Message from President Reba………

WOW! What a great time at Department and National Convention.

It was so great to see so many friendly faces from Arizona, and other Departments.

The weather was a little warm and muggy but, I had a great time. It was extra spe-

cial because my husband Tim was joining me this time around.

As you know there were a LOT of Bylaw changes suggested. Sorry to say that you

will have to buy new podium books again. (But that is something you should be

doing every year anyway.) National had suggested to take the words “God” out of

the bylaw but there was a lot of discussion on this matter and it was voted to leave

that part in. As for the resolutions that were presented. None were passed.

The highlight that I will NEVER forget is being escorted by Department Senior

Vice President Kim Harney and Junior Vice President Sheila Eiler with the flags. If

you are Facebook friends with me. I posted the video of the presentation. It was

just so awesome to be standing with the other Department Presidents. before the

National VFW Auxiliary delegation, representing you as your Department Presi-

dent.

At the Saturday evening ceremony, PDP Stephanie Morris was presented with the

very first “Circle of Excellence” award. Stephanie, we are so very proud of you and

the accomplishment and award that you so deserved. We as a Department were so

happy to be with you as you accepted the award. Well done!

The Department will be doing trainings with every District this year. Go to one, go

to them all. The trainings are not just limited to Auxiliary members. They are for

everyone to attend. Your Department Officers and the Department Chairmen will

be doing the trainings on ALL the programs including MALTA.

Speaking of MALTA go to the website: maltavfwauxiliary.org and activate your

account. You will need your membership number. You will then have to enter your

name exactly as it is on your card and enter a password. Then when Kim Sloan

sends out the mass email, you will be ready. There are still a few glitches from Na-

tional and we are hoping it will be ready soon.

As you continue the rest of the year in your Auxiliary and District. Please continue

to share your events, your flyers, your pictures. Be proud, be excited, but please

watch your pictures, your flyers etc. Try not to have any pictures with alcohol in

them. If you think of it as, you are reaching out to the community to share what

you are doing for our Veterans, Military and their families. And you are hoping

that they will be potential members. You do NOT want them to just think of the

Post and Auxiliary as just a bar.

Thank you for your continued support of our Veterans, Military and their families

by always Remembering, Honoring and Respecting them.

Chrissy Harlan—Chief of Staff

We have moved into a new Auxiliary year. During this time of transition, we have the opportunity to rethink, reevaluate, and cast aside preconceived notions, allowing us to open our minds to new possibilities. It is important to continue our commitment to a Healthy Auxiliary and reset our goals. A positive attitude and outlook are vital as we travel together into the future. Each Auxiliary was given a copy of the 2017-2018 Program Guide and Roster. In the Chief of Staff section you will find the Year End Summary, Mentoring Guide, and Member Questionnaire The Year End Summary is self explanatory but if you have questions please feel free to contact me. The Mentoring Guide is a must read for every VFW Auxiliary member. We all need to show every member we care and use the CARE System for not only our new members but those that have been inactive for awhile. The VFW Auxiliary Ritual now uses the word please in several areas instead of commands as it did in the past. The Auxiliary should be a kind, gen-tle and fun place to serve veterans and their families. We are all Mentors whether we know it or not. As VFW Auxiliary members someone is always watching us. Be it at bingo, in the canteen, in the meetings, or at program functions others see how we act and hear what we say. Are you friendly and have a positive attitude or are you negative? Do you speak highly of others or spread gossip and rumors? When was the last time you said “that way won’t work” or “we have always done it this way”? Since we are all Mentors let’s do our very best to be good ones.

The Member Questionnaire has some changes this year. Auxiliary Presi-dents please get this to as many of your members as possible. Don’t stop with just the ones that come to meetings. Use email, snail mail, personal vis-its, etc. to get the Questionnaire into the hands of your members. You need to know why the others aren’t active. How can you give them what they want in an Auxiliary if you don’t know what they want? Members PLEASE com-plete the survey and return it to the President. This is your chance to help your Auxiliary succeed.

Americanism—Janae Kemery Email: [email protected]

It is hard to believe it is Summer time already, hope everyone is staying cool. Please Remember the Deadline has changed for Teacher of the Year. Nominations now need to be turned in by October 30th. Each year three exceptional teachers are recognized by the VFW for their outstanding com-mitment to teach Americanism and Patriotism to their students. The VFW annually recog-nizes the nation's top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics at least half of the school day in a classroom environment and promote America's history, traditions, and institutions effectively. The VFW National Citi-zenship Education Teacher Award recipients are selected from entries submitted by local VFW Post in every state and overseas.

Patriot Day September 11th Patriot Day, also known as the National Day of Service and Re-membrance, occurs on September 11th. This day was set by a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001, (Public Law 107-89). Congress authorized the President to designate September 11th of each year as “Patriot Day” to perpetuate the memory of those who perished in the terrorist attack on America on Sep-tember 11, 2001. We can participate in appropriate activities including a moment of silence at 8:46 am. Flags should be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day.

Please remember that we can Partner Up our programs at any event/activities. I would like to suggest to also TEAM UP with other auxiliaries and/or with Posts that do not have auxiliary.

