Decline The CoverageThirty years ago everyone in the purebred cattle business wasn’t in it to

improve the genetics of range bulls, or even to make a profit! I wondered if some even liked cattle at all! All they were after were the generous tax write-offs. Mostly they traded cattle; I’d buy $500,000 worth of cattle from you and get $50,000 off my taxes and then you’d buy half a million from me and do the same thing. They traded checks and cattle and in the process created $100,000 in tax savings. When Congress changed the tax laws the tax-breeders tripped over each other running for the exits.

Those taking advantage of the tax laws weren’t bad people or crooks, they were just good businessmen trying to keep the government from picking their pockets. But some innocent bystanders thought this false cattle economy was for real and they went to the sales and bought expensive cattle expecting that when it came time to have their first production sale these same tax-dodging cattlemen would return the favor and buy their cattle for the same outrageous prices they paid. I remember one greenhorn’s sale where less than ten people showed up and that included the caterer. After the auctioneer failed to receive one bid on the first five head he said if anyone had an animal they wanted to buy to just yell out the animal’s lot number and they’d bring that animal into the auction ring. You could have heard a cow chew her cud.

Times got so tough that when a breeder called to engage the services of an auctioneer or ring man you wondered if there’d be enough proceeds to cover the porta-potty vendor, let alone your fee. So an auctioneer friend of mine invented an ingenious method to get paid: he would buy an animal in the sale. That way if he didn’t get paid he wouldn’t pay for his purchase and would sell the animal to recoup his fee. Genius, I say. Pure genius.

I don’t know if this “payroll insurance” is legal but he never went to jail.I remembered this little trick when three of us were hired to work a charity

auction for homeless cats. The British fellow in charge was slimier than a garden snail and so I told my friends about “payroll insurance” and we all agreed to buy one lot.

You can imagine our surprise when the minute the auction was over the shyster handed each one of us a check “with a little something extra for our considerable time and talents.” We felt guilty for ever doubting his integrity and went ahead and paid for the auction lot we bought. To make a long story short, the difference between his check and ours was that ours was good and his wasn’t. It bounced higher than my Grandma’s pancakes! So we lost not only our fee, but also the money we spent on the auction lot. We were two time losers!

Making matters worse, we had a hard time dividing up the optional insurance we bought which was a “Luxurious Spa Package”. The auctioneer selected the face peel part of the package and after he was done his face looked like it had been attacked by an industrial strength belt sander using 80 grit sandpaper. It still hasn’t returned to its normal color now several years later.

My other buddy took the “wrap” part of the spa package and was expecting some sort of bean and meat combination wrapped in a tortilla; not to have his head wrapped in seaweed until he couldn’t breathe. To this day he still smells a little fishy.

As for me, I took the large basket of beauty products that were all part of an 18 day makeover to make me and my inner-self more beautiful. But after two weeks my wife wasn’t seeing any change so I gave the rest of the foul smelling creams to someone we didn’t like for Christmas.

I don’t know what’s worse, not having insurance and needing it, or having insurance and never using it. I suppose it depends on the type of insurance. While I’d never buy auction payroll insurance again, I do buy plenty of life insurance. And hope I’ll never have to use it.

Treasurer’s Report

March was a good month for registrations and transfers. The deficit between this year and last has slowly started to reduce. We still had a net loss of $1052.48 but we had some expenses for special promotions and maintenance of the webpage and

printing/mailing of the membership handbook. We also have some members that owe the Association small amounts of money for registrations, etc. Every little bit helps so if we could all get that paid it would be very helpful for our organization. I am anxious to see what the next few months bring for the APA financially.

