The Bridge Educational Trust The Bridge Educational Trust (Registered Charity No 1068720) was established in 1990 in memory of John Bridge, the last of the family which founded the Piddle Valley School in the middle of the 19th century. The objects of the Trust are educational, and grants are given primarily to those wishing to study at school, college, university or other educational establishment. Applications are particularly welcomed from residents of the Piddle Valley and its immediate neighbourhood. Normally applicants should be nearing the end of their school careers or have left school, though younger children with special educational needs may be considered. The Trustees give priority to cases involving hardship or difficult family circumstances and where, without some assistance, the desired education, course or activity would not be possible. Special consideration is given to older people who may wish to start training for a particular career or other purpose, after normal education has been interrupted. During the past year grants made by the Trust have included those to help university students with accommodation costs and equipment; to provide support for children with specific learning difficulties; and to provide training for adults hoping to change career. Meetings of Trustees to consider applications are held three times a year, normally in February, June and September. Applications should be received at least two weeks before the meeting at which they are to be considered. Please check the date of the next meeting, and the closing date for applications on the Trust website at www.bridgeeducationaltrust.org.uk. Those wishing to apply can complete an application form online, or request a form by emailing the Trust Administrator at [email protected] or by writing to the Trust c/o Piddle Valley First School, Piddletrenthide, DT2 7QL. Further details of the work of the Trust can be found on the website but if you feel that you would like to discuss a possible application with one of the local Trustees, please contact one of the following: Hannah Murphy (01300 348564), Richard Drewe (01300 348253), Nick Harland (01300 348272), or Olivia Steven (01305 567095). External Property Cleaning Services Render Cleaning Ideal for: Roof Cleaning Houses Paint Removal Offices Patio Cleaning Churches Organic contamination Listed Buildings Brick and stone cleaning. Using a super heated steam cleaner known as a ' DOFF ' machine it takes a normal water supply and can then rapidly heat it to 150 degrees. Once cleaned, the surface dries within minutes which prevents any long term damage as a result of trapped moisture. The surface being cleaned does not suffer any damaging pressure or thermal shock. Or we can use a method called Soft washing.. We can use a chemical based cleaner for walls and roofs and patios. This is achieved by using a diluted mixture of water and a chemical based ingredient to a mixture of anything up to 50:1, this is then either sprayed on to the walls or patios and left for a period of time before being washed off with water. It can then be treated with a biocide which can keep organic matter at bay for a longer period. Once the initial clean has been done we recommend having a biocide treatment once a year to keep the surface maintained as this product can work for up to 12 months. If you would like to book any of the above services then please contact.... JAMIE on.....

Window Cleaning Services
Commercial and residential window cleaning - We clean up to 80 ft from the ground using the latest water fed pole system which
use purified water. Internal windows can also be cleaned using the traditional methods too.
We clean all year round in all weathers except high winds for safety reasons and operate on a 4, 8, or 12 weekly cycle, with
cleaning all year round we can maintain a regular, high quality service for our clients.
Gutter Emptying Services
Gutters Blocked?
Why not get in touch for a free no obligation quote to have your gutters cleared and facias and soffits cleaned.
We operate from the ground using CCTV to ensure the gutters have been emptied completely, we can clean to a height of 50ft.
Gutters need to be cleared of debris in order for water to be carried away from the house so it does not cause damage to your
property by potentially back filling and flowing back into the property causing damp. In order to keep them working as they
should we usually book these in once or twice a year depending on the surroundings i.e.trees, hedges etc.
If you would like to book any of the above services then please contact JAMIE on