Military Suicide Awareness.

Well here we are starting off a new year in our Hospital program and I am excited to get started. To intro-duce myself I am from Auxiliary 11014 Meadview and I am honored to be the Chairperson for the Hospital program 2017-2018 for Department President Reba Dermody. I would like to thank Alexia Thompson for taking the time to speak with me and give me great advice and some of her knowledge

The first thing I would like to talk about is the Hospital Grant I hope this year we have many Auxiliaries apply for help with a special project for a Veterans Home or Hospital or a Clinic. I will have on the web site a list of things from the Phoenix and Prescott Veterans Hospitals that would be of help to them. Just go to the resource page and look at the hospital program and you will see the link for information.

The Application for the Grant is on line at www.azvfwaux.org/resources if for any reason you can’t get on line just call me or email me and I will get you a copy.

The next thing I would like to let you know about is the years Special Project, it is a time for the Auxiliary and Post to come together as a team and all program chairpersons are encouraged to participate. It is called THE FAMILY FREEDOM FESTIVAL what is asked of you is to do a special event in your Community for all Veterans and their families. Make sure you have all programs information there for everyone to see and have copies so you can give out to anyone interested in volunteering. Have the Suicide Awareness hot-line number pamphlet you can give out. Also talk to Veterans who approach about writing their stories down for the Voice Writing Program. I know you can come up with more things and I wish all of you suc-cess in this project.

I would like to congratulate Therese Hixson from Auxiliary 9907 for winning the Volunteer of the year award this year. Arizona has won this award 3 years in a row in our division with 2 of them coming from Auxiliary 9907. Congratulations not only to Therese but to 9907 Auxiliary job well done.

Auxiliaries please remember you must complete The Family Freedom Festival to be qualified for The Ar-izona Circle of Excellence Award at the end of the year.

Membership—Sheila Lee Eiler

Email: [email protected]

I am honored and excited to be your membership chairman this year. This year we have big shoes to fill as

the Department of Arizona, has reached 105.76%, for the 2016-2017 year. This 2017-2018 year we must hit

the ground running, which I am sure we are ready to do!

Our National website - vfwauxiliary.org/resources, is a great resource guide for Membership and Leader-

ship. These resources are a means to guide you with your program and make it a success. Check out the in-

formation on the Catch Five Member Recruiter Award and the 2017 – 2018 National Membership

Achievement Award.

I would like you for to pay close attention to something new this year 2017 -2018. The new Membership

Engagement Packet contains a list of items to place into your new member packets. This packet contains

items on how to successfully retain new members. The New member Orientation checklist is a great guide

for engaging new members which includes a sample welcome letter that can be downloaded from our web-

site at www.azvfwaz.org..

Remember - A new member is an engaged member, but often someone who needs to have an orientation

into the VFW Auxiliary. It’s best to hand the New Member Packet to them personally at a meeting or social

gathering, but it can be mailed as well. It’s important that the new member feels welcome and appreciated as

they are often eager to volunteer and help veterans and their families.

This is what we need to remember when we sign up new members. Auxiliary members can feel pride when

they are engaging our new members. Sit next to the new member in our meetings to mentor and explain

what is in the new member packet and help them understand our auxiliary traditions.

Then there is the adventure of working the programs. Explain why we as the auxiliary do what we do to sup-

port veterans. Share all information with the free pamphlets and leaflets and download brochures and pro-

grams from the National Website.

We all have something to share and bring to the table. Our new members can also have resources that help

our auxiliaries with the programs. Taking extra time with a new member in the beginning means we win at

engaging and retaining our new members.

To be continued……..

National Recruiter Trainer

Kim Harney [email protected]

Welcome to a new year! It is hard to believe that this is the beginning of our fourth year of the recruiter program. Since the Department has started using the Recruiter Program with its tools, trainings and incentives, you the mem-bers have made the Department of Arizona 100+%. That’s three years in a row of being over 100%. You should be very proud of yourselves. I am betting that this year will be the fourth year. Our membership count as of the end of June was 10,156. What an accomplishment for our Department to have over 10,000 members!! It is very important that we keep the members that we have and continue to grow as an organization so that we can continue to help veterans and their families.

.

This year, like last, there will be an Arizona Circle of Excellence Award that your Auxiliary can achieve. Points are earned by completing different criteria. One way your Auxiliary can earn points is to attend trainings. 2 points can be earned every time a member attends Recruiter/District training. You may attend as many trainings as you would like but you must be there when it starts and stay for the whole training. Trainings have been set up and are as fol-lows: Aug 8th at 7400 from 10-3; August 19th at 9400 from 10-3; August 26th at 10726 from 11-4; Sept 23rd at 549 from 10-3; Sept 24th at 3584 from 10-3; and Sept 30th at 9907 from 10-3. In addition to recruiter training there will be schools of instructions on the programs by the chairman as well as MALTA training. It will be a day packed with information. When you attend training make sure you sign in, so that your Auxiliary will get credit for you attending training. Points will be displayed in the Pin Points again this year.