Wow, we’re actually baling hay in Texas! Can you believe it? After last year no one wants to have to buy hay. We’ve had a decent spring already more rain than all of 2011. Cattle prices are high here right now so all is good for the moment. DNA, DNA, DNA what do I have to say to get pinzgauer breeders to request a form from Pfizer, pull a little tail hair, send it in with $27.50 and send me the results? People, it is not hard trust me. The biggest complaint I’ve heard since being President is that we don’t do anything to help all the breeders. We only help “show people.” Well, trust me, we have cut out a majority of the National Show budget in order to continue funding breed promotion. So with that in mind we need each of you breeders to do your part. DNA test your herd sire. Send the info to me. Simple. Do your part to help us move the breed forward. The breed standards have been unearthed and are included here and on the website. They have not been updated since 1991. Please take a few minutes to read over them and email your thoughts to me at [email protected]. The APA board is working hard to make sure you have everything you need to breed great Pinzgauer cattle. We have four spots opening on the board this year. We need nominations! Please send your nominations to Karen at the APA office. The Midwest Association is hard at work on the National Show. Why not make plans now to join us in Milwaukee? It will be a great time. The Midwest is gearing up for another adventurous show season. In June, our Juniors will have their

District Show in Seymour, Wisconsin in conjunction with the Valley Beef Show. The open District Show will be in August in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, Wisconsin. Then on to the National Pinzgauer Show in Conjunction with World Beef Expo in September

in West Allis, Wisconsin. The Midwest has been working hard to prepare for Nationals and hope you will find it a rewarding experience.

Pinzgauers will once again be represented at Farm Technology Days in the Beef tent in July.

The Midwest Juniors did a great job designing “all breed” t-shirts for a fund raiser. The shirts made their debut at Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin. while the group was working the Steak Trailer as a fund raiser in April. They are pretty cool! Check them out on Facebook!

Hope to see you all at Nationals! Remember...it is Wisconsin in September. Pack your shorts & your parka!

The Southwest is getting rain in most parts of the region and in turn helping pastures. Cattle sales

are up, and cattle prices are up in most of the region as compared to this time last year. Outlook on the future for the weather for us over the next 3 months is questionable

due to the drastic changes going on with the jet stream, but for now it is going in the right direction.

Bull Tab on web site – just the bulls pictures will be on this for people to look at, please send your bull pictures to the journal. We need old and new bulls.

International membership - $500 with no benefit to the APA, in past years we have sent them $100 as that’s all the money we had to send them.

New Budget – how many registrations have we done for the American Full blood? No one knew. Registrations have been down 11%. Where do we get the money to keep going? Bells & National show $1200, do we do away with this? Keep the show but leave the bells up to the regions to purchase if they want. If a region cannot purchase the bells they are to notify the APA board. Donna made a motion made to leave budget as is, depends on regions to put on national show with little help from the APA. The Junior GazetteOn April 21st the Midwest Pinzgauer Association

helped serve food to the large crowds at the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Steak Trailer during the Midwest Horse Fair in Madison, Wisconsin. Although it is fun to have everyone together, it is also a challenge to keep up with the crowd at times.

As summer approaches our to do list gets longer. The junior show in Seymour, Wisconsin at Valley Beef is less than a month away. Many juniors are already busy getting their cattle ready for the three day show. (June 1st through June 3rd) Don’t forget to sign up for the fitting contest Friday, June 1st at Valley Beef. The Fitting contest is a great way to teach juniors how to fit their own animals. The contest also is a way to get all the juniors from different breeds to work together. The groups are randomly selected, therefore you must all work together to accomplish the goal.

The royalty contest for the Midwest Pinzgauer Juniors started in April; the juniors who participated will get the results Saturday June 2nd after the open show at Valley Beef. Then, on Sunday June 3rd the new royalty will hand out the ribbons for the junior show.

Farm Technology Days will be held July 17th through July 19th. Our royalty will be there with the Pinzgauer breed to help answer any questions others might have about our breed.

In August, the Midwest Pinzgauer Association has the Midwest District show. The show will be held August 9th through 12th, at the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Having our district show at State Fair can be challenging at times, however it is wonderful to answer all the questions we get from the public.

