With Our Thanks

Words cannot adequately express our thanks to those who supported us through our loss of Kathy - Beloved Wife, Sweetest Mama, and Most Loved Nan, Grandma and Nana.

To all whose hugs and kind words made this journey just a little more bearable:

To all those who made sure we were fed; the food was delicious:

To all those who sent flowers, cards, condolences, and donated to Rotel and the Kidney Foundation:

To those who helped financially during our stay in Ottawa and again at home:

To those who visited Kathy in Ottawa and made her face light up when they appeared from around the curtain and in the doorway:

To Chris for driving the boys to Ottawa when it was needed:

To Kim and Budgie for recording the bingo win like she asked - she loved it;

To Mike, Jim, Glenn, Ray and Stash for clearing our driveways and walkways:

To Judy Ellis for your beautiful voice in church singing and reading:

To Robb, Jared, Brad, Greg, Michael and Steven for carrying her:

To Chantelle - just so many things:

To Sherry and Kathy for being there:

To Rocky, Sonny and Clem for your continued support of Alex:

To Jeff - you were there with us through it all and did everything possible to make it easier for us:

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love and kindnesses are immeasurable.

We’ll never forget them.

Her illness was short - just a few weeks - but she left behind a lifetime of memories that we’ll always

cherish.

We’ll grieve her loss forever.

from your Diabetic Care Navigator

What are your new year resolutions and are you

committing yourself to them?

I would like to start a diabetes support program for the community. This would include monthly meetings at the health building. We will discuss our goals for the year in relation to our health and wellness and discuss strategies to help us reach them. There will be teaching points each month on various topics in relation to diabetes. This is not only for those community members with diabetes. It is also for those who want to avoid the disease.

Haven’t made any resolutions yet? Here are a few ideas…

• Lose some weight to help manage blood sugars • Experiment more in the kitchen with healthier

foods • Get more physically active • Manage your stressors in a healthier way • Become more informed about diabetes

Space for the support group is limited as I will cap attendance at 12 participants. If there is more

interest, I will open up a second group. I will provide healthy treats and refreshments for each meeting as

well as some free giveaways. Meetings will be held the first Tuesday of every month at 10am in the downstairs

boardroom of the health building.

First meeting will be Tuesday February 4th at 10am.

Please call the Diabetic Care Navigator, Natalie to reserve your attendance at 613-625-2259 ext. 233

TALKING ABOUT CANCER

How can you help someone with cancer:

• Listen first • Don’t worry that you will say the wrong thing • Learn about the type of cancer your friend has • Make sure the time is right for you to visit • Let your friend be sad • Be specific when you offer help • There are lots of practical ways to help • Don’t forget that the caregivers need help too • Maybe bring a small gift • Keep offering supports after others stop • Understand that every diagnosis is unique You simply cannot predict how they are feeling, or know what they are going through.

Respect your friend’s moods and how they choose to cope.

Lets End the Stigma

Recovery and Healing

We are all on a journey of learning. Recently my learning journey brought me to Omàmiwininì Pimàdjwowin (Algonquin Way Cultural Centre). Willy and I discussed some meaning o f words that has he lped me look a t Recovery and Healing in a new way. As we have discussed, recovery is a process of becoming well. Here are some translated words that align well with that process of learning and journey of becoming well. I love how the Algonquin language describes the ideas explored in these articles and can increase appreciation for understanding.

PROBLEM GAMBLING

It is not just about losing money; it can affect a person’s whole life.

Not all people who gamble excessively are alike, nor are the problems they face.

Gambling problems share many similarities with other addictive disorders. However, there are no visible signs or physi-cal changes that will indicate a gambling problem.

There are many reasons why a gambling problem may devel-op. For example, some people develop problems when they try to win back money they have lost or because they like to be “in the action.” Others have many life stresses and consider gambling a welcome relief.

Counselling can help people understand why they gamble, so they can stop, cut down or change their gambling. It can also help repair hurt feelings and regain trust with family members.

Counselling is a place to talk about what is happening in your life. It is safe and private, and you won't be judged. You decide with your counsellor how often you want help and what to talk about.

There is no shame in seeking help. It is the first step to

regaining control of gambling and other problems.

If your life has been affected by gambling check out these resources or come and talk with me.
