Would like to thank all who have donated to Dorcas. We especially can use the baby yarn given anonymously. Please note only baby yarn is used for the hats, preemie blankets & booties. Other yarn can be given by you, to Alma Sue's Quilts (by Der Dutchman restaurant) or the World's Attic on N. Beneva.

The only fabric Dorcas can use currently is fleece in children's patterns for blankets for layettes. Dorcas has an excess of fabric & would be glad to give fabric to any other organization you know of that can use it. No donations of sewing supplies, ribbons, laces, buttons, etc are needed as Dorcas has them in excess.

If you have items to donate, please describe them to Jackie Fountaine 955-5569 before leaving them at the church. Dorcas does have heart pillow cut-outs that need sewing. Thank you to Margo Antenucci, a volunteer a My Choice, who made 50 heart pillows that were delivered to Sarasota Memorial Cardiac Intensive Care. We also has a Sarasota Humane Society volunteer that knits hats for layettes & preemies. If you know of anyone willing to sew or knit at home please have them contact Jackie. We supply what they need.

On February 2nd, Pine Shores Youth Group, participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring for the 15th consecutive year. The Souper Bowl of Caring is a youth-inspired, youth-led movement working with other groups across the nation to tackle hunger in their local communities during the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. Over the last 15 years, PSY has raised $188,609 and collected 27,937 items of food for local food pantries such as All Faiths Food Bank and Beth El Farmworker Ministry. This year, the youth group raised $6,429 and 2,307 food items. Thanks to our generous congregation, PSY is able to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring and give back to the community.

Thank you Pine Shores Community for supporting PSY in collecting money and cans for local Sarasota food banks. We couldn’t do this every year without your help!

Sarasota Choir Festival

Choir also performed as the featured ensemble in the 2018 Sarasota Concert Music Matinee series at the Van Wezel.

Under the direction of Melodie Dickerson with accompanist, Lurray Myers, the SCF Chamber Choir presents a varied repertoire of music from Renaissance madrigals to cutting edge choral works as well as contemporary jazz tunes and traditional choral literature. The choir is led by Melodie Dickerson who is in her fifteenth year as Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at State College of Florida. Lurray Myers has served as staff accompanist for the Music Program at SCF since 1991.

Spring Concert Series And then on Sunday, March 29th at 5:00 p.m. we will conclude our concert season with Ring Sarasota handbell ensemble. This community handbell ensemble is under the direction of our own Rick Holdsworth.

Fresh off of our incredibly successful 9th season tour, titled “Celebrate Sarasota,” Ring Sarasota is excited to announce the theme for our 10th anniversary season: “The Beat Goes On – Ring Sarasota Celebrates 10 years!” The program will include audience favorites chosen from our past nine seasons as well as a few new dynamic handbell arrangements, composed/arranged in the last 10 years, demonstrating that the beat indeed does go on!

To honor this landmark year, Ring Sarasota commissioned Michael Glasgow, a world renowned composer, conductor and arranger, to write a special piece for us. We are very proud to be able to premier this exciting composition, “Beneath the Sparkling Skies,” during our 10th season! Whether you like upbeat and energetic, melodic and calm, hummable, Calypso, or jazz, we are sure you will enjoy this year’s concert selections!

SURE’s Nehemiah Action Gathering will take place on Monday, March 23rd at 6:30 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium, 801 N. Tamiami Trail to address the justice issues of Restorative Practices in our schools, civil citations for adult first time non-violent offenders and affordable housing. Presently, city and county leaders will be there to hear our concerns and will be asked to take action to address these concerns. The meeting will last about 2 hours. Here is an up-date on the issues/concerns being addressed.

Restorative Practices: At the present there are five pilot elementary schools participating in this program – Fruitville, Venice, Gulf Gate, Bayhaven and Ashton. The plan is to add three more pilot schools.

Criminal Justice: Between 2009 and 2013, 16,044 people in Sarasota were arrested for non-violent misdemeanors. Only 2,734 were convicted. That means that 13,310 individuals were found not guilty, but still received an arrest record. At least 7 counties in Florida have successfully implemented an adult civil citation program which provides sanctions when an offense is committed, but keeps non-violent offenders from receiving and arrest record that will stay with them for the rest of their live.

Affordable Housing: 1 in 4 families in Sarasota struggle to afford the cost of housing. A person working minimum wage would need to work 75 hours per week to afford the average apartment. A family of four making $42,000 can afford $1,000 in rent; there is almost no housing in Sarasota for these working families. 16,000 workers in Sarasota don’t earn enough to afford the average rent; there are less than 700 units that these workers can afford. 800 counties across the country, including Pinellas County and Hillsborough County, have implemented a local fund to support the development of housing for working families. SURE leaders are pressing our city and county leaders to create such a fund (The city is being asked to contribute $5 million and the county $10 million). We will be pressing the city officials to take steps to ensure that $5 million in dedicated revenue for this fund is included in the 2021 budget.

Our goal is have at least 50 folks from Pine Shores attend the Nehemiah Action Gathering. If you have any questions or need a ride, please contact Paul Reiter, Ken Junkins or Karen Wismer.

This year’s Vacation Bible School (VBS) is called Rocky Railway. Kids will explore Jesus’ power and discover that they can trust Jesus’ power through life’s ups and downs. The kids will look at story of Ananias helping Saul, Paul encouraging others in a storm and shipwreck, Peter and John teaching about Jesus, and how the church is united in its mission and witness. VBS will take place from Monday, June 1st through Friday, June 5th from 9:00 a.m. unto 12 noon. If you would like to help, please contact Karen or Kiley at the church office.
