Good evening Ladies, Gentlemen and Children
John Epton, Honorary Chairman
If you would like to become a Patron of this Society please send your gift, however small, to Hazel Daniels.
“An acknowledgement will be sent”
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our production of H.M.S. Pinafore. This is the first full length Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, written and produced in 1879.
In the absence of our producer Prue Gardiner, due to a recovery from an operation I have taken over the production and had great help from Colin Jones and Carol Wallman, with dancing. Alana has re-arranged the score with many reprises for the ladies chorus and extra dancing . We have introduced the “lost” duet, “Reflect, My Child”, withdrawn after the first performance and inserted “The Hornpipe” from Ruddigore for Ralph and the dancers. I am also pleased to have Gordon Hodges, who has been a great help with dancing and, of course, his gorgeous tenor voice.
May I also thank Hazel and John Daniels for the superb set and all those who have helped with this production, both front of house and backstage.
I wish you all a must enjoyable evening and hope to see you again in 2016 for “This is 1956” and for “Patience” in November.

The StoryH.M.S. Pinafore
On the fore-deck of H.M.S. Pinafore, Captain Corcoran and his ship’s company prepare for the official visit of Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty: a lawyer and
politician whose ship-knowledge seems not to have progressed beyond his professional “partnership”. His immediate purpose centres less on the ship than on the Captain’s daughter, Josephine - “the fairest flower that ever blossomed on ancestral timber” - but whose affections, in turn, are necessarily engaged elsewhere.
The ensuing elopement, “carefully on tiptoe stealing”, provokes Captain Corcoran to unguarded profanity (scandalising, at least to Victorian ears in 1878!) and Sir Joseph
to absolute horror. With full musical honours in eight parts, Josephine’s inamorato is consigned to the cells - until the Portsmouth bum-boat woman Mrs Cripps (a.k.a. “Little Buttercup”) delivers a truly Gilbertian dénouement with all the authority of an official utterance!

This year has been a very sad one for the society with the deaths of Dorothy Williams, a former vice-chairman, June Game a wonderful pianist for many years and Virginia Shorten, Vice President, life member, Secretary and committee member, who joined the society in 1959. We extend our sympathies to all the families and friends.