This year the Midwest Pinzgauer Association will be holding the National Pinzgauer show during World Beef Expo, September 27th through 30th, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am looking forward to seeing everyone and their cattle.

INTRODUCTIONIf you are living on a few acres you may have the

resources to raise a few beef cattle.There are four different enterprises to consider.1. Cow calf enterprise: keeping a few mother cows

and raising calves from them. The calves normally would be weaned at about 6 months of age and weigh approximately 500 pounds.

2. Dairy beef enterprise: purchasing new born dairy calves and raising them until they weigh 300 to 500 pounds.

3. Feeder or stocker calf enterprise: purchasing calves that weigh between 400 and 500 pounds and feeding them until they weigh from 700 to 900 pounds. (Stockers are placed on pasture or on diets high in forage.)

4. Market beef enterprise: purchasing 700 to 900 pound calves and feeding them to market weight (1100 to 1200 pounds). The resources available will determine which of these enterprises is appropriate for your situation. It may be possible to use a combination of two or three of these enterprises. In this fact sheet we will discuss implementing a feeder or stocker enterprise and a market beef enterprise.

WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE?Location- One of the first things to consider is if

the enterprise is compatible with the community. Is the property zoned for large animal production? How many animals can you have? How will neighbors react to the project?

Land- Some acreages are suitable for pasture production. Is irrigation water available? When is the water available? What kind of an irrigation system is in place? Contact your irrigation company to find answers to these questions. A corral or dry lot must be available to keep the animals in when irrigating and when the pasture needs a rest from grazing. Corrals are also essential if finishing cattle on grain rations. If

there is adequate acreage you may consider farming and raising some of your own feed. Realize that it is expensive to own and maintain equipment. It may not be economically feasible to own equipment, although custom operators are an option. Forage Production and

Carrying Capacity- There are several factors that affect forage production in a pasture: season, rainfall, availability of irrigation water, soil conditions, soil fertility, plant varieties, and grazing management. In Utah, pastures are normally grazed from the first part of May through the end of September. Note that this is only a five month period. Nevertheless, during some years grazing will be available in April and October. The greatest forage production and quality on grass pastures usually occurs from May 15 until July 15. Cattle performance and carrying capacity are related to and affected by forage production and quality. Carrying capacity and cattle performance are not simple to predict and will change from month to month. For example, during the month of June you may be able to graze five, 500 pound calves per acre and have them gain two pounds per head per day. However, during the month of August you may only be able to graze three, 500 pound calves per acre and have them gain one pound per head per day. Contact your county Extension office for more information on pasture management.

The Human Resource - You and your family may gain a lot of satisfaction from raising a few cattle. Children can benefit from the added responsibility and families can be strengthened as they work together. However, the project will require a commitment of time. Even when cattle are on pasture they need to be observed daily to make sure that they have adequate feed and water and to assure that they are healthy.

Facilities - In the production of cattle on small acreages it is not necessary to provide more than the basic facilities. Some necessary facilities would be

a means of constraint (such as a headgate and side panel), trough or feeder for supplemental feeds, and proper fencing. There must also be available a clean and continual source of water to the animal Humane care of animals is legislated and must be adhered to so provide facilities that will accommodate animal welfare. These would include care for the animal in all aspects of its life, such as proper feed, handling facilities, shelter and the removal of any or all conditions which may inflict stress on the animal. If unsure of any of these principles consult with your Extension Agent or local veterinarian. When cattle need to be treated or handled it is necessary to restrain them for their safety and the safety of the people handling them. Commercially manufactured squeeze chutes offer excellent restraint, however, they are expensive. Plans are available from the Extension Service for building homemade chutes constructed of metal or lumber. These are generally adequate when handling a small number of cattle. Good fences are important to insure safety and good relationships with neighbors. Electric fences are useful for pasture management, and perimeter fences should be sufficiently strong, high nd tight to contain the animals. A four and a half foot fence made of woven wire, six strands of barbed wire, or a combination of the two is adequate. Corral fences should be at least five feet high and constructed of wood or metal. Woven wire and barbed wire are not recommended in areas where cattle are being crowded or handled Troughs are necessary if cattle are being fed grain. A feed bunk or commercially available feeder is necessary to minimize waste when cattle are fed hay in a confined area. Cattle do well in the cold of winter in Utah if they have a wind break and a dry place to bed down. Corrals tend to get wet and muddy in the winter and spring. Cattle either need some high dry ground or a shelter.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN PURCHASING ANIMALS

