Coach Jeff Lee is enter-ing his 10th year at the helm of the Dawson County Tigers.

He said that this could be the team’s best year yet.

The Tigers will return 21 seniors on a team that went 5-5 last season. Lee said it has been since 2005 that the team has posted a better than .500 record. That year the Tigers went 7-3.

Dawson County has been working hard at the little things during the off season to make them bet-ter. The team looked sharp in its final pre-season inter-squad scrim-mage Aug. 10.

The team also lined up in a preseason scrimmage game against Towns County last Friday night. Details were unavailable as of press time.

In region play, gone are Union and Rabun coun-ties. The Tigers enter Region 7-AAA this year. Dawson County will pick up region opponents Buford , Nor th Hal l , White County and West Hall.

Dawson’s non-region games will be against rivals Lumpkin County, N o r t h Fo r s y t h a n d Forsyth Central.

“Our schedule is very challenging,” Lee said. “We open with a very important region home game with East Hall. After that we play three consecutive games with larger schools in our area. Lumpkin County on the road, North Forsyth will

be here and then at Forsyth Central. All will be a big challenge and very large crowds to play in front of. So those games hopefully will pre-pare us for the remainder of our region schedule.”

On offense, the Tigers seem to be ahead of where they were last sea-son.

“We have more team speed than before, a vet-eran offensive line, expe-rience at both running back positions and wide receiver. As we have our base offense in, we will begin to install more screens and passing con-cepts,” Lee said.

Defensively, the team will be led by new defen-sive coordinator Jed Lacey.

“We are playing with more of a sense of urgen-cy than in years past. Overall, Coach Lacey has installed a sense of pride in that unit. We expect to cause more turnovers this season, as that has been a source of concentration,” Lee said.

Staying healthy will be a key to this season. Lee reports that there are no major injuries to begin the season.

“We need to s tay

healthy in the practices and scrimmages leading up to East Hall,” he said.

The offense will be run by quarterback Tyler Dominy.

D o m i ny h a s b e e n selected as a preseason Elite 11 player by The Times of Gainesville.

Dominy will be under center for his fourth con-secutive year.

“We will be able to do a lot of things offensively because of his ability. Tyler has a very big arm and a very good football mind,” Lee said.

Backing up Dominy will be junior Jackson Putnam and sophomore Zack Buchan.

“Both are very capable of playing when called upon,” Lee said.

The Tigers have a wealth of talent at run-ning back, starting with fullback Zack Martin.

Martin is coming off a tremendous junior season. He is a bull in the back-fie ld who plays old school. The senior would rather run over an oppos-ing defender than run around him, according to Lee.

“Zach brings a very physical style of running

that a lot of defenses do not like,” Lee said.

Also at fullback are several players that can fill in for Martin. Both Cody Smith and Cody Lamar bring a different style of running.

In Dawson’s base offense the team will use two half-backs. The position will be handled by several players. Will Anglin, Chris Sayler, Mitch Putnam, Keaton Toal, Zach Guy and Lane Venters will share time at the spot.

The wide receiver corps is returning several players that had big seasons last year.

Led by all-purpose Tiger Bruce Clark, the team is loaded at the position.

“Bruce gives us a big pres-ence on the perimeter,” Lee said. “During the offseason Bruce has improved h i s speed, which will make him an even bigger threat for us.”

Mitch Putnam, Will Anglin, Chris Sayler and Jackson Putnam will allow Dawson County to spread the field with five wide receivers if

necessary. Dawson will have two very

good tight ends in Logan Hayes and first year player Colton Chester.

The offensive line will be anchored by Eli Brown at center.

Brown’s back up will be Harley Vaughan.

Vaughan, Kaine Barnes, Isaac Rice, Matt Hammond, Levi Samples, Jacob Wilkie, Justin King and Tristan Reed should all see playing time at tackle.

At guard, Chase Wilson, Mason Bennett, Trent White, Matt Hammond, Cole Smith and Corbin Thomas should see some playing time.

Handling the kicking duties will be Max Muldoon as the place kicker and kick off man.

Right now, Colton Chester is manning the punting posi-tion, according to Lee.

The team has two very good long snappers in both Clark and Hammond.

With the offense scoring at

will, the Tiger defense, led by coach Jed Lacey, must do its part this season.

Lacey will instill a sense of determination and pride in the unit.

“We will be very aggressive with our style of play,” Lee said.

