Local Farms, Global Issues

As you tour these beautiful small farms, we encourage you to think about the bigger picture, too. Here are some issues to keep in mind.

One teaspoon of rich soil can contain 50 billion organisms. This is why our farmers take such care with composts and mulches, and avoid harmful chemicals. Soil is a complex living system.

Pesticides have been linked to a wide range of human health hazards. Rather than the synthetic pesticides and chemicals often used by conven-tional growers, organic farmers use insect traps, careful crop selection, disease-resistant varieties, predator insects or beneficial microorganisms to control crop-damaging pests.

or nearly 30 years, Weaver Street Market has been a strong supporter of local

local food ourselves, and providing consumers with a window into the cornucopia of local food choices. Co-ops like Weaver Street show that businesses can be economically viable while pursuing social responsibility and environmental stewardship. The

co-op model is a growing alternative that addresses many of the excesses of big

businesses.Working together, consumers and farmers have enormous power to shape our food system. Each purchase of locally grown food

contributes directly to the health of our local farms and moves us closer to a

vibrant local food system.

family farms. As a local, community-owned business ourselves, we’ve fostered a close, personal relationship with many of the farm-ers on this farm tour. Our stores in Carrboro, Southern Village and Hillsborough have the largest selection of local produce, meats, dairy products, and baked goods in the Triangle.Weaver Street Market sup-ports the local food movement by partnering with local farmers and food producers, producing delicious

dig deeper? The best way to get to know your food is to go see for yourself. Food you can trust starts at the source - with the farmer. These farmers are proud of how they grow and are excited to show you their farms. It’s our mission to create a regional food system that is good for consumers, good for farmers and farmworkers, and good for the land. And, we’ve been opening the barn doors and farm gates on the Piedmont Farm Tour for over 20 years to show you how our farmers do it. A farm visit not only helps you under-stand where your food comes from, it encourages our amazing, local farmers. Most farms on the tour sell fresh-as-it-gets local produce, delicious meats, cheese, and other farm-fresh products. Don’t forget to take your cooler! Let us know what you discover! Post your best farm tour pics to #piedmontfarmtour.

Who is CFSA? CFSA is on a mission to bring local, organic food to your table from a farmer who shares your values.CFSA Helps Family Farms Thrive• CFSA educates our community about sustainable farming. We train farmers and give them the tools they need to grow organically. Our farm tours introduce you

to your farmers.• CFSA helps create vibrant and sustain-

able local food systems throughout the Carolinas. We support farmers with free technical consulting services to help them get certified organic, implement conservation practices,

and make their farms more profitable and sustainable. We foster collaborative

efforts to expand the storage, processing, distribution, and marketing of local, organic crops.

This develops new businesses that provide jobs and increases access to local, organic foods.• CFSA advocates for fair farm policies. We are level-ing the playing field to ensure that sustainable, family farms can succeed through local leadership develop-ment and state and federal advocacy.

Raising livestock on pasture is health-ier for the animals, produces meat that is higher in healthy fats, and values responsible animal welfare. Pastured meats are a win-win-win.

We encourage you to stay in-formed and get active on these important issues. Join us in our mission to bring you food you can trust from farmers in our community. Our farmers, our communities and our health depend on it.

For timely information and to make a real difference for farms and food, become a member of CFSA and get our e-news updates. www.carolinafarmstewards.org

TIPS for taking the TOURMany folks comment that there just isn’t time to visit all of the farms that they want to see. We have organized the tour in a way that will hopefully make your experience as fruitful as possible.

Here are some helpful hints:You will only be able to visit 3 to 4 farms a day . . . By the time you factor in driving and actually touring the farm, you’ll need to budget about 1 hour to 1.5 hours for each farm. Remember, maps are not to scale!

You can see more farms if you stick to one region of the tour . . . You’ll notice that the tour is divided into 3 regions – north, central, and south, with a corresponding map for each region. You may want to pick 3 to 4 favorites in each region and focus on a single region each day.

DURHAM: Durham Farmers’ Market