Condition - If you are purchasing cattle to put on pasture avoid cattle with excess fat as they gain poorly for the first month. Cattle should be healthy but lean and avoid cattle that may not have performed well elsewhere. You may be able to purchase them for less money but they probably won’t achieve an acceptable performance.

Health - Does the animal look healthy? Is it alert and bright eyed? Is its breathing normal and does it move about vigorously? Does it have a dull hair coat and look emaciated? What has it been vaccinated for and when?

Frame Size - Cattle with a small frame will finish at a light weight while cattle with a large frame will finish at a heavy weight. Cattle with different frame sizes require different feeding programs. Since you will want to manage your cattle as a group, purchase cattle that are uniform in frame size.

Breed - In most situations frame and conformation are more important than breed in relation to cattle performance. However, there are some things to consider. Holsteins will work well in a feeder or finishing enterprise. They require different management and sell in a different market category. Animals with a high percentage of Brahman genetics do poorly in cold winter conditions. The disposition of the cattle can be an important factor which can be a breed characteristic. Avoid cattle that are high-strung or aggressive.

SOURCESAs with any purchase it is important that you get

value for your money. If you are uncertain about how to purchase a beef animal then it would be best to deal with someone who is ethical and understands this side of the business. This could include a family member, friend, neighbor, local farmer or County Agent. The idea is to not go into a purchase with little or no information or background. Cattle can be purchased directly from beef producers with the price based on local market conditions. The local market is established primarily in commodity markets many miles away from where you live. These are then modified for each specific region of the country based on transportation costs to markets and local conditions. These local conditions could be such variables as abundance of feedstuffs, moisture conditions and supply and demand. Markets will change through the seasons and from year to year. Within Utah there are also livestock auction markets in certain municipalities. Here livestock producers bring their animals and exhibit them through an auction ring and sold to the highest bidder. It is a system where potential buyers and sellers are brought together and a fair price established. In order to determine what may be fair, however, the potential buyer must have some idea of local market conditions and a predetermined animal type that they wish to purchase. Market reports are provided on the radio and can be checked on a daily basis, along with local auction market prices on the Internet. Following the market for a couple of weeks before you purchase will help you insure that you are paying a fair price for your cattle. If you have done your homework it will

assist you in purchasing at a fair price whether you purchase from a local auction or an individual. Market prices are quoted on the basis of the weight and sex of the animal sold. Generally nothing is reported about the condition or quality of the animals.

The correct size for your enterprise - If you want stocker cattle to put on grass, calves that weigh less than 450 pounds perform poorly on grass pasture. If cattle weigh over 750 pounds in the spring, they should not be fed on pasture. It is recommended that they be placed in a confined situation and fed a higher proportion of concentrate feeds, such as barley or corn. Make sure you have animals that fit your enterprise.

MANAGING YOUR CATTLE ENTERPRISENutritional Management on PastureWhen cattle are on grass the amount of forage

consumed will determine how well they will perform, usually expressed in average daily gain (ADG). Growing beef cattle will consume approximately 2.5 percent of their body weight each day (dry matter pounds) depending on forage maturity and palatability. It requires approximately 8 to 10 pounds of roughage (dry matter) for every pound of gain. Thus a 600 pound growing calf consuming 15 pounds of dry matter may gain approximately 1.5 to 2.0 pounds each day (depending on forage quality). This level of ADG can be increased when a concentrate, such as barley or corn, is fed to the cattle on grass. This will also increase the number of animals that can be placed on a pasture. If concentrate is fed it should be fed at relatively low levels (2 to 4 pounds per day) in a feed trough while cattle are on pasture. The prices of the various commodities will dictate for any given year if this is economically advantageous. Vitamins and minerals must also be provided.