The Tiger defensive line w i l l c o n s i s t o f : B l a k e McDan ie l , Ca le Ta l l an t ,

Brandon Tenor io , Hayes , C o l e Wa t e r s , C h r i s t i a n H e b e r t , Va u g h a n a n d Hammond.

Linebackers will be one of the strengths of the defense, and wil l be led by Cody Smith, Zach Martin, Corey Voyles and JP King on the inside.

At outside linebacker are

Keaton Toal, Scotty Zadernak and Cole Knight.

Dawson’s secondary will consist of J. Putnam, Anglin, M. Putnam, Sayler, Guy, Venters, Clark and Brandon Seay.

“It should be a very excit-ing season of high school football in Dawsonville,” Lee said.

The Dawson County Middle School football team used early morning sessions to prepare for the 2012 season.

The Tigers had numerous 6:30 a.m. practices in order to beat the heat.

“Practicing early has really worked for us,” said head coach Thomy Edwards.

The season marks the third that Edwards has been the head coach of the team.

Edwards has been coaching and teach-ing at the school for four years.

Assistant coaches will be Frank Brown and Steven Moates on defense and Russell Burt on offense.

“We have a great coaching staff,” Edwards said.

Dawson County is coming off a disap-pointing 2-4 record last season.

Edwards’ team will concentrate on fin-ishing games this season.

“Last year there was a couple ball games that we were winning, or only down a touchdown, in the last quarter but

ended up falling short of the win. We hope to change that this year,” Edwards said.

On offense the Tigers are working on running the wishbone.

“We are going to try to be a ball controlling offensive. Nothing flashy,

just some old school smash-mouth foot-ball,” he said.

Defensively the team will employ a 4-4 scheme.

“We are working on not quitting until you hear the whistle. We want all 11 play-ers on the field to run to the football,” Edwards said.

The team’s quarterback this season will be Colin Glover.

Joining Glover in the backfield will be running backs; Jordan Hannah, Hunter Burt, Taylor Cronan, Rusty Chester, Caine Wells and Jeremy Whalen.

“As you can see we have a hand full of

“We must get consistent play from last season’s returning players Hunter LeBaron, Hunter Burt, Rusty Chester, Colin Glover and Jordan Hannah for us to be successful,” Edwards said. “I expect my players to always go 100 percent and win the games that are close.”

Riverview Middle School began foot-ball practice under first year head coach Benjy Edwards recently.

Edwards had been an assistant coach for four years prior to taking the head position this spring.

Edwards will be assisted by Phil Branson and Jeremy Smith. Both Branson and Smith coached at Riverview last sea-son.

“We have a great bunch of kids that have a very good work ethic,” Edwards said. “They are excited about the season and work hard every day at practice.”

There is lots of room for improvement on both offense and defense for the Eagles, according to Edwards.

Last season the team scored only two touchdowns on offense. The Eagles were 0-5 last season.

There is loads of competition at the quarterback position this year, according

to Edwards.Three different players

are vying for the posi-t ion: Hunter Ramey, E va n J e n n i n g s a n d Cullen Reed.

“There is a real battle going on for quarterback. All three boys are pretty good,” Edwards said.

Reed is a seventh grader, while Jennings and Ramey are eighth graders.

“We have several backs that carry the ball well and have some great speed. We will try to utilize their speed by trying to get them in the open field,” Edwards said.

Backs fighting for playing time are: Trey Dixon, Phillip Pinion, Tim Moody, Jacob Adams, Dustin Ray and Connor Bearden.

The offensive line will be anchored by Dawson Dominy at center, according to Edwards.

There are several players looking to win starting positions. Edwards and his staff must decide upon Taylor Swofford, Casey Passmore, Dominy, Karson Pharris, Jack Pharris, and Keelan Kraus on the line.

At the tight end position, Edwards expects b ig th ings f rom Barry Thurmond.

“He is a smart football player with great ability. He has some of the best hands on the team, but also gets his job

done when it comes to making a block,” he said.

Riverview wil l show mult iple schemes on defense. The Eagles have been practicing several different fronts.

“In the past we have ran a 4-4 look, but this year we are looking at a 5-3,” he said.

There are still a lot of decisions to make on defense.

“I expect our defensive players to flow to the ball and make tackles,” Edwards said.

Riverview will play cross-county rival Dawson Middle on Saturday to open the season.

Kick-off time had not been set as of press time.