News, comings & goings in the valley ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alton PancrasAP We must start this column by correcting errors in the last edition regarding the AP Trust. Tim Carron Brown is the new chairman of the AP Trust, he does not have a hyphen anywhere in his name and Andy Fear is not a trustee of the Trust.
AP Dorchester Opportunity Group has expressed its thanks to the Brace of Pheasants carol singers for their £219 donation, much appreciated as the group’s Big Lottery grant funding had recently come to an end.
AP And now for something completely different! The new-style Village Fete will be held in the village centre, around the church, from 1.0pm on Sunday 20 May. Key players are Charlotte Gerard and Tim Carron Brown (without a hyphen!)
AP The Lent Lunch will be held at Alton Mill on Wednesday Mar 21 from 12.30pm in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Please let Jean Groome (348598) know that you plan to attend.
AP We know where most of the names on the Millenium Seat were living at the time but would readers please tell us the housenames/ex-addresses of BARTER DURSTON HAYTER MURLEY NEEDHAM TURNER WHITE and WILSON for the historical record via the e-mail below.
AP The statement of accounts for the church for 2017 can be viewed in the church porch at any time.
AP The late John Waterman held the title of the person who has lived in the village the longest who was born when his parents were living here, in his case 82 years. We wonder who qualifies for that ‘longest’ title now. How about Max Gooding, born 1996 when his parents, photographer Jonathan and Kirstie lived at Holcombe Mead – and still do. Can anyone beat this?
AP John Squibb seems the obvious candidate for the title but he was born when the family lived at Lyons Gate, moving to AP when he was three.
AP’s Following our recent times of being poorly and unwell, Mike and Julie Squires would like to thank all our dear friends and neighbours in and around Alton Pancras for their kindness and concern, together with cards, gifts and on-going practical help. Cheery support from you all has been very much appreciated.

Piddlehinton
News from The GreenWelcome to the first edition of News from Piddlehinton Millennium Green for 2018. We have a very busy but hopefully exciting year ahead of us.
In previous News from the Green we announced that the existing wooden play equipment would need to be replaced during 2018. Having identified companies and got quotations for new equipment, the Trustees selected Allplay Ltd – a company that has some of its roots in Dorset. The total cost for supply and installation will be £23,883.20.
Some very good news is that the application we made in November to the National Lottery Awards for All Fund was successful and we already have in the bank £9,372 we were granted. Further grant applications have been made, and there can be real optimism that a number of them will be successful too. The majority of the project cost will come from grant giving trusts.
These trusts do like to have evidence that the local community is supporting the project and so it is planned to hold a dedicated fundraising event to boost funds. This is to be held on FRIDAY 20 APRIL at Piddle Valley First School. STOMPIN DAVE, who gave us such a fantastic night a few years ago is coming to perform. He is very talented and his repertoire is wide – Blue Grass, Rock n Roll, Folk, Country and Blues. A hot supper of Ragu of Beef will be served and of course, a Bar. Tickets on sale for £10.
When it is completed – we hope in June/July 2018 – there will be a set of strong, safe play equipment (and we have learnt an important lesson because these timbers will be set into “steel boots” to avoid the damaging effects of ground water) which our children, grandchildren and all others visiting will enjoy in the safe environment of our Millennium Green.
We also have to remember that besides raising the money for this specific project, the Trustees still have to consider the general maintenance, upkeep and insurance of the Green (around £2000 per annum). As a self-funded registered charity we are reliant on support and donations for these monies. With this in mind we have our annual Easter Egg Hunt & Coffee Morning – Saturday 31 March – 10:00-12:00 Piddlehinton Village Hall (see poster in this edition of News & Views).
We are very grateful that many of you will have supported the Green by way of the Friends of the Green (FRoGs) Scheme whereby annual donations are made (minimum of £5 per person) but we are always looking to grow our band of FRoGs and Volunteers. Donations can be sent to me at 22 Paynes Close, Piddlehinton, DT2
42 www.piddlevalley.info
7TF (cheques made payable to Piddlehinton Millennium Green Trust) or handed to any Trustee. If you are able to Gift Aid your donation, you can download a form at www.gov.uk and select Gift Aid single donation or contact me and I will get a form to you. If you feel there is some way you can help as a volunteer on the Green by way of helping with upkeep (eg annual river clean), or helping/organising fundraising events, please come forward and speak to myself or any of the Trustees (details of Trustees on village notice board/Green notice board).
We do have a Facebook page to keep you up to date on what is happening on the Green so type in ‘Piddlehinton Millennium Green’ and request to join.

