In a speech delivered at last spring’s Baccalaureate, a graduating senior read from a paper she had written for an English class. The assignment involved describing a utopian society. “An idealistic community,” she wrote, “is one whose members can interact in an effortless manner, understanding and respecting each other. When faced with adversity, they all work collaboratively to overcome the challenge presented. The collective student and faculty body at Pingree possesses each and every one of these qualities.”
I invite you to visit our Pingree community, an ideal place for students to work and play, to stumble and stretch, and to be known and encouraged as they grow into young men and women of courage, compassion, competence, and confidence.

“Every day I walk in the
front doors of Pingree School, in view of
the state of the art academic wing, new
art center, and emerging field house,
I feel fortunate that the heart of our
school remains a home. More than the
building makes Pingree School a home.
It is the atmosphere of trust, support,
curiosity, and commitment. It is the
environment that encourages teachers
and students to think critically, embrace
intellectual risks, and consider the ideas
and perspective of others. It is the culture
that values all its members as people,
not just as teachers and students. What
an amazing place in which to teach,
learn, and grow!

Prep@Pingree is our nationally recognized program that provides ongoing academic and cultural enrichment for talented, hard-working, middle school students predominantly from underserved communities and strengthens the Pingree school community.
Each year, 45 to 50 middle school students who have completed seventh or eighth grades engage in five weeks of academic and co-curricular enrichment. Coursework in math, English, engineering design, and history involve in-depth classroom discussions, homework, and detailed assessments in the forms of tests, papers, and presentations. Co-curricular activities provide opportunities for students to develop skills such as public speaking, interviewing techniques, and collaboration with one’s peers. One day each week is dedicated to off-campus trips designed to broaden each student’s perspective and teach important life lessons in perseverance, as well as physical and emotional health. Each component of Prep@Pingree is designed to prepare students for the rigors of eighth grade, high school, and beyond.
Prep@Pingree alumni matriculate to public, independent, and parochial schools. Currently, five percent of Pingree School’s enrollment is Prep@Pingree alumni. Other Prep@Pingree alumni have attended Brooks School, Central Catholic High School, Noble and Greenough School, Phillips Academy at Andover, St. John’s Preparatory School, and The Governor’s Academy. The first Prep@Pingree alumni graduated from college in 2011, a first for most of their families.
We are proud to be one of the few independent schools in the country that is intensely focused on providing access to high quality education to a wide range of individuals through this innovative and successful program.
PreP@Pingree
ACCess AT Pingree
Pingree believes strongly that access to an excellent independent school education should be available to qualified students, regardless of their families’ financial means. In that spirit, Pingree offers a need-based financial aid program and hopes that no student will be discouraged from applying because of financial limitations. Currently, 31 percent of Pingree’s student body receives tuition assistance. Please consult the Admission page on the school website for complete information about applying for financial aid.

Pingree School is committed to ensuring that all of our students have access to the many learning opportunities that enrich the Pingree experience. Because of our deep commitment to educational access, Pingree has a fund reserved for those who might need financial support beyond tuition; awards are granted on a case-by-case basis as long as funds are available. Our Trips Financial Aid Policy has been created to allow for increased participation in academic and co-curricular trips. We also have a used book program so that we can alleviate this expense for families. Furthermore, since we value the many important educational experiences that occur after our school day ends, late transportation can be provided for students after the afternoon bus departure time.
Coming to Pingree was the best decision I think I've made so far in my life. I have not only been encouraged but also supported by students and faculty to try new things. I came in thinking I was nothing more than an athlete, but after two years I feel like I'm so much more. Pingree is a place that allows you to grow as an individual and feel what it's like to be a part of a community.

Over the past four years, Pingree has become
not only my second home,
but also a gateway to greater
things. Inside the classroom,
I was challenged to think
more critically in Engineering
and to speak more articulately
in Mandarin. Outside of the
classroom, I was encouraged to
be tenacious on the basketball
court and graceful on the dance
floor. As a result of my academic,
athletic, and artistic discoveries,
I firmly believe that Pingree has
directly connected my dreams
of higher education and success
to reality.

After completing my first year at Amherst College, I realized that the skills I learned at Pingree played a pivotal role in my success. My transition from high school academics to college was a very fluid process. Like many of my Pingree classmates, I was prepared to think critically, express my opinions in the classroom, and build relationships with my professors the way I did in high school. Pingree truly taught me what it meant to be not only a student-athlete, but also a leader in all aspects of my college community.

Pingree is more than just a school; it’s my home away from home. I truly value the
tight-knit community here at Pingree where you can turn to both your peers and teachers for
support and guidance. What Pingree has given me is the independence to step up and make
a difference in my community. From starting my own club, Math It Up, to raising money for
my charity, the Alzheimer’s Association, Pingree allows me to turn my passions into reality,
and for that, I am forever grateful.