Nutritional Management in ConfinementIf cattle are confined, all nutrients required for

growth and production must be supplied. Normally growing cattle over 700 pounds will receive rations relatively high in concentrates to gain faster. The concentrate should be processed for maximum benefit to the animal. If possible it is best to mix all feedstuffs together and fed in a fence line bunk, however, forages can be fed separate from the concentrate. Supplements containing vitamins and minerals and perhaps additional protein (dependent on the amount of protein in the forage), should also be included at

manufacturers recommendations. The supplement can be obtained from any feed supply store. Check nutrient levels through feed analysis (see your County Agent) of your forage to determine the appropriate supplement.

A typical growing ration for a 650 pound steer gaining 2.5 pounds per day may contain the following (subject to nutrient analysis):

Alfalfa hay - 11 poundsRolled barley - 6 poundsSupplement - 1 pound (10 % protein with

recommended levels of vitamins and minerals)If grass hay is used the supplement should contain

14 to 16 % protein.An acclimation period is necessary to adapt the

animal to the concentrate. Feed the ration to appetite or as much as they will consume maintaining the forage to concentrate ratio.

Once growing cattle reach 800 pounds, more concentrate can be fed. An 800 pound steer will gain approximately 3.0 pounds per day and will consume approximately 20 pounds of dry matter. It is essential to increase the amount of grain in the ration slowly to avoid digestive upset.

Increase the concentrate .5 pounds per day until the ration is approximately 65 % concentrate, 30% roughage and 5 % supplement, fed 2 to 3 times per day.

Health ManagementCattle are susceptible to a variety of diseases. Good

planning and management, along with use of common vaccines and pharmaceuticals will usually enable your cattle to avoid most disease problems. Find a local veterinarian who includes cattle in their practice and consult with that practitioner about a herd health program, based on your type of enterprise, prior to your obtaining any cattle. If in doubt consult with your Extension Veterinarian who has a list of Utah certified veterinarians by area and specialty.

Bloat may cause sudden death of an affected animal. Avoid grazing cattle on lush alfalfa. Other plants may also cause problems for cattle so it would be wise to have your County Agent or veterinarian visit your pasture and corral area and determine any potential plant problems that may be present. It is important that any supplemental feeds used be free of mold and spoilage. Avoid sudden feed changes; make gradual changes (over 10-14 days), especially when

adding grain to the ration. Bloat may be considered a disease which can affect animals in confinement fed mixtures of alfalfa and concentrate. Symptoms are similar as well as treatment which should be discussed with a veterinarian.

Scours (diarrhea) is common in newborn calves and animals of a young age. Cows must receive adequate protein and energy during pregnancy, especially the last 60 days to provide immunity to disease for the newborn. The newborn calf must also receive colostrum (the first milk), within 1-6 hours of birth in order to develop immunity (antibodies) against disease. A clean environment is also essential for the cow just prior to and after calving. The basic treatment for scours is fluid and electrolytes to maintain hydration of the calf.

Respiratory Disease (pneumonia) stress, weather changes and infectious agents may all be involved and are most common in calves soon after weaning. Minimize stress at this time and provide protection from the elements, such as a shed and windbreak. Develop a vaccination program with your veterinarian including IBR (infectious bovine rhinotracheitis), PI3 (parainfluenza type 3), BRSV (bovine respiratory syncytial virus) and BVD (bovine virus diarrhea). A minimal program for respiratory disease would include an intra nasal vaccination with IBR and PI3 at 2-3 months of age and a vaccination at weaning containing a modified live virus (MLV) for IBR, PI3, BRSV, and BVD.