All Saints Piddletrenthide
Oh! WoodwormA stay problem led to the woodworm being noticed rather late at All Saints Piddletrenthide. Quick treatment prevented further damage. Several years later and after a couple of quotations the PCC agreed to repairs on a self help basis.
Following Remembrance Service last November local ringers parted the wheels of the second, third and fourth. Fortunately only the upper sections, when the bells are down, needed serious repair. These were taken, just fitting in my car, for re-soling with new shrouds to TLB Services at Collingham near Newark in early December. One week later I collected the repaired sections.
By Carol Service, December 17, with more volunteer labour we had the wheels back in place. Fortunately the sections all fitted together very well, thanks to the precision work of TLB Services. We are confident the bells should be fine for many more years. The remaining woodwork will be treated when the weather is more appropriate.
Special thanks go to Michael Howard-Tripp, Tim Jeanes, Graham Colyer for their generous help with tools and time which enabled this job to be completed so economically.

AGE UK DORCHESTER NEEDS VOLUNTEERS TO REACH OUT!
Age UK Dorchester has need of volunteers to join its Reach Out service to provide company and social support for older people. We are currently looking for a volunteer to visit a lady in Alton Pancras for a cup of tea and a chat once a week. We understand how difficult it can be to get out of the house and meet people and make new friends, so our service aims to give older people a helping hand to do just that. Our volunteers can help people to find out about activities, groups and clubs, and go along with them until they feel confident enough to attend on their own. Alternatively, if someone just wants some company they can receive a visit from a volunteer for coffee and a chat. If you: • Are a good listener• Have some spare time to give

• Enjoy volunteering• Like meeting new people• Be prepared to visit people at home• Would like to make a difference to the life of an isolated older person

Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance Coast to Coast Cycle Ride– Annual Appeal for Cakes, Sweets and Bananas.
This annual event will be taking place on Sunday 13 May 2018 and we are asking please for your help with donations of cakes, healthy snack bars, bunches of bananas and packets of jelly babies/wine gums/liquorice allsorts to “fuel up” and support the 600 cyclists who will be doing a 54 mile sponsored cycle ride from Watchet in Somerset to West Bay in Dorset to raise the vital funds needed to keep your Air Ambulance flying.
Air Ambulance volunteers run “pit stops” for these cyclists offering refreshments to refuel their efforts. We will be at Ilminster Ambulance Station as stewards for this popular event.
At present it takes £2.5 million per annum (£2500 per mission) to keep this vital Air Ambulance service operational and we are reliant on donations and fund raising efforts (no funding from Government or Lottery).
If you are able to help by donating cakes, bars, sweets or bananas, please could you bring them to Piddlehinton Village Hall between 10:00–12:00 on Saturday 12 May. Alternatively, if this time is not convenient they can be delivered to our home, 22 Paynes Close, Piddlehinton on Friday 11 or Saturday 12 May – afternoon/evening.
Thank you all so much for your continued support. Susan & Terry Dredge – 01300 348120

Dorset Trading Standards
One million ‘Friends’ by 2020A call to action for individuals, communities, businesses, neighbours and work colleagues to help ‘take a stand against scams’ has just been announced by the Government. The Friends Against Scams campaign, supported by Dorset County Council trading standards to help people spot and report scams, aims to train up to a million people to be Friends Against Scams by 2020.
Since its launch last year the Friends Against Scams campaign has already provided training to more than 30,000 people, helping them understand how to spot a scam and empowering them to help others from becoming victims.
Scams affect many people and anyone can be caught out by a scam. It is believed that only about 5% of scams are reported and it is therefore seen very much as a silent hidden crime. Victims can lose thousands of pounds, not just as a one off loss; often small amounts quickly add up to more substantial losses over many years.
You can support the Friends Against Scams campaign by completing a short awareness training session in person or online. The training gives you the confidence to spot and deal with scams yourself and to talk with and support others more confidently about scams.
Those who want to can take further steps to become a SCAMchampion by hosting awareness sessions to recruit Friends and driving Friends Against Scams forward in their communities. You could sign your company or organisation up to the campaign and train staff to become Friends Against Scams. Public figures can become a SCAMbassador by using their influence to raise the profile of scams at a national level.
www.piddlevalley.info 49
50 www.piddlevalley.info
For more information about the Friends Against Scams campaign and how you can get involved please visit https://www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk. If you think you have been the victim of a scam or would like advice about your consumer rights then please contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 040506.
The Banking ProtocolA 72 year old is one of hundreds of people saved from losing £1000s to a scam after bank staff cautioned him about proceeding with a transaction.
The gentleman had seen his dream car advertised on an internet auction site and had gone into his bank to withdraw £10,000 to pay for it. He was expecting to meet up with the seller and hand over the money in exchange for the car. Bank staff were concerned and used a new system to alert the Police and within 30 minutes officers were there. The police were able to carry out some checks and alert the gentleman to the fact he was about to be scammed.
Bank staff have been trained to spot signs that a customer may be conducting an unusual or out of character transaction such as withdrawing or transferring large amounts of money to give to scammers. Staff have a series of questions they can ask the customer to gauge if the transaction is fraud related. If they have concerns this is then referred to a senior manager who can phone the police or trading standards giving a code word which will summon help quickly.
This call made by the bank staff was one of over 1200 calls made to the Police or Trading Standards under the banking protocol system that should see an officer arrive within an hour. In the last 12 months 101 arrests have been made after banking staff have made calls under the banking protocol system. National Gardens Scheme at Ivy House GardenWe shall be opening our garden again this Spring from Easter weekend onwards. For anyone who hasn’t visited before but only seen the garden from the road, please don’t be put off by the dizzying heights you see stretched out before you! The ascent is not really so steep and there are plenty of gentle steps and strong handrails (not to mention numerous seats) to help you on your way. The views are spectacular and really quite a distraction from the plants (and the odd weed!) themselves. On your

