Was ist Alpha-Porting?
Alpha-Porting ist die Trennung von Überschussrendite (Alpha) und Marktrendite (Beta).
Zur Erinnerung, diese Konzepte entstammen der Regressionsanalyse:

wo rp(t) = Portfoliorendite in Perioden t = 1,2, ... T
rm(t) = Marktrendite
p(t) = Residuum
Alpha-Porting kombiniert Alpha-generierende Strategien mit verschiedenen Marktrenditen.
Alpha kann mit Hilfe von synthetischen Beta-Overlay-Strategien mit vielen Assetklassen kombiniert werden.

Beta muss replizierbar sein
Obwohl das Konzept verlockend ist, ist die Beta-Implementierung nicht immer einfach.
Herausforderung:
– Opportunitätskosten: Untergewichtung von überteuerten Wertpapieren wie bei aktivem Ansatz nicht möglich;
– Transaktionskosten durch aktives Management einer konstanten Duration oder Equity Delta um das Portfolio mit dem Beta auszubalancieren;
– Zeitweise bilden Derivate Benchmarks nicht 1 zu 1 ab (Vorteil bei grossen liquiden Indizes mit breiter Investorenbasis);
– Management der impliziten Finanzierungsrate des Beta (z.B. bei Leverage);
– Futures – Expertise und Infrastruktur (Kosten) zum Handling von Margin Flows;
– Swaps - Rechtliches Risiko & Kontrahentenrisiko.

Conclusion
Alpha Porting Strategien helfen bei der Portfoliodiversifizierung und dem Erreichen absolut attraktiver Renditen. Der Investor kann sich auf die Suche nach dem Alpha-Manager konzentrieren, unabhängig von der Asset-Klasse.
Alphas sind selten pur und nicht immer konstant
Beta gibt es nicht umsonst, insbesondere bei der Erschließung weniger liquider Asset-Klassen.
Der Manager einer solchen Strategie sollte
– ein erfolgreicher Alpha Manager sein;
– geeignete Beta-Kandidaten finden können; und
– die Expertise haben die Strategien zu implementieren.
