WORLD’S STEEPEST COGWHEEL RAILWAYFor many people engineer Eduard Locher was crazy when he put forward the idea of building a railway up to Mount Pilatus in the 19th century. But the 4618 m long stretch of railway wasopened in 1889 (steam operation until 1937) and with its 48 %gradient is still the steepest cogwheel railway in the world. This was achieved by the brilliantly innovative constructionof two horizontally revolving cogwheels.

MYTHS & LEGENDSFrom time immemorial, the rugged cliffs high above Lucerne have been shrouded in mysterious myths and legends. Peo-ple in the Middle Ages believed that a dragon with heal-ing powers and spirits inhabited the rocky crevices. It was also said that the ancient Lake Pilatus harbored the restless soul of none other than the Roman Prefect, Pontius Pilate – now at peace. That explains why ascents of the Pilatus were forbidden for a very long time. Cursed be they, it was thought, who disturb the Pilatus!