Piddle Valley Parish Council ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MeetingsThe Piddle Valley Parish Council meets in Piddletrenthide Memorial Hall, normally on the last Tuesday of the month, at 7.30pm. Meetings start with a “Democratic period”, during which any local resident may personally raise direct to the Council any matter that affects the Valley community. So, if you have something important to say, please either contact your local Parish Councillor or raise it during the start of the next meeting. Please also note that Minutes of meetings are published on the website, so if you do not wish your name to appear, please state this before beginning speaking.
Next meetings are: 27th March, 24th April
Waste Collection arrangementsGeneral Waste & Food – March 9th, 23rd. April 6th, 20th Recycling & Food – March 2nd, 16th, 30th. April 13th, 27th
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – UPDATEWe have heard that West Dorset District Council have now confirmed that the draft copy of the Neighbourhood Plan is acceptable and they are now proceeding with preparations for the Referendum to Valley Residents.
DEFIBRILLATORS IN THE PIDDLE VALLEYWork continues by the working group to set up the VETS (Village Emergency Telephone System) which will provide contact numbers of people willing to help in the event of a defibrillator being required in an emergency situation. We are working at producing maps of all addresses in the villages to assist with locating properties. These maps will be stored in the defibrillator cabinets.
Although we put a request in the last News and Views for volunteers for the VETS, we have not received any offers. Please consider if you could be a volunteer. You do not have to be always available, and you do not have to respond if you get a call if you are unable. The more people we have on the system, the more likely it is that someone will be available to help.
Please contact [email protected], or leave a message on 01300 348566. Please include your name, contact number, which village you live in, and the best time to contact you. We will get back to you as soon as we can.
We are also still working with SSE to reconnect the electrical power supply to the Alton Pancras telephone box to power the heater that is necessary to keep the defib at an optimum temperature.
www.piddlevalley.info 55
Just to let you all know, in the last month both the Piddlehinton and the Piddletrenthide defibs were deployed to people who fell ill. Luckily, on both occasions they were not required.
COMMUNITY CAR SCHEME IN THE PIDDLE VALLEYThe Piddle Valley Parish Council has set up a working group to look at the possibility of a Community Car Scheme in the Piddle Valley.
Buckland Newton, Cerne Abbas and Puddletown all have these schemes.
The Dorchester Community Car scheme have agreed to extend their area to include the Piddle Valley for appointments at Dorchester Hospital. Contact Joan Hutson Telephone: 01305 269330.
NORDCAT have said that they would be willing to administer the scheme for us, so the administration would be taken care of. The key to the success of a community car scheme is car drivers who are available to spare some time to drive people to the doctors or to a hospital appointment. If you put your name forward, do not think that you will have to accept all requests for help you receive. The more people who volunteer, the less times you may be asked to help.
The mileage allowance is 50p/mile, and this can be claimed from home address, to the pick-up point, to the doctors/hospital, back to the pick-up point, and back to your home address.
This project is in its infancy. However, to know if it is viable, we need drivers. Please contact one of your Parish Councillors with your name, contact details, and address to express an interest, and they can forward your details to the Transport Working Group.