Clostridial Diseases: a group of related diseases may cause sudden death, especially in young, growing cattle. These diseases are Blackleg, Enterotoxemia, etc. Good vaccines are available and cattle should be vaccinated early in life with boosters at appropriate times. Your veterinarian can help you select the proper vaccine and outline a time schedule. This would include a 7-way Clostridial vaccine at 2-3 months of age and a second booster at weaning.

Parasite Control: when cattle are grazed on the same pastures every year, internal parasites may become a problem. In this situation deworming is needed to minimize parasite load and allow proper gains. Specific products to use and the time are critical considerations and depend on your grazing program. Your local veterinarian is best prepared to provide advice. External parasites of concern include lice, (common in winter) and horn flies (common in summer). Both need to be controlled, and several pesticides and methods of application are available.

General: injections of any type may cause lesions if injected into the muscles. All injections should be given subcutaneously (under the skin) when possible. Muscles in the neck can be used if it is necessary that intramuscular injections be given. DO NOT make injections into the hind quarters (rear legs or hip). Be sure to keep records of all treatments and always follow the withdrawal times as directed. The directions on the product will indicate how long the animal must be withheld from slaughter after use of the specific product. Always follow all directions on the label.

MARKETING YOUR PRODUCTIf you have a feeder or stocker enterprise your

product is one or more 700 to 900 pound calves. You may choose to keep the animals and feed them as a market cattle enterprise or if you do not have the desire or resources to do so, you will need to market them. If you only have a few cattle of this type your marketing options are limited. To ensure cattle are marketed optimally discuss your options with those experienced in the business and listen for market reports via newspaper or radio. You can sell them at a local auction or sell them by private treaty by advertising them in the paper, word of mouth or an add on bulletin boards at the local feed store or wherever cattlemen gather.

If you have a market cattle enterprise you can always have the finished product butchered for home consumption. You can, however, have them slaughtered by a custom packer and sell them to individuals cut and wrapped which is not always economical. Extension personnel can assist you in determining the economics of home-raised beef.

CONCLUSIONSThose interested in growing and raising beef

cattle on their acreage can find this very rewarding. Be informed, however, so that you do not become involved in an enterprise that you have little knowledge of or that is not economical. Consult with feed company personnel,

Extension staff, local veterinarians or beef producers. Raising animals can improve quality of life and provide great satisfaction and responsibility for families. Explore your options and then decide.

Q1. What books would you recommend for the average beef cattle breeder?

A. There are four very good books that I would recommend for most breeders and they are “Storey’s Guide to Raising Beef Cattle” and “Cattle Health Handbook” by Heather Smith Thomas and “Keeping Livestock Healthy by Dr. Bruce Haynes. All are available at most book stores and well worth the prices of around $15-25 and all are published by Storey Publishing Co. Another one that is really good but costs more is “Beef Cattle Science” by Ensminger and Perry and is published by Interstate Publishers, Inc., Danville, Illinois.

Q2. Does feeding cows in the evening cause more to calve in the daylight hours versus feeding the cows in the morning?

A. There have been several studies that show that indeed feeding later in the evening, beginning about two weeks prior to calving, actually increased the number calving during the daylight hours. In a large British study they showed that when cows were fed once in the morning only 57% were born during the day, whereas when fed during the late evening 79% calved during the daylight hours. Other studies have similar results. No one is sure why this happens but the best idea is that rumen motility studies indicate that the frequency of rumen contractions decreases a few hours before calving and begins to fall in the last two weeks prior to calving. It has been suggested that night time feeding causes intra-ruminal pressures to rise at night and decline during the day allowing for more cows to give birth in the daylight from 5 am to 5 pm.

Q3. Why do black cattle consistently bring more money than my beautiful Pinzgauer cattle?

