Argentinian LP: Epic 47099 (Title : Murcielago fuera del Infierno) Artist: (Color) Corben, 1977 Notes: Probably the most famous bat picture cover. The painting shows a naked biker on his chopper rocketing at full speed straight out of the ground of a cemetery into a red sky. He is leaning way back horizontally in the seat in an ecstasy of speed. Attached to the fork handlebars is a horse's skull and flowing mane. The reins blend with the front brake cables. A full horse's tail streams out from the seat and mingles with the biker's long hair. Behind and to the right a huge bat stands atop a steeple-shaped tomb and, spreading wide its curved wings, seems to be screaming into the same red sky. A detail of this cover is shown here. The full cover image is presented under Marginal Cave Music – Rock. The LP releases of this album for Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Greece all had the same label and catalog number – Epic EPC 82419 – so they will not be listed here separately. They all have simple mask faces and spindly legs. The single picture sleeve was in black and white and for the LP album cover the bodies were black and the bat wings red. Stylized Bats No. 7 PC-BTS-AM7 United States 1985 LP: THE VAMPIRE STATE BUILDING Perf: Wade Raley (reader) (Spoken Word – Children’s) Label: Caedmon TC 1766 Artist: (Color) Kenneth Smith, 1984 Notes: A cartoon-style painting, looking up from the sidewalk at the Empire State Building in New York, shows a smiling bat with large ears flying into the foreground, while in the background five more bats fly around the skyscraper. In the main entrance at street level the Russian Bear, with the boy hiding behind his back, stares in astonishment at all the bats flying around. Another bat flies inside the entrance. This scene does not correspond to any episode in the original story. Kenneth Smith also illustrated the children’s book of this story, but this painting did not appear in either of the two editions of the book. See also under Spoken Word – Children’s Fiction – Bats. _____________________________________ Stylized Bats No. 11 PC-BTS-AM10 United States 1992 CD: FERNGULLY – THE LAST RAINFOREST – ORIGINAL SCORE Perf: Alan Silvestri (Film Music) Label: MCA MCJD-10619 Artist: (Color) (?) Notes: This very stylized bat figure, Batty Koda, flies around the forest here with two figures, the fairy Crysta and the human Zak. Batty Koda has a pig’s nose, crossed eyes, and hold his mouth open as he flies. Batty “is a fruit bat that was used as a scientific experiment and according to him, he was abused, which is most likely the cause of his insanity. He was voiced by Robin Williams in the first film and by Matt K. Miller in the sequel.” (Anon. n.d.) _____________________________________ Stylized Bat No. 13 PC-BTS-AM12 Germany 1994 Compilation Bootleg CD: MEAT LOAF Perf: Meat Loaf (Marginal Cave Music – Rock)

Label: (Not on label) LE 5000 Artist: (Color) Notes: A stylized black and tan bat with spread wings flies in front of a brick wall. This compilation includes a version of “Bat out of Hell” (Time – 11:24 – Tk 6) (see under Marginal Cave Music – Rock). Ref: Meat Loaf, Meat Loaf CD, Discogs

_____________________________________ Stylized Bats No. 14 PC-BTS-AM13 United States 1994 Compilation CD: SCARY SOUND EFFECTS Perf: (Various artists) (Bat Sounds) Label: Rhino 71776 Artist: (Color) Jaime Hernandez Notes: Four stylized bats fly in a purple night sky around an American gothic house. For more information see under Recordings of Bats– Counterfeit Bat Sounds. Ref: Scary Sound Effects, Allmusic

_____________________________________ Stylized Bat No. 15 PC-BTS-AM14 United States 1995 45: BATS Perf: Kitty Winder (Rock)

Label: Zero Hour 4 Artist: (Color) Dame Darcy, 1995 Notes: The front sleeve has a horrified woman with gothic makeup and a green dress throwing up her hands to catch at two bats that are caught in her brown hair. This, of course, is once again the illustration of the old wives’ tale about bats getting caught in women’s hair. The back cover has a long-eared bat flying while playing a clarinet. The record label also has black and white photos of real bats: Side A – a bat flight in the evening, possibly at Carlsbad Caverns and Side B – a photo of two bats hanging in rest but, if you read the song title, printed upside down (see here under Bat Picture Discs). For more information about the bat music on this single see under Rock Music – Punk – Bats. Ref: Kittywinder, Livre des Monstres CD, Allmusic Kittywinder, Livre des Monstres CD, Amazon

