M. MURRAY-DAVEY (Bass) Pogner's Address Wagner c Act I., Scene 3 "Die Meistersinger." In German A n,Y24 1' CIAQui sdegno non s'accende Mozart

(Within these sacred bowers). "Il Flauto Madico." In Italian With The Aeolian Orchestra

T says much for Murray-Davey that in spite of his British patronymic I he has long been one of the most popular artists at the Paris Grand Opera. He is in point of fact British by descent-he was born in

Guernsey in 1877-but French by training and adoption, since he studied in Paris and had the rare distinction of making his first appearance on any stage in the Paris opera house.

But then such a voice as his-a bass of the finest quality and the most extensive compass-especially when backed by consummate vocal art and rare powers as an actor, was bound to win speedy recognition, and from the very first Murray-Davey has been reckoned in the first flight of contemporary operatic singers.

His actual debut he made as Kaspar in "Der Freischiitz" and since then he has appeared with unvarying success in all the principle bass roles. To London opera-goers he is well known through his many appearances at Covent Garden, where he received his first engagement in 1909, and where, it is pleasant to note, he is singing again this summer in the current season.

Great days indeed were those for opera when Murray-Davey first came among us and no-one who recalls them will forget his many memorable impersonations, in company with Melba, Caruso and other great ones of the past, as Mephistopheles, as Leporello in "Don Giovanni,"

as the Landgrave in "Tannhäuser" and in other famous parts.

But Murray-Davey, though best known in opera, has not confined his attention to the stage by any means. On the contrary he is one of the greatest of living concert singers, in which capacity his magnetic personal- ity and brilliant interpretative gifts serve him no less happily than on the stage. But "the proof of the pudding," etc., and for evidence of Murray-Davey's powers one need want nothing more than the two magnificent records with which he has just enriched our catalogue.

MALCOLM McEACHERN (Bass) The Mighty Deep W. H. Jude

Piano Accompaniment Stanley chapple - K- 05171 12" 4/6 From Oberon in Fairyland D. D. Slater ) Orchestral Accompaniment

HERE are two more splendid records showing off that mighty basso, Mr. Malcolm McEachern, once again to the finest possible effect. Lucky indeed is the composer who jets this wonderful singer on his side! For even the humblest ballad he makes a

thing of wonder and delight in virtue of the amazing wealth and sonority of gorgeous vocal tone with which he invests its simplest phases. Take as an instance of his powers that astonishing bottom note which he touches-the lowest vocal tone, we believe, which has ever been recorded (bottom B-flat)- in the first of the two songs above listed. "The Mighty Deep" indeed !

FRANK TITTERTON (Tenor) Costanza, Costanza Mozart

"Il Seraglio." In Italian K-05172 12" 4/6 Where'er you Walk. "Semele" Handel With The Aeolian Orchestra

T WO immortal classical numbers are here presented in faultless style by a singer who has long since established himself in the good graces of ' Vocalion" lovers. As a concert-singer Mr Titterton is perhaps better known in the Provinces than in London

though he has made many appearances on Metropolitan platforms, as for instance at the Promenades and at the Ballads, with great success.

In the beautiful number from Mozart's "Il Seraglio" he displays to particular advantage his fine declamatory style, while the lovely air from "Semele," a delicious example of Handel in his noblest and most expressive vein, he has also most artistically interpreted.

ETHEL HOOK (Contralto) Ships of my dreams T. Wilkinson Stephenson I DaVby and Joan J. L. Molloy j X 9570 10' 3ý-

Piano Accompaniments Edith Page

A LTHOUGH the public reputation of Miss Ethel Hook has almost inevitably been over- shadowed to some extent by that of her more famous sister, Dame Clara Butt, it needs only to hear either of the two records of which particulars are given above to realise

that she also is the happy possessor of a voice of the most beautiful quality, which she uses moreover in the most tasteful and artistic manner. It may be noted further that her voice is one of those which "record" particularly well, as both of these numbers indicate.

Clerical song-writers are not very numerous but 11 Ships of my Dreams" is, it may be noted, by a member of the cloth, Canon T. Wilkinson Stephenson, who has several other popular ballads to his credit, while "Darby and Joan" is of course a very old favourite of earlier days.

ADILA FACHIRI (Violin) Spanish Dance Granados-Kreisler

Violin Solo. Piano Accompaniment Ivor Newton K-05173 12" 4ý6 Sarabande. From B minor Suite Bach Violin Solo. Unaccompanied

A sister of Miss jelly d'ATanyi and a grand-niece of Joachim, Mme Adila Fachiri supplies yet another instance of fine musicianship running in the blood. Of the two delightful records by Mme. Fachiri herewith presented one is an effective arrangement

by Kreisler of a charming Spanish Dance by the ill-fated Enrique Granados-he went down in the sub-marined Sussex, it will be remembered, during the Great War- while the other is a familiar example of Bach, both exhibiting her powers to the finest advantage.

Especially noticeable in the case of the latter is the breadth and dignity of theinterpre- tation while squally conspicuous in both is the superb quality of the tone-in which latter connection it may be of interest to mention that Mme. Fachiri plays on a magnificent Strad which belonged to Dr Joachim.