As a result of this meeting the Working Group sent out leaflets to all households in the Piddle Valley in the first week of January. 700 leaflets were distributed. It was included in your copy of the News and Views. The leaflet asked what requirements you had for a bus service in the Piddle Valley.
Sadly, only 6 replies have been received.
The leaflet also included details of NORDCAT who are willing to provide a bus service to Dorchester and Sturminster Newton. NORDCAT also accept free Bus Passes. Again, sadly, as we understand it, so far, they have only received one request for a bus Service.
Please, if you need a bus to get to Dorchester, you must return the form to a member of the Parish Council. Unless there is an identified need for a bus, we cannot take this project forward. The Dorset County Council subsidised Wednesday bus also needs to be supported if it is to continue.
The list of Parish Councillors is above.
POST OFFICE SERVICES IN THE PIDDLE VALLEYThe Parish Council have received the following information from the Post Office Service with reference to the Piddletrenthide Post Office.
“Firstly, I should say that we share the council’s concern that we haven’t so far been able to find a way forward that will see a service restored to the community. We remain totally committed to do so and I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience the absence of the service is causing to local customers. We do understand how much they value their Post Office service and they can be assured that we will continue our work to find a solution. I’m not sure how much you know of the work done to date, so it may be helpful to share that following the closure of the previous branch we tried to introduce a Post Office local style branch in the village shop, which is the most efficient and expedient way of seeing Post Office services restored when the former branch closed. This would have seen Post Office services match the opening hours of the shop and would have been supported by grant funding to create the new style Post Office. Unfortunately, and despite several conversations and meetings with Carol, her decision was that it wouldn’t be financially viable for her to acquire and operate the service. We have confirmed that if any future owners of the store are interested in acquiring a Post Office Local Model then this is something we would welcome. At Carol’s request we contacted Andrew Duke, an experienced Postmaster, to see if he would consider operating a service from the store on a temporary basis. Unfortunately, he advised that this is not something he could consider at this time.
58 www.piddlevalley.info
Given the above, the only practical solution therefore was to try and secure the services of a local Postmaster to operate a Post Office Outreach service within the store for a number of hours each week. We had secured the services of Andrew Farrow, Postmaster from Cerne Abbas, who has provisionally agreed to provide a service to Piddletrenthide from the shop. However, in the meantime Mr Farrow has sold his business with the branch transferring to new owners in the next few weeks. Once the new owners are in place then we will formally discuss the opportunity of adding Piddletrenthide outreach to the current communities that the branch serves. The new operator will be supplied with a new outreach kit shortly after their appointment. For the reasons above, whilst we can’t be certain on timescales for the introduction of an outreach service, we are making progress towards that objective. Any proposal to reintroduce a service will be supported by a period of public consultation. We may take the opportunity to run the consultation concurrently with the works required to introduce the outreach service so that a service can be restored at the earliest opportunity. In closing, I hope that the above is helpful in providing an update on the current situation and in reassuring you and the Council that we remain committed to see Post Office service restored to the village as soon as practically possible. Please come back to me if you have any questions.
Kind regards, Stuart Taylor, External Relations Manager”
DORCHESTER MARATHONWe have been advised that Dorchester Rotary Club will be running their Marathon again this year. It will be held on Sunday 27th May and the route will be the same as last year. This will involve closing the B3142 and B3143 from Snowdrop Corner to the Showground and to Puddletown for a short period in the morning. Further details will be advised.
Planning for the Marathon continues so if there are any concerns please let the Parish Council know so they can be considered. The feed back from those taking part last year was they were appreciative of the support and encouragement received as they passed through your area.
They also need assistance in manning road closures on the route. This would be much appreciated. If anyone is interested in volunteering, could they please let Roger Greet, know by email: [email protected] or telephoning me - 01305 833557, who will pass their details on to the Club member responsible for the “volunteer co-ordination”.