_____________________________________ Stylized Bat No. 16 PC-BTS-AM15 Canada 1997 Maxi Single CD: B-A-T MIX Perf: D. J. Knight (Rock – Dance) Label: (Canada) Madacy TWW-2-9037& (US) Madacy 4121 Artist: (Color) (?) Notes: A large stylized grey-blue bat with out-stretched wings occupies the center of the cover. In the background are several skyscrapers and high-rise buildings all back lit and highlighted by flashes from a lightning storm. _____________________________________ Stylized Bat No. 17 PC-BTS-AM16 United States 1997 CD: BATS AND BONES Perf: Karen Kiser (Popular Music) Label: Big-n-Boo (Catalog No.?) Artist: (Color) Notes: Four tiny bats are seen flying around in the two round medallions of a night sky that in the overall illustration serve as the eyes of a smiling face. Normally this illustrated cover would not be included here as the bats are too small, but since the title of the album is such this cover was counted. This CD contains four stories for children from Jeffrey Hinkey’s book of the same title. This was originally released as a CD only, so this is the first edition in print. The first track on the album is titled, “Bats and Bones” (from the book by this author), and is labeled “instrumental.” This track has not been heard and nothing further is known about it, but it is assumed that this is popular children’s music. Four tiny bats are shown flying around on the CD cover, so it is implied that this track has something to do with bats. See under Popular Music – UK & US Children’s Music. _____________________________________ Stylized Bat No. 19 PC-BTS-AM18 United States 1998 CD: DEEP DARK CURSE OF THE RAGGLE DUB Perf: The Mad Bats (Electronica) Label: C & S 8540 Artist: (Color) Notes: A horrified woman in a red dress flees toward us pursued by many (at least 12) bats flying in a green sky. It is difficult to tell whether the bat closest to us is a real bat or a well-drawn stylized bat. For more information about the bat music on this CD album see under Electronica Music – A to Cat – Bat World. _____________________________________ Stylized Bat No. 21 PC-BTS-AM20 United States 2004 CD: MEAT LOAF WITH THE MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA – BAT OUT OF HELL LIVE Perf: Meat Loaf (Rock) A. American CD: Mercury 06076-84721-2 B. British CD: Mercury 9868074 C. European CD: Mercury 9868337 D. Ukrainian CD: Ukrainian 9868337

E. Australasian CD: Mercury 9868337 Artist: (Color) (?) Notes: A variant on the earlier cover art used on the 1998 Meat Loaf compilation album, “The Very Best of Meat Loaf” (See above).

A stylized bat (half-wolf half-bat) with long human-like legs flies over the orchestra (replacing the city in ruins) where flames roar up behind the stage and escape high into the purple sky. Several other bats are seen flying near the Gothic towers of a cathedral in the distance. On the left are the vestiges of a thin pillar supporting a thick beam with someone standing at the end of the beam and in the distance more bats fly from the flames. Four clusters of flying bats, a total of over 40 bats, are seen in the purple sky. The European, Ukrainian, and Australasian CD releases cropped into this illustration, eliminating the cathedral and skeletal burnt remains on the left. _____________________________________ Stylized Bats No. 22 PC-BTS-AM21 United States 2005 CD: BATMAN BEGINS Perf: (Studio Orchestra) (Film Music) Label: Warner Sunset Z7CD 71324 Photo: (Unknown)

Notes: The cover shows Batman with his huge wings extended in flight as he descends from a bright sky between skyscrapers. Above him fly dozens of virtually created bats, which accompany him on his mission. The label of the actual CD has Batman carrying the woman he has rescued while behind him hundreds of

virtual bats fly in a sepia sky. Two stills of cave scenes from the film are included in the 4-page liner notes folder: one of Bruce Wayne standing and looking up to daylight in the Bat Cave (studio set) with a large chamber and a lake in the background (see under Film Music – Action) and the other is of the armored batmobile with six headlights blazing leaping through the waterfall at the entrance and charging into the Bat Cave. See under Film Music – Action – for the cave-inspired pieces on this album, Batman Begins (Soundtrack),

conducted by Gavin Greenway. Ref: Batman Begins, Allmusic Batman Begins, Amazon Batman Begins CDs, Discogs Batman Begins (2005), soundtrackcollector

_____________________________________ Stylized Bats No. 23 PC-BTS-AM22 United States 2005 CD: BATMAN BEGINS (Expanded Score) Perf: (Studio Orchestra) (Film Music) Label: (Bootleg Label & Cat. No Unknown)

(2XCDs) Artist: (Unknown) Notes: The cover shows Batman carrying a woman. Several bats are seen flying in the distant orange night sky and also in the foreground just behind Barman. Later releases of this double CD album used a different cover showing Batman in the Bat Cave with a stream of daylight coming down a pit shaft and several small bats flying in the distance. See under Film Music – Action – for the cave-inspired pieces on this album, Batman Begins (Extended Score), also conducted by Gavin Greenway.
