Pilot Pilot Pilot Pilot your our our our life ife ife ife Welcome to issue no. 14 of Pilot your life. August 2010 On my flight around the coast of Australia, Oz Flight ’99, I made many mistakes. Some were due to lack of experience, others due to various circumstances and lack of confidence. In some cases I made mountains out of mole hills. Each day meant new terrain, different weather conditions and wondering what the airstrips, accommodation, people etc. would be like at the end of the day. My imagination made it worse than what it was, but then that’s true for a lot of us. How many times have we anticipated the worst and it’s never happened? We just need to let go and enjoy the moment. I was told that the weather along the west coast of Tasmania can be quite horrific and that’s what I expected to happen to me, but on the day that we flew from Smithton to Hobart, there was a 42 knot tailwind, not a headwind for a change. After flying into Port Davey (left photo) and rounding the South West Cape, we headed along the coast and flew up part of the Huon Valley past orchards and fish farms (right photo). A quick landing and take off on Bruny Island (below)

Pilot Pilot Pilot Pilot yyyyour our our our llllife ife ife ife was followed by the flight up the Derwent River, with Hobart city on the left, Mount Wellington in the distance and the Tasman Bridge ahead of us.

I would have loved to have flown under the bridge, between the big pylons in the middle, but that’s quite illegal – definitely only in my dreams! The landing at Hobart International Airport capped off a fabulous flying day. Not blue skies, but cloud-covered and quite humid past some of the most remote, breathtaking scenery in Australia. Definitely not the outcome that I had expected. Certainly prepare for the worst, with thorough planning and preparation, hope for the best, with an optimistic outlook, but keep everything in perspective, without magnifying it out of all proportion.

So, another great tip for how to pilot your life (personal or business) is: Don’t make mountains out of mole hills. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best and keep everything in perspective. Two of my presentation topics are:

Overcoming procrastination Turning negatives into positives
