Over the past few months, our district has been working on imple-
menting Common Core Standards in math as well as new math cur-
riculum called Go Math. One of the main shifts with this change is
an increase in rigor. What does that mean anyhow? It doesn’t simp-
ly mean making math harder or having younger students tackle more
advanced topics. The Common Core approaches rigor from 3 direc-
tions – conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and
application to real world situations. This is a major shift from how
many of us adults learned math, which focused almost exclusively
on procedural skills and fluency. As I honestly reflect on my own
math education, the majority of it was with a “drill the skill” style.
We want today’s students to have a deeper understanding of num-
bers, know how to do calculations both traditionally and in new
ways, AND apply those skills to solve real life problems. As we are
all adjusting to this new approach to mathematics, there are many
resources available to help with the transition. The textbook pub-
lisher offers online tools for extra support like video tutorials and
online student editions. Your child’s teacher can help you access
these. There is an iPad app for grades K-5 called Go Math Daily
that provides additional support and practice problems. Our staff is
developing Parent Academy meetings to give parents strategies for
working with their children on
homework and building good
study habits in mathematics that
will endure with them in the
future. More info to follow!
