Understanding PIE CHARTS

• Pie charts are perhaps the most ubiquitouschart type; they can be found innewspapers, business reports, and manyother places. But few people actuallyunderstand the function of the pie chartand how to use it properly. In addition toissues stemming from using too manycategories, the biggest problem is gettingthe basic premise: that the pie slices sumup to a meaningful whole.

How to Read Pie Charts?

• There are two features that let us read thevalues on a pie chart:

-the angle a slice covers (compared to thefull circle)

-the area of a slice (compared to theentire disk).

How to Read Pie Charts?

• Research suggests that we look at the angle inthe center, essentially reducing the chart tojust the crossing lines there. We are not verygood at measuring angles, but we recognize90 and 180 degree angles with very highprecision. Slices that cover half or a quarter ofthe circle will therefore stand out. Others canbe compared with some success, but readingactual numbers from a pie chart is next toimpossible.

When to Use Pie Charts?

“There are some simple criteria that you can use todetermine whether a pie chart is the right choice foryour data.”

• Do the parts make up a meaningful whole? If not, use a different chart. Only use a pie chart if you can define the

entire set in a way that makes sense to the viewer.

• Are the parts mutually exclusive? If there is overlap between the parts, use a different chart.

• Do you want to compare the parts to each other or theparts to the whole? If the main purpose is to compare between the parts, use a differentchart. The main purpose of the pie chart is to show part-wholerelationships.

• How many parts do you have?If there are more than five to seven, use a different chart. Pie charts withlots of slices (or slices of very different size) are hard to read.

• In all other cases, do not use a pie chart. The pie chart is the wrong charttype to use as a default; the bar chart is a much better choice for that.Using a pie chart requires a lot more thought, care, and awareness of itslimitations than most other charts.

When to Use Pie Charts?

BEFORE TAKING THE TEST TAKENOTE THAT THERE ARE 300

ROSES ALL TOGETHER.

GOODLUCK

• 4. WHAT IS THE TOTAL AVERAGE OF THE ROSES?

QUIZ PROPER

1. (It depends)

2.How many percent of roses are

ORANGE?

ans. 100%-40%-25%-12%-10%=13%

Therefore there are 13% of ORANGE roses.

ANSWERS

3. What is the ratio of the number of WHITE roses to the number of

RED roses?

10% OF ROSES ARE WHITE.

10/100 X 300 = 30There are 30 WHITE roses.

40% of roses are RED.40/100 x 300 = 120There are 120 RED roses.

Ratio 30:120 = 1:4
