Shirley and I continue to meet new people. I hope we will

have more opportunities to get to know each during the time

we will be here. I am in the office on Tuesdays and

Wednesdays, almost all day. Come by and we will put on

the coffee pot (I drink tea). Perhaps you should call first. I go

for a walk every now and then. I have been looking around

a little bit in the community and wonder how the church

might best reach out to the people living close by. This is

such a beautiful building filled with such wonderful people it

seems a shame we cannot share more of who we are. Let’s

pray about it.

I am planning to keep considering the gospel of Luke on

Sunday mornings. We are doing the same in the Bible Study

on Tuesday in the early evening. The Bible Study begins

with the passage that becomes our scripture reading for

Sunday. It is amazing what comes from that study and finds

its way into the sermon for Sunday morning.

LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH, AND LET IT BEGIN WITH ME

There are several weeks before the beginning of Lent this year. Easter is late, as late as it can be. I

prefer it that way because it allows for several Sundays between the two major events in the

church year.

I am thankful for all the people who are helping to make this interim period a good one in the life

of the church.

The New Year brings many challenges for our congregation as we continue our search for our new Senior Minister and prepare for all of our church projects. We are fortunate to have Dr. Linden at the pulpit during the interim. He has been well received by our congregation. The Diaconate Board has established the active membership at approximately 150. Of this number about 89 members are present in church on a regular basis. This is a decrease in the membership of 450 previously established and reported to the NACCC. Our contribution level to the National Association is based on this number. We are now giving our fair share to the NACCC. The Diaconate Board has been working on this project for three years. Last year we sent out letters to over 300

families that are currently on the contact lists available in the Church office. Approximately 130 responses were received. Using the information gathered and review of the contact lists from the office the active membership has been amended by the Diaconate board to reflex the current active membership for our Church. Our Twilight Bible Study continues to grow in numbers. We meet in Dr. Linden’s office which offers a friendlier atmosphere. We are currently studying the Book of Luke. The Auxiliary Meeting on February 5 will be centered on the organization of our upcoming Rummage Sale so plan to attend. The success of our sale depends on our participation. The Christian Board of Education is working hard to raise money to send some of our youth to the NAPF and HOPE. We can help this cause by attending the fundraisers throughout the year. Please remember to wear your name badges whenever possible as Dr. Linden and Shirley continue to learn our names. There have been several new faces at Sunday morning worship. Please extend a warm welcome to newcomers. I would like to recognize our wonderful office staff as they continue to support all of the Church functions. They are doing a wonderful job. Remember to keep them informed on all activities that are going on at our Church. Until next time, “Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let it begin with me”.

Despite the fact that after the holidays publishers dial back their production, we still have new books available. We will meet towards the end of the month, but meanwhile there are new titles by favorite fiction authors: Mitch Albom, Jeffrey Archer, David Baldacci, Lee Child, An-nie LaMott, James Patterson, and Louise Penny. In non-fiction we have the best seller Be-coming by Michele Obama.

“PLAYING A TRUMPET FOR OVER FIVE DECADES HAS AFFORDED ME OPPORTUNIIES TO BE PART OF A BUNCH OF BANDS & ORCHESTRAS FROM GRADE SCHOOL THRU COLLEGE. THINKING BACK I RECALL QUITE WELL HOW AWFUL WE SOUNDED AS A GROUP AT THE BEGINNING OF EACH YEAR. CLARINETS WOULD SQUEAK, ALL MATTER OF HORNS WOULD SQUAWK, PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS’ MISADVENTURES ADDING TO THE CHAOS. EVENTUALLY. WE BEGAN TO UNDERSTAND AND HEAR THE MUSIC BETTER, WITH EACH ONE OF US DEVELOPING AN INCREASED AWARENESS AS TO OUR INDIVIDUAL ROLES WHILE PERFORMING THE MUSIC. WHEN WE CAME TOGETHER WITH SOME BEAUTIFUL MUSIC. HARD TO BELIEVE BUT 2018 IS NOW IN OUR REAR-VIEW MIRROR. WHAT WILL 2019 BRING FOR OUR CHURCH? BOTH BLESSINGS AND CHALLENGES, NO DOUBT, AS BOTH ARE PART OF LIFE’S JOURNEY. WE ARE A BAND OF GOD’S PEOPLE IN OUR CHURCH, EACH WITH A “PART” TO PLAY. WHICH PART IS YOURS? WHAT INSTRUMENT DO YOU PLAY? DO YOU PRAY? TEACH? SING? PREACH? SERVE ON A CHURCH TEAM? HELP IN THE KITCHEN? OFFER ENCOURAGING WORDS? OH MY, THERE ARE SO MANY INSTRUMENTS TO PLAY IN OUR CHURCH “BAND.” EACH ONE NEEDED TO BE PART OF THE GROUP-WECANNOT DO IT WITHOUT YOU. PLAN TO DO AS MUCH AS YOU CAN IN 2019 AS WE GATHER TOGETHER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF OUR CONDUCTOR. JESUS CHRIST. LET’S CREATE SOME BEAUTIFUL MUSIC TOGETHER!”

