OPERATING: MOÇAMBIQUE CHIRIDZI SAFARIS LIMITED IN TETE PROVINCE

Introduction

Piet with client JP Richard and 47" buffalo in Mocambique.

Moçambique has become a very popular hunting destination for overseas clients over the past 26 years since I re-opened safari hunting with the first company in 1988. It has grown into a multimillion dollar industry with hunting concessions in nearly all the provinces throughout the country.

Most popular species are available and generally good quality trophies are being taken all around. The government has just introduced new strict anti-poaching laws which will greatly improve the situation.

There also seems to be finally a truce between the political parties which should now see long lasting peace and stability. It appears with all these new developments MoÇambique can only flourish and go from strength to strength not only as a hunting country but the whole economy in general.

General Information Bungue concession is a vast area of approximately 500,000 acres. It is located in Tete Province. It borders Lake Cahorra Bassa on the lakes southeastern shore. Bungue’s south end borders Zimbabwe. There is a very nice lodge on the lake. It has indoor tiled bathrooms and comfortable bedrooms with a separate wing for the clients. There is a tented bush camp halfway into the concession. Both lodge and camp have hot showers, flush toilets, dining, bar, and campfire areas. Laundry is done on a daily basis. Ice and cold beverages are available with beers, wines and spirits included in the quoted daily rate. Preferred drinks such as special whiskeys should be brought with by the guests.

HuntingTravel by bush road is done with 4-wheel-drive vehicles. In addition power boats are available for hunting along the lake. Clients should be reasonably fit, as buffalo average over an hour by foot to locate once spoor is found by vehicle or boat. Elephant hunting, especially, requires clients to be in good physical condition. There are good tuskers in the areas but due to some rough terrain it can be quite demanding to get a big one. A person prepared to put in the hard yards will normally be rewarded.

Climate

HealthA well-stocked medicine chest is in each camp and each vehicle carries a large first-aid box. Clients should start anti-malarial medication well in advance of departure for Africa. Individual prescription medicine should be brought from a client’s home country. A second pair of prescription glasses / contact lenses for clients using them is a good precaution.

Great 89 pound elephant taken in Mocambique.

Terrain, Clothing and EquipmentTerrain varies between Mopane Woodlands, thick bush (Jesse), riverine forest, lake shoreline, flood plains and sporadic open plateau. There are several mountain ranges, some being very open and others densely covered with vegetation. Numerous pans and springs exist and rivers run throughout the concessions. Tsetse flies are encountered in many areas.

Rifles should be mainly in heavier calibres, as we specialize in hunting dangerous game, which is often encountered in thick bush.

.375 is the minimum recommended for elephant, buffalo and lion..30-06 is the minimum recommended for leopard..270 is the minimum recommended for antelope.

We need all rifle details: serial no, calibre and make with quantity and type of ammunition at least 6 weeks before the hunt to arrange permits.Clothing should be tan, khaki, and green or otherwise neutral colored, with wide brimmed hat, essential in the hot weather. Jackets are a must in the early part of the season. Well broken-in footwear is essential, as walking can become necessary at any time. Insect repellent is vital, as mosquitoes are evident, especially along the lake shore. A full check list of everything needed can be supplied.

Animals AvailableElephant, Cape buffalo, lion, leopard, crocodile, hippopotamus, hyena, kudu, sable, waterbuck, bushbuck, impala, warthog, bushpig, duiker, grysbok, baboon. (The quota is limited so animals are given on a first come first serve basis). Bow hunting is legal in Moçambique and we offer these on a special arrangement basis.

Client CapacityOur camps are designed to take 4 people. We prefer to have one hunting party per camp, especially for elephant and cats. We will take two hunting parties in one camp for buffalo only and 2 parties for crocodile and hippo hunts.

Huge 15’10” crocodile - Mocambique.

Magnificent lion shot in Mocambique.

Dr. George Bridges with a beautiful leopard taken in Mocambique.

Another huge Buffalo(46”) taken by a client hunting with Professional Hunter Piet Hougaard in Mocambique.

Excellent chobe bushbuck - Mocambique.

The weather is generally comfortable from April through July, with evenings sometimes chilly (leather gloves and scarves in the morning are necessary). August, September and October brings the height of the dry season and can be hot, especially at mid-day and even at night.

Very good hippo bull - Mocambique.

16lb tiger fish - Lake Cahora Bassa, Mocambique.
