INTRODUCTION

In todays world, where physical appearance plays a major role in everyones life, people

are more conscious on how they look and appear. The slightest imperfection may give big

impact to an individual and acne or also known as acne vulgaris, is one of the most common

problems occurring especially among teenagers and adults.

Though people perception towards pimple may be different, indirectly, appearance of

pimple can affect ones self esteem, mainly teenagers. During this phase of life, teenagers are

facing puberty which tends to aggravate this condition. Factors such as hormonal changes, diet,

life style and sanitation are the reasons for pimple formation to occur.

Based on the research done among teenagers and young adult, pimple problem does

affect their confidence in turn influence their participation in social relations. Some may not be

bothered over it because the pimple only comes once in a while but for those who are having

serious pimple eruption, this condition initiate low self-esteem, shyness and insecurity.

Basically, there are many methods can be used to treat pimple problem. One therapy is

by using commercial pimple cream or those medicines prescribed by the doctor, examples oral

and topical medicines. Commercial pimple creams are the topical drug that can be easily

obtained from the pharmacy or retail shop which has specified dosage and instruction for

application. In addition to that, most of the commercial pimple creams are safe to use without

doctors prescription and monitoring. They are commonly used for minimal and normal pimple

problems which are most of the time controllable.

On the other hand, for those who are facing severe acne vulgaris and do not respond to

the commercial brands, they require prescribed medications from the doctor to manage and

overcome this problem. The therapy generally includes oral drugs such as anti-microbial or anti-

fungal agents e.g. Tetracycline, Clindamycin and medicated pimple cream with higher doses.

Generally, they have to follow the prescription strictly to maintain the effectiveness of the

medications and control the pimple problem.

Accordingly, our studies include various aspects focusing mainly on how the treatment

of acne improves the teenagers self esteem, followed by research regarding the contents plus

efficacy of the commercial pimple cream and prescribed medicated treatment. Based on this,

consumers, where the main target group are the teenagers, may able to choose the best

solution to handle their pimple dilemma.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES :

1. To know the effects of pimple cream on teenagers self esteem. The changes theyexperience before and after using it.

- Surveys were done to help us to understand how the appearance of pimples willaffect the social relationship of the teenagers. The correspondents also give

feedbacks regarding the improvement they experience after applying pimple cream.

2. Conduct studies regarding the contents used in pimple cream whether it is safe or not.- Certain consumers are not aware of the ingredients used by the manufacturers for

production of pimple creams. Most of the pimple cream contains the same active

ingredients, hence we do research to know the pros and cons of these ingredients.

3. Understand the mechanism of action of pimple cream. How it acts in order to reducepimples.

- Having the knowledge of one skin type can help us to investigate the cause ofpimple eruption which in turns gives indication on how the pimple cream works to

eradicate pimple problem.

4. Do a comparison between the commercial brands and medicated pimple cream.- Some people may not respond to the commercial brands and may need stronger

formulations to overcome their pimple problem. This comparison helps us to know

the advantages and disadvantages of the prescribed medications over the

commercial one.

MATERIALS AND METHODS :

1. Conduct series of survey (2 phase) : Test group : 20 students (Batch 24 student) Sample size : 180 students (Batch 25 and 26 student)

DATA MANAGEMENT AND STATISTIC ANALYSIS:

1. Tabulate and graphing the data from the survey.2. Extracting information from the journals, articles and literatures available.3. Do an assessment from the whole research and evaluate how the usage of pimple

cream gives impact to the teenagers confidence.

The method we use to study about the teenagers self esteem was through Q & A survey.

This method is better than individual interview is because it gives wider range of answers. Two

phase of survey were done to ensure the questionnaire designed works adequately.

The participants would be the students form MMMC, Manipal, from batch 26, 25 and 24.

We chose them because they are easier to approach and they are in the range of 19-24year old,

which is the target group for this research.

The questions in the survey form allow us to understand more regarding the pimple cream,

the self esteem of teenager and side effects the students faced after using or during the period

they apply the pimple cream.

Moreover, our studies include the information from journals, articles and literatures. The

external information gave us the guidance in constructing the questionnaire. The sources of

journals, articles and literatures were either from KMC library or internet.

Our survey results were analyzed by using pie charts, tables and graph bars. We do believe

that these methods will enable us to compare the results among the answers of under the

same question.

Benzoyl peroxide is usually prepared by

treating hydrogen peroxide with benzoyl chloride.

The oxygen-oxygen bond in peroxides is weak. Thus benzoyl peroxide readily undergoes

homolysis (symmetrical scission), forming free radicals:

indicates that the products are radicals; i.e., they contain at least one unpaired

electron. Such species are highly reactive.) The homolysis is usually induced by heating. The

half-life of benzoyl peroxide is one hour at 92 C. At 131 C, the half-life is one minute.[2]

Benzoyl peroxide works in two ways for the treatment of acne :

Mechanism of actions : It has few functions as an astringent, anti-inflammatory, antihistaminic,

membrane stabilizing and antioxidant activities. It is also believed to have analgesic properties,

possibly mediated via prostaglandin synthesis inhibition[12]

In one study by Bhargava (1989), proved that the flavonoid-rich fraction (5,7,3'-trihydroxy,

6,8,4'-trimethoxy flavones) ofVitex negundo[13]

was found to antagonize the androgenic action

of exogenous testosterone propionate thus decreasing the effect of hormone towards creating

SILK COTTON TREE (Salmalia malabarica)


Salmania malabarica has antibacterial and antifungal activity to overcome Acne vulgaris that

RESULTS & DISCUSSION (PART 1)

Question 1 : Do you have pimple problem?

