: This is a vinyl picture disc with a color photos imbedded into the vinyl on both sides showing speleothems in the world-class Italian show cave, Grotte di Frasassi (Grotta Grande del Vento). Side one shows the Cascata del Niagara (The Niagara Waterfall) flowstone cascade (located in the early section of the tour route) and side two shows the white column and other formations in the Sala 200 (located further along the tour route). Unquestionably the nicest, most spectacular cave picture disc ever released. It is worthy of framing and hanging on the wall, which is exactly what the British caver and bookseller, Tim Stratford, did for several years. Be forwarded this is a rare record, quite difficult to find. For more information on the cave-inspired music recorded by Giancarlo Ragni see under New Age Music –Italy. Co: AMCOS Label: (Label or Cat. No. Unknown) Photo: (Color) (?) Notes: The cover has a backlit close up of two nice calcite draperies in the Waitomo Caves. _____________________________________________________ SPAIN Cuevas de Altamira Santillana del Mar, Cantabria PC-RE-PD13 Spain 1978 CD: GIBRA'ARA Label: Beringia BCD-002 Perf: Amarok (World & New Age) Photo: (?) Notes: The CD cover is one half of a foldout cover of the liner notes booklet. It shows several bisons in the central portion of the cave ceiling. This photo has been treated to give the polychrome bisons a purple hue. A negative simplified detail of the bison in the lower left of the cover photo was imprinted faintly on the label of the compact disc itself. ________________________________________________ PC-RE-PD14 Spain 2003 LP: CUEVAS DE ALTAMIRA Perf: IBIO (Rock) Label: Fonomusic 5046703312 Artist: Mario Gómez Calderón Notes: The label of the reissue CD reproduces a portion of the prehistoric cave entrance scene that appeared on the cover. It shows a rolling coastal plain under a clear starlit sky during one of the Quaternary interglacial periods. In the right foreground, there is a portion of a large cave entrance lit from within by firelight. A Paleolithic painting of a resting bison (a rough copy of the one in the Altamira Cave ceiling) can be seen on the cave wall. Outside in front of the cave are two prehistoric people, their backs turned to us. One squats and plays a flute while the other stands (on left) looking out to the sea and the snow-covered mountains in the distance. Actually the narrow entrance to the Altamira Cave does not in any way resemble this cave entrance and the polychrome paintings of the bulls are on the ceiling (not on the cave walls) located in a room a short distance from the entrance. But since the album title song here is wholly dedicated to the Altamira Cave it was considered appropriate to include this label art with real caves rather than imaginary caves. For more information about this album see under Rock Music – Progressive. Ref: Ibio, Cuevas de Altamira CD, Discogs

_____________________________________ Cueva del Valle Rasines, Cantabria PC-RE-PD15 Spain 2003 CD: SONIDO EN LA PENUMBRA Perf: Mario Gómez Calderón (Contemporary) Label: (No label) SA-57-2003 Artist: Mario Gómez Calderón, 2001 Notes: An idealized painting looking out of the black-silhouetted entrance of this cave to a blue night sky with stars and a crescent moon. An old caver holding a lantern stands next to his dog in the opening. The actual entrance ceiling with its spiky stalactites corresponds well with the ceiling here, but the floor area with its breakdown boulders and clay slope is a bit different from what is shown here. This painting was used for the posters advertising the first concert of the five-movement work of contemporary music, “Sonido en la Penumbra,” composed and performed by the Spanish caver, Mario Gómez Calderón, in the Cueva de la Cullalvera (Ramales de la Victoria, Cantabria) on August 25, 2001. In the summer of the following year this musical program (using the same poster) was again performed in the woods not far from the Puente del Diablo (Santander, Cantabria) on July 21 and in the woods outside the entrance of Cueva del Valle (Rasines, Cantabria) on August 17. This CD cover painting was also used on the CD itself. For more information on the cave-inspired music on this album see under Contemporary Art Music – Electronic. Puente del Diablo, etc. Santander, Cantabria PC-RE-PD16 Spain 2006 CD: EL REĠRESO Perf: Ibio (Rock) Label: 1. Artimaña AR 0030 Audio Multicanal 5.1 2. Artimaña AR 0030 Audio Estéreo Notes: This elaborate montage of overlapping vignettes of different unusual sites (lugares insólitos) in the Cantabrian region of northwestern Spain was originally painted to be used to illustrate the five-movement work of contemporary music, “Sonido en la Penumbra,” by the Spanish caver Mario Gómez Calderón. The subtitle of this work is" Sonido de momentos y lugares insolitos" (Sound of Unusual Moments and Places). This painting shows many historic sites, caves, and other natural sites in Cantabria; most of these are real

but some are imagined fantasy places. Only the cave related sites will be identified here. Moving counterclockwise from the top left: Puente del Diablo (natural bridge) at Santander; the Arroyuelos cave chapel near San Martin de Elines in the southern part of the province; an imaginary pioneer caver with lantern exiting a pit; a littoral cave at Faro del Caballo (lighthouse) at Santoña; the interior of an imaginary Paleolithic art cave where a pioneer caver and his dog admire the paintings while a modern caver negotiates a crawlway (upper right) (detail shown on left); a woods where an old expedition searched for a cave; and the pit submergence of the Sel de la

Fuente in the Sierra de Peña Labra. The central portion of the painting shows an imaginary arched cave entrance with red firelight shinning out; the Cadalso cave chapel near San Martin de Elines; and a dog watching bright light shining out of an imaginary pit. The labels of both CDs carry reproductions of the full poster of vignettes: dark purple-tinted on the multichannel CD and dark blue-tinted on the stereo CD (see under Picture Discs).