Civic engagement is at the very heart of Pingree’s Service
Learning Program. During freshman year, Pingree
students build a foundation for their later service
learning by developing personal stewardship of the
school and their responsibility to not only conserve, but
improve, the Pingree community. As upperclassmen,
Pingree students expand their service learning through
their involvement in organizations outside of Pingree.
Through long-term partnerships and direct interactions
with people outside of Pingree, students learn how to
adjust to the needs of others rather than expect them
to adjust to their expectations. Our Service Learning
philosophy involves learning how to serve through
listening, being available, reflecting, relating, and
advocating for others. Throughout their years at Pingree,
students learn how to plan, lead, and inspire service in
others at Pingree and in the community at large.

During the 2012–2013 school year, Pingree students and their families hosted students, teachers, and administrators from Spain, Taiwan, Armenia, and Mexico. During their March vacation, Pingree students traveled to Barcelona, Spain and Taichung City, Taiwan where they were hosted in turn by their new international friends. All students participated in classes and immersed themselves in twelve days of language, art, history, and culture. One senior completed her May Senior Project in Barcelona with a study of Antonio Gaudí and his architecture.
In 2013 – 2014, Pingree students and faculty will participate in a series of international exchanges which include:
1. The Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield, England
2. Århus Købmandsskole in Aarhus, Denmark
3. Collegi Pare Manyanet in Barcelona, Spain
4. Taichung Municipal Hui-Wen High School in Taichung City, Taiwan
5. The Harkness Institute in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico
Throughout the coming year, LAB will continue to explore new destinations that provide more opportunities for our students to engage in travel experiences that complement their studies and allow them to make meaningful connections across local, regional, and international borders.
The Learning Across Borders Program at Pingree provides international and domestic travel experiences that allow students to connect what they are learning in the classroom with the world at large. Through LAB’s program of student/teacher exchanges, students have opportunities to research, study, and experience people, cultures, and languages different from their own. They learn to compare, question, examine, understand and appreciate a broad range of viewpoints, histories, and cultural perspectives.

• It is Pingree’s philosophy that college counseling begins the minute a student walks into Pingree freshman year, since teachers and advisors are immediately guiding the students’ educational and extracurricular choices towards their intellectual and personal growth and their next steps beyond Pingree.
• Special interest evenings are offered for students and parents in all grades. Our “Athletics in the College Admission Process” program features a panel of coaches, athletics directors, and admissions liaisons from Division 1, 2, and 3 schools who discuss the recruiting process and answer questions. Our “Arts in the College Admission Process” hosts a group of college professors, admission officers from a number of art schools, and Pingree alumni who pursued the arts in their college education. Our “Financial Information and Planning” workshops offer information and guidance to families on how to pursue aid options.
• The college counseling staff meets with tenth grade parents to introduce them to the college process. Our three counselors explain the importance of course selection for junior year and that each student will have a counselor to work with individually during junior and senior year.
• Since Pingree college counselors work with no more than 35 students at a time, the relationship between each counselor and student is very personal and close. The counselor gets to know the student well and the student and parents trust the counselor to guide them through the process wisely, taking into account the particular skills, interests, and needs of each family and child.
• College applications have become more complex in recent years. Should a student apply Early Action? Early Decision? Early Decision II? How does this impact one’s chances of acceptance? How does this affect financial aid decisions? Navigating this terrain requires not only experience, but also time, wisdom, and sensitivity. Pingree’s Office of College Counseling offers this to students every day. Their doors are open for scheduled one-on-one meetings, impromptu check-ins, college prep classes, and parent meetings every day.
THe BeneFiTs oF our College Counseling
• Our counselors have extensive experience in college counseling and admissions work and have earned the respect of their peers and colleagues. They are frequently asked to speak at conferences nationwide. For the second consecutive year, Co-Director Meghan Farley has been named to the College Counseling Advisory Board of the Princeton Review, an honor bestowed on only 25 college counselors from public and independent secondary schools in the country.
• Our counselors work closely with students and families to help them apply for financial aid, scholarships, and grants. As the costs of higher education continue to rise, we believe it is essential that families have support in negotiating the complexities of financing college.
• Our counselors not only know their advisees well; they also know colleges and universities throughout the country well. They visit schools around the country, attend professional development conferences, and host more than 100 college representatives on our campus each year. They have cultivated strong relationships with colleges and universities throughout the nation and in several other countries. Consequently, these institutions know who Pingree students are, what kind of education and character they bring with them to college, and how they will contribute to their new academic and social communities.
• As a result, our college counselors are able to guide Pingree students towards the best fit for each one of them. Over the past several years, over three quarters of Pingree students have been accepted by their first or second choice schools.

I like to think of Pingree as a place that fosters a Renaissance
education. Pingree concentrates on the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. People in
the Pingree community spend their days immersed in academic, athletic, artistic and
philosophical challenges. One of the true joys of being a teacher at Pingree is watching
students discover new interests or talents through Pingree’s multi-faceted curriculum.

Pingree students
continually astound me
with the breadth of their
accomplishments. What's even
greater, perhaps, is their ability
to leave all of their laurels at the
door and engage meaningfully
each day with a multitude of
subjects. All of this, combined
with a passionate and open-
minded faculty, makes Pingree
a truly exuberant and dynamic
place to learn and flourish.

environment that strives for educational excellence.