Piddle Valley Losses in The Great War~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4th April 1918Driver Frederick. C. Smith (Piddlehinton)Royal Field ArtilleryFrederick Smith was a Piddlehinton man. His parents, Frederick and Amelia, were married here in October 1874 (she, incidentally, was three years older than her husband) and Frederick was born in April
1877. He served as a driver in the Royal Field Artillery. Field artillery used 18 pounder horse drawn guns and supported the infantry. A driver, the equivalent rank to a private, rode the gun team’s horses. Frederick Smith died on 4th April 1918, but whether from wounds, sickness, accident or natural causes is not recorded. He was 40 years old. He died in this country, and is buried in St. Mary’s churchyard, his home parish.
26th April 1918 Private Edward C. Robbins (Piddlehinton)Dorsetshire RegimentPiddlehinton’s Memorial shows Edward Robbins as being a private in the Dorsetshire Regiment who died on 26th April 1918, but further details of his service cannot be traced. His name does not appear in the official list of soldiers who died serving with the Dorsets, nor is there an E.C. Robbins among the 137 men of that surname who died during the war. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has no record of him. I have even checked the names of the 346 men who were executed. Thankfully he is not among them. Errors and omissions in military records did occur and I suspect that Edward Robbins falls within this category. If anyone knows something about this man please contact me.

Hopefully, like me, you are noticing that the days are slowly getting longer and signs of spring are in evidence despite the freezing cold! I’m looking
forward to British Summer Time on 25th March when the evenings will be longer and I can spend more time outdoors.
At the surgery your first point of contact as a patient will be with our
reception team, all of whom work incredibly hard to provide an outstanding service to you as well as support to the clinical team in delivering their
roles. When you contact the surgery, the reception team may ask various questions to help establish who the most appropriate person is for you to see, how much time might be needed, whether in fact you should call 999, or if it is something that can be sorted out without a face to face appointment. All staff at the surgery are bound by confidentiality and
respect your privacy, but the more information you can give, the easier it is for s to help you.
As usual, the surgery will be closed over the Easter weekend, on Good
Friday (30th March) and Easter Monday (2nd April).
Finally, a follow up reminder to book an appointment to come in to the surgery for your annual long term condition reviews if you are contacted.

Notes From the “Yoga & Sound” Studio – Piddlehinton…
Love & Light by Magdalena Atkinson a new album, a new adventure, new opportunities…
Hello, I feel very blessed to share with you my news about my music and dreams for the future and I am very excited to share with you my new album Love & Light.
I am a Piddle Valley resident singer-songwriter, a mother, a yogini, a dreamer… writing original music inspired by many quests into different traditions, life, people & inner knowing. I am eclectic and love expansion and different styles of music. I am blessed by a voice that shift shapes according to the genre I am performing, it can be very gentle and lyrical or very powerful!
Love & Light captures the transition between the old and the new. The lyrical romance of the past grows into a much stronger, positive and uplifting future. Pre-order the album from my website and get free access to my first single “Willow Tree” captured in beautiful cinematic video recorded at Cerne Abbas in January.
My first album (Beauty & Power) released in 2015 healed in me a deep fear of reaching for my dreams that blocked my writing for 12 years. Love & Light is stronger, captivating, deepening and this is strongest in my live performances where I have started to show more of this new face. Perhaps this is something that you will experience at a live session where I perform my own material and accompany myself on the acoustic guitar, piano and my very special hammered dulcimer.
It has been a very special time getting ready to publish this new project, working on it regularly in Bridport in weekly recording studio sessions. I found that this is the only way I can do it while looking after my family and my daily work as a music therapist. It was during this time that I was struck by the increasing support for all things Dorset and noticed this had not yet reached Dorset music and I felt compelled to give it a voice!
Join me as I create and champion a campaign supporting “Local Music on Local Media” – it feels like a crusade to a faraway land, yet on purpose I am focusing on the local audience in the same way we support local food, local businesses and local initiatives. Why not stretch it further and support local musicians & songwriters? So far people have been very open to the idea and give me lots of advice how to reach those who may share our music on local radio stations… Join us… there are so many talents in Dorset, let’s hear and support them!
www.piddlevalley.info 85
So this is a time to knock on many doors, some have opened already. I have been invited to several local radio stations and you can find me spreading the word whilst doing promotional performances between releasing the first single on March the 2nd and the full release of the Love & Light album later in the year!
The nearest concert of my work will be on Thursday the 8th of March in The Quiet Space in Poundbury, Dorchester at 7.30pm. Tickets are available on my website, I would love to see you.
www.magdalenaatkinson.co.ukor book it by phone 07796656869
I am looking forward to sharing more music with you! If you know about any opportunities or would like to open your home for a HOUSE CONCERT, please be in touch! I will share the music you love most, my lyrical songs, my stronger songs or French Chansons which some of you have heard over the last years in the Piddle Valley. Many samples of what I do are available on my website!