ALBERT SAMMONS (Violin), LIONEL TERTIS (Viola), ETHEL HOBDAY (Piano)

Trio No. VII., Op. 16 Mozart, arranged Tertis ' 3rd movement : Alle,,rettoK-05174 12" 4/6

LIONEL TERTIS (Viola) Barcarolle. viola solo Tchaikovsky,

Piano Accompaniment Ethel Hobday arranged Tertis THIS Trio was one of several written by Mozart for Piano, Violin and 'Cello, but in

the present example the viola takes the place of the deeper toned instrument and the connoisseur will not fail to notice with what masterly skill Mr. Tertis has adapted

Mozart's original scoring. With what perfect sympathy and understanding the work has been interpreted needs

no pointing out, while the fine quality of the recording is not less noticeable. It may be added that the first and second movements of this trio were issued on a previous record (I1-02150) so that the whole delightful work is now obtainable complete.

BY common consent Mr. Lionel Terris stands facile princeps among viola players-or violists as they are sometimes called-of the present day and those who would learn how he has acquired this commanding reputation cannot do better than possess them-

selves of this tine record and draw their own conclusions. The explanation is of course simple enough. Mr. Tertis is not only a superb executant, who can do things on his viola which even violinists can hardly accomplish on the infinitely nimbler fiddle, but also a Areal musician whose marvellous technique goes hand in hand with the finest in"erpretative powers. Truly exquisite is his playing in this delicious Barcarolle of Tchaikovsky, alike in the perfect finish of the execution and the deep expressiveness with which the lovely music is charged.

THE AEOLIAN ORCHESTRA Puck's Minuet Herbert Howells

X-9571 10 3)- Conducted by Stanley Chapple

Berceuse Jarnefelt Conducted by Percy Fletcher

T HE first of these two numbers is a delightful early example from the pen of one of the cleverest of our younger British composers who, it may be noted in passing, has recently produced a composition so

startling and original in character that it actually provoked a staid Philharmonic audience to vocal protests ! But that was a "serious" work, in the shape of a pianoforte concerto, whereas this is only a vivacious trifle which the least learned music-lover can understand and enjoy without the smallest effort or mental reservation-especially when played so brilliantly -and it may be added reproduced so perfectly-as it has been in this case.

Jiirnefelt's well known and always-popular Berceuse comes out admirably also, thanks again to the finished playing of the Aeolian Orchestra-though this time, it will be noticed, under a different conductor, namely, Mr. Percy Fletcher, who divides the honours accordingly of this double-sided record with Mr. Stanley Chapple.

THE BAND OF H.M. LIFE GUARDS Under the direction of Lieut. H. Eldridge

Capriccio Italien, Op. 45 Parts I. & II. " 'chaikovsfy } K-05175 12" 4/6

T HIS is a very fine record of one of the most attractive of Tchaikov- sky's smaller orchestral works, in

which the famous Russian master paid eloquent tribute to his love of Italy by reproducing in a work of his own some of the more familiar characteristics of her national music. Both parts are full of interesting features all of which have been wonderfully reproduced - the brilliant instrumentation showing off most effectively the resources of the superb Guards Band, no less in the rich mellow quality of the general tone than in the delicacy and finish of the exe- cution

T HIS clever young comedienne, whose initial "Vocalion" recordings (No. X-9546), called forth such favourable

comment has now departed for Australia

where she is to play in "No, No, Nanette." Before leaving London. however, she was prevailed upon to pay another visit to our studios and the results are indicated in these two charming records which display again to perfection the bright pure quality of her

voice and her easy unforced vocal methods Both of the songs which she has chosen are of the lighter order, whose simple mission is to please, but they will probably prove none the less acceptable on this account to unexacting hearers if. indeed, shocking though it be to hint it! they do not find them all the more attractive for this very reason.

1"SWRO, nAm.f.

THE REVUE ORCHESTRANo, No, Nanette. Selection

Parts I. & II.N O-ON E-certainly no-one who follows the course of matters theatrical and musical in

London-will need to be told anything at this time of day concerning No, No,

Nanette!" which has long since established itself as one of the most conspicuous suc- cesses of the current season. But it may perhaps be just worth mentioning for the inform-

ation of those interested that the record herewith presented comprises a particularly good

selection from the charming music of the piece. Add that it has all been "put over" in the

most unexceptionable style by the very capable Revue Orchestra and no less effectively reproduced through the agency of the "Vocalion" recording department, and nothing further need be said to convince the discerning reader that this is eminently a record to be

obtained without delay.

AMONG an nnusally lively and attractive selection of dance records presented this month attention may be called

particularly to those made by Geoffrey Goodhart and His Orchestra, who, now record exclusively for "Vocalion." Those who have heard this fine band at the Piccadilly Hotel, will need no assurances as to their exceptional quality.

Other taking records, full of "pep" and go and every other lively ingredient, are those of the two American orchestras-Ben Selvin's and Ben Bernie s-while not a whit behind these in any respect are those of the fine London Band, directed by Emlyn Thomas, in popular numbers from "Katja" and "Rose-Marie."