The organ we hear every Sunday in the Pilgrim sanctuary has a rich and long tradition. On Sunday February 17th you will hear the abundant range of our organ’s resources with music from Bach to Queen, played by our current organist, Bruce Jones. Some of this offering was written for

the organ and some was written for jazz clubs, rock venues and Broadway, but all have been translated to be heard on our Bravura organ. You recognize the names of Bach, Buxtehude, Brubeck, Mozart and Samuel Barber but…wait! Some of these guys never wrote for the pipe organ! Precisely my point. Neither did Richard Deacon (Queen’s Bass player) but you’re going to hear them all starting at 3:00 on Sunday the 17th. Louis Vierne, Eugene Gigout and Cesar Franck (whose hands reached an octave and a fifth!) were among the great early 20th century French organ-

ists whose music will also be sampled. And how could Buxtehude, Brubeck and Bernstein collaborate on a piece of music when they never even lived in the same centuries? All will be revealed Sunday the 17th.

Bach had twenty children, ten of whom lived to become adults. Three of his sons were remembered as composers and performers themselves but did he really have one named Ersatz? Come find out.

Did you know Mozart wrote a set of variations on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star? But he wrote it for piano. And he left some variations out but we have found them and they have all been transformed to be heard on the organ.

How many notes can an organist play at one time with only their feet? I don’t know the record but you will hear a set of variations for the pedal that has four-note chords. Look, Ma! No hands!

Bruce has invited The Ihmsen Trio (oboe, bassoon and piano) to share the second part of the program. Morriss Anderson IV (oboe) and Dr. Gerald Radlauer (bassoon) will join Bruce in presenting the famous Francois Poulenc Trio pour piano, hautbois et bassoon as well as a remarkable new composition by Alyssa Morriss, Up and Away, a musical depiction of the life of a balloon. This was published in 2014 and you have likely never heard of it. Yet. The trio will be joined for this piece by a brave red balloon, whose solo ends the piece. The trio is seen here in their famous reverse Oreo concert attire at a recent performance. Their music is quite serious but they are not.

This performance is presented by the Pilgrim Music Committee free of charge but you are invited to share in the free will offering, for which Bruce will play an Offertory.

FACILITY USE

February 16, 2019 Private Party Noon to 5:00 p.m.

REMEMBRANCE

If you know someone who would love to receive a card or note from the Women’s Auxiliary; please call or email submitting their name, address and telephone number. We believe in no one being left out, it’s always nice to receive a note “Just Because”. You can contact me, Sharla Wickman, [email protected] or at 909-374-9220.

FACILITY USE

When coming to the church, please remember to check in AND out with the office staff. This is extremely

important in case of an emergency because if no one knows you are here, no one can look for you. It is also

important so that you can know whether or not rooms are being rented by others. Renting our facility to

others brings us much needed income. We want our guests to continue to come back to our facility, so we

need to be respectful of their space. We are asking all ministries to contact the church office and submit a

list of everyone who has keys to the church. We must keep and maintain an updated list for our insurance

purposes. Please contact us right away.

Please keep in mind if you are planning to meet at the church, check with BaLinda first to confirm the space

you want is available.

Following these procedures would be very much appreciated.

The Pilgrim Points System is up and running and the Pilgrim Point Store is open for business!

What are Pilgrim Points? Pilgrim Point System is meant to reward our youth for good choices and

deeds as well as encourage them to interact with other members of the

congregation & community.

Actions that earn them points include attending Sunday School,

Bringing their Bible to Sunday School, bringing a friend, participating in

events, doing a good deed or completing service hours with no complaints.

The points themselves are small cards that list their value

and how they were earned.

The Pilgrim Points can be used at the Pilgrim Points store where there are

items of interest for kids of all ages from Nursery through High School and

have a value of 1pt to 100pts The store is currently very well stocked

thanks to very generous donations. We will be grateful for any donations of

items or $5 or $10 gift cards to Game Stop, Barnes & Noble or 5 Below.

There are opportunities for the congregation to get involved.

If you see a youth being particularly helpful or doing a good deed please let

Sarah or Patrick know so they can be encouraged for

good choices and good deeds.