This Month’s Recipe~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dal Bhat Dal, Daal, Dhal or Dahl (there seems no consensus on the spelling)This thick, spiced lentil stew is on every Indian menu in the UK, even though, it is originally from Nepal. Bhaat or Bhat is plain boiled rice.
First, a word about LentilsThey are the dried seeds of a legume variety and are a great source of protein, as well as having meaningful amounts of calcium, phosphorous, iron and vitamin B. They come in an array of colours and sizes.
Basically the Red lentils (always so called, although, they are generally orange!) are the only lentil that is both quick cooking and will practically disintegrate into a mush. They are used for Dal and also sprinkled into soups stews and casseroles to thicken. Add to bolognaise to reduce the quantity of meat but keep the protein level up.
Yellow lentils (Moong Dahl) will break down during cooking but never as completely as red lentils, take a little longer to cook and benefit from a pre soak.
Brown, green and black lentils will all keep their shape after cooking. They have various names, Puy – the French green lentil, beluga, because it looks like caviar and so on, but they are all basically the same and can be used interchangeable in recipes. Use what you have and get more from the shop.
Incidentally, yellow or green split peas are also legumes and can be used, but are a variety of pea grown specifically for drying. The splitting process speeds up the cooking a bit, although they benefit from soaking and will maintain some shape after cooking.
Serves : 4 good portions Ingredients• 150g red lentils • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil• 1 small red onion, chopped small• 2 cloves garlic, crushed• 1 walnut sized piece of ginger – peeled and grated• ½ teaspoon mustard seeds• ½ teaspoon turmeric*• ½ teaspoon cumin seeds*• ½ teaspoon ground coriander*• 2 medium tomatoes, diced• 600mil vegetable stock
www.piddlevalley.info 89
• 2 tablespoons coriander – chopped and/or green spring onion, chopped, for garnish*If you prefer, you can use garam masala mix instead of the turmeric, cumin and coriander.• Optional: For heat red chilli flakes – add in with the tomatoes• Basmati rice – plain boiled
Preparation• Wash the lentils and rinse a couple of times. Drain and set aside• Heat oil on high for a minute • Add onion, ginger, garlic and stir fry on high until the onion is a little brown on
the edges, 1-2 minutes.• Stir in mustard seeds, turmeric, cumin seed and ground coriander. Turn the heat
down to medium and cook for 2 minutes, stirring often. This will cook out the spices.• Add tomatoes. • Stir in the lentils, cover and cook for 2 minutes.• Add stock and bring to the boil. • Stir and then simmer for about 15 – 20 minutes, stirring occasionally especially
towards the end of cooking until the Dal is thickened and the lentils cooked out
ServeSpoon rice into serving bowl and ladle over the Dal. Sprinkle with coriander leaves or diced spring onion. Nepal on a Plate!
Piddle Valley Players’ Show Review SOUTH PACIFIC~~~
It never ceases to amaze how this small Memorial Hall can at a stroke (apparently!) convert into a theatre accommodating some 60 audience, musicians and performers. Its intimacy encourages a great atmosphere, we all feel part of the show. So it was good to walk in from the cold straight to the warmth of this bright, welcoming Pacific Island, suitably decorated.
It helps that many of the audience will have known the show and its characters, allowing each performer to add their own identity to the well-known parts. Fortunately the American and French accents were suitably underplayed and the clarity of the well-known songs owed much to the light touch of the trio of musicians.
For their entrance fee, the audience was treated to 14 well-known songs and the spectacle of wartime bombing and parachuting onto the island – on film! And being served during the interval with very tasty chocolate shrunken heads! Another winner – how do they keep doing this?