Based on the survey done to 180 correspondents, 58% of them are facing and have experienced

pimple problem. This problem mainly occurs during puberty phase though some still suffer

from this condition up until 20+ years of age. However, these comparison is considered low

because the difference between the two percentages are low.

Question 2 : What is your skin type?

As depicted in the chart, majority of the correspondents are having oily skin, 46%, followed by

dry, 12%, sensitive, 11% and acne prone skin 10%. According to the research, one factor that

induces pimple eruption is skin types. Certain skin type such as oily skin is more prone for acne

formation than the others because increase sebum secretion can clog the facial pores. Also,

knowing the skin type helps in deciding which medication is best to use to overcome the

pimples.

Question 3: From your point of view, why pimples appear on your skin?

As mentioned earlier, there are a lot of factors that cause pimple. It is seen that most people

agree that one of the main cause of pimple is oily food. Puberty, which is often connected to

hormonal changes and instability, also plays an important role in progression of pimple. Other

factors such as hygiene, allergies to food and beauty products may worsen this problem.

Question 4: How pimple problems affect your psychology or emotion towards relationship?

The main objective of this research is to investigate how pimple problem can affect teenagers

self esteem during the phase of puberty. The correspondents include those having pimple

problem and those who are not. As depicted in the graph, 104 people feel neutral over the

appearance of pimple on their faces. This value doesnt correlate to the focus of the research as

these correspondents might not be having serious problem. However, the second group shows

that about 62 people agree that pimple problem do trigger the feeling of shyness and low self

esteem. Hence we could conclude that pimple does affect ones emotion.

Question 5: In your point of view, which is more effective product to control pimples?

Most of the respondents (149 out of 200 i.e. 74.5%) agreed that medicated pimple cream is

more effective to control pimples than commercial brands (51 out of 200, i.e. 25.5%). In spite of

this, every individual may choose any of the products suitable for them providing they know

what are their skin type and the severity of their pimple problem.

Question 6 records that 96 correspondents experienced no side effect during the application of

pimple cream. About 41 correspondents experience peeling of skin, 25 correspondents

reported they encounter irritation, dryness and worsening pimple problem while using themedications. Again, the variability of skin types may be the underlying reason for these

conditions.

The usage of pimple cream may differ from person to person depends on the severity of the

problem. More than half of the correspondents choose to use pimple cream only when there is

pimple. The second largest group, recorded with 43 correspondents (others) chooses not to use

any medications for their pimple problems. This is followed by twice a day, 25 correspondents,once daily, 17 correspondents and more than three times a day, 16 correspondents. We can

conclude that people who are more conscious about the problem will certainly opt for pimple

cream.

Question 9 : What are the improvements in emotion that you feel after using pimple cream?

As we could see earlier from question 4, about one third of correspondents feel shy and

reserved due to the pimple problems they have. Question 6 depicts the emotional transition

experienced by these users after a period of treatment using pimple cream. About 22% of the

correspondents feel they are more confident and have better self esteem after their pimple

eruption resides. The first group, which records 44% of the correspondents, is not taken into

consideration because as mentioned, most of the correspondents might not be having pimple

problem.

opinioned that they are uncertain if the medications worked, as majority of people choose not

to do anything with their pimple when they appear. As for the frequent users, 70 people agreed

Question 11 : I am concern about the ingredients of the cream before I buy it :-

88 correspondents agreed that it is important to know the ingredients contained in a pimple

cream before purchasing it. The same number also recorded uncertain and about 24 people

disagree with this question. However, it is advisable to know the contents in any products,

might it be pimple cream or other beauty regimen, before buying it.

As shown in this graph, 37% correspondents choose their pimple cream based on their friends

testimonial. Real changes and improvements undergone by previous users do increase ones

confidence in purchasing the products. 27.5% more use the concept of try and error in

choosing their pimple cream while 35.5% of the correspondents may hear it from the

advertisement or pamphlet.

CONCLUSION

Through the course of study, we have aimed to investigate the effectiveness of pimple

cream to eradicate pimple problem among teenagers, at the same time evaluate how this

action helps to improve their self esteem.

Based on our studies, we realized that acne treatment plays an important role for

people suffering from this embarrassing skin disease. Its effect is mainly on ones emotion; such

as crisis of confidence or the feeling of insecurity and depression.

Having acne will have an impact on interactions or social relations environment, where

teens become insecure and feel unconfident thus will lead to low self-esteem. The conscious

feeling of one self-image is often disturbed by the rise of acne, in turn, affect their social

interactions ability because for teenagers, the physical focus of an individual is more prominent

than in other life periods.

Basically, there are arrays of solutions the teenagers can take in order treat acne,

examples; topical creams, face wash or medicated prescription, which can improve the physical

appearance and indirectly, their self-esteem.