Another way for your Auxiliary to earn points is by completing the new membership form and submitting it to me each month. This form is in the program guide, and on the Department website. If you can’t find it, let me know and I will email it to you. With the new MALTA system, it is going to be harder for me to track who is recruiting and how many they are signing up each month. This form is important so that members can continue to earn recruiting awards. At each of your meetings, fill out the form with the new member’s information and send it on to me. You mail email it or snail mail. If you don’t have any new members, simply let me know. Each form sent in earns your Auxiliary 5 points.

There will be a new membership pin that National will be giving out to any member that signs up five new/rejoin members. It is a baseball glove. I will take care of sending in the paperwork. The “Wall of Fame” will continue this year. If you sign up 5 new/rejoin members, your name will be on placed on the Arizona webpage under the “Wall of Fame”. If you sign up 10 new/rejoin members, you can earn the Arizona pin with this year’s rocker or if you already have the pin, you will obtain just the rocker. National will be once again awarding the National Membership Achievement Award. This award can be earned for signing up 20 new members (no rejoins). I will take care of this paperwork as well.

Please let me know if I can be of any help to you or your Auxiliary as we begin the new year.

Tip of the month – Remember to mentor our new members and continue to make all members feel welcome as you begin to work the programs.

Scholarship—Sandy Iosue Email: [email protected]

Here we are again, ready to start a new program year for our beloved organization and the young people who are the future of our great nation, THE UNITED STATES OF AMERI-CA!

I am, once again, pleased and proud to be the Department of Arizona Scholarship Chairman-a position I held 3years ago for PDP, Suzie Gleason.

As I did then, I still believe in promoting these scholarship opportunities in the order of their deadlines. Therefore, Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen will receive first priority.

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! ATTENTION! ATTENTION!

The DEADLINE for the Voice of Democracy & Patriot's Pen Scholarships is OCTOBER 31, 2017.

Rules, Applications, & Deadlines for these Scholarship opportunities can be found in your Department Auxiliary 2017-2018 Program Guide and Roster, and on the Department Auxil-iary website at www.azvfwaux.org. as well as the VFW Department website at www.vfwaz.org

I will now briefly mention the remaining Scholarship opportunities: The Continuing Educa-tion Scholarship, The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest, and The Arizona VFW Auxiliary Scholarship. All are available in the Department Auxiliary Program Guide and on the Department Auxiliary website mentioned above.

Future articles will include details on ALL Scholarship opportuni-ties and their eligibility requirements.

Don't forget, Brothers & Sisters, by assisting the Post in the Voice of Democracy & Patriot's Pen as requested, you are fulfilling the theme of our National President, Dee Guillory, which is "Catch the Dream for Our Veterans", and our Department President, Reba Der-mody, which is "Remember, Respect, Honor".

Veterans & Family Support

Marilyn Russell

Email: [email protected]

Welcome to Veterans and Family Support Program for 2017-2018. Veterans are the heartbeat of our organi-

zation.

This month I would like to focus on items 1, 2, 3 of the End of Year Summary. #1 is National Veteran ser-

vices. There are many veterans in need of benefits from their military service. This entity provides training

to service officers who can assist veterans by giving them guidance on how to file a claim. #2 is Veteran and

Military Support Program. This covers the Unmet needs, Operation Uplink, and Military Assistance Pro-

gram, MAP. Information on these is provided in the Program guide received at convention. #3 is assistance

to veterans. Assistance to veterans such as serving meals, buying food, taking a veteran and family members

to a doctor appointment, repairs to their home, and cards sent are ideas. These can be tracked through do-

nations to Department as well as the Program Activity report, PAR.

The Family Freedom Festival is the Special Project on the End of Year Summary. This festival is geared to

promoting the VFW Auxiliary organization and teaches the public about our programs. A booth can be set

up to display literature on National Military Service, Veteran and Family Support, Sports Clips scholarship,

and VFW National Home. It is also an opportunity to distribute Buddy Poppies.

VETERAN CORNER: Our veterans can be recognized in many ways. Throughout the year, create cards

signed by the Auxiliary members to distribute. These can be given on a veteran birthday, patriotic holiday,

or a specific day each month. Cards can also be designed by students if the Auxiliary works with class-

rooms.

PARTNER UP

Americanism: September 11 is Patriot Day. Plan a tribute to remember those lives lost in 2001. September

15 is POW/MIA recognition Day. Read about the Missing Man table ceremony on vfwauxiliary.org

Youth Activities—Denise Williams Email: [email protected]

My name is Denise Williams. I'm the Youth Chairperson for 2017-18. I'm new at this so

please be patient, we can learn together. My phone number in the roster is wrong my number

is 520-371-0510 feel free to contact me. I'm looking forward in working with each, and eve-

ry one of you.

I would like to start the year with a Back to School drive for the youth in our communities.

You can go to the local schools to get a list of supplies that they will need. You’d be amazed

at how many kids don't have what they need to start off the school year. You can also go out

in your community, and see if other groups or businesses would help by donating

items………then go to the local schools and drop off the items! Consider adopting a class-

room.

We need to make sure no child is left behind. Just by even helping one child we can make a

difference!

If your auxiliary is having an event let me know I would try to attend and help. Don't forget

about our RAP Coins! Give one to amazing student If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