A. The only answer I have is that Angus have taken lots of money and advertised their breed and now have most of the buyers convinced that they are better cattle and that the meat is better. I have had dinner following working on several of my Angus clients cattle and could hardly chew some of the steaks they offered me. When I eat my Pinzgauer steaks they are usually flavorable and tender. Studies thirty years ago showed that Angus and Pinzgauer cattle were very similar in tenderness and flavor, however, Angus used a big advertising program to publicize their breed and Pinzgauer did not. In fact, when I was a member of the APA board and we tried to advertise in major journals, which cost quite a bit of money, we got shot down by some of the members for spending the money to do so. Today, our breed is struggling for survival as a result. As I watched the cattle sales today the 500+ weight straight blacks are bringing $1.45-1.75 per hundredweight while the red and mixed cattle are bringing $1.20-1.45 per hundredweight.

Q4. How can I increase my profit when trying to market my Pinzgauer calves after weaning?

A. From my experience I found three ways to survive in the nearly forty years of raising Pinzgauer cattle. First, the best way is to get a name by showing your cattle and then selling good honest breeding stock which you are willing to stand behind (fig. 1). Second, feed out your cattle and sell grass fed organic beef, or grain fattened, whichever (fig. 2). You might want to give your prospective clients a few free samples first to prove that they are tasty and tender. Thirdly, if you sell your feeder steers and heifers when people want to buy a few to feed out on grass (April in the Northwestern United States) they will bring better prices as well.

Q5. Are all the questions you answer in this column from Pinzgauer breeders?

A. No, in fact many of them are from Angus breeders who are clients of mine. However, they were not the ones that asked me the previous two questions. Most of these breeders are long time Angus breeders and they should be proud of what their breed has accomplished because most other breeders try to copy

them and have actually bred most of their cattle to be black as well. Examples are the Limousin, Salers, Simmental and Maine Anjou to name a few. I have a client who breeds black Simmental and has an excellent market for his bulls. I also have Wagyu clients and they are very well excepted in Japan and in the USA as well for meat quality and heifer bulls. All have their good points but as I stated in a previous question the Angus breeders promoted their breed the best and we should all learn from their efforts because they are not that much better than Pinzgauer cattle when it comes to measuring any of the traits such as gentleness and carcass quality.

Q6. You wrote an article awhile ago about lupine poisoning and crooked calf. Is that what I am seeing when some of my calves have weak tendons that usually straighten out?

A. You are referring to the “Calving Abnormalities” article in the June, 2011 issue of the Journal. These are “crooked calves” seen in certain areas where lupine plants are prominent and those joints are fixed and do not bend. More common are contracted tendons seen in calves that are usually large and may be due to inadequate space in the uterus or a placental deficiency. A higher incidence is also seen in areas which have a copper deficiency. Most of these areas have high molybdenum in the soil which ties up copper so it can’t be utilized by the animal’s body. If you have a high incidence of contracted, or weak, tendons in new born calves have your vet take some blood samples, or liver biopsies, from the calves or if a dead calf they can submit samples to the lab from these as well. Make sure you have a proper mineral supplement suitable for your area out at all times.

Q7. What type of vaccine should I use on my cow herd each year?

A. A lot depends on whether you are buying and selling cattle or just keep a closed herd where you don’t move a lot of cattle. The minimum I would use if I were keeping a closed cow herd (don’t show cattle and take them away and bring them back home several times) would be two vaccinations with modified live infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), parainfluenza-3 (PI3), and bovine respiratory synctial (BRSV) viruses and a killed bovine virus diarrhea (BVD) virus types 1 & 2. These vaccines help prevent respiratory problems (fig. 3) and abortion. . If you are selling and buying some regularly, or showing cattle, then I would suggest vaccination every year with the respiratory viruses. The clostridial bacterins (7 or 8 way) are also good to give two times when they are young. Pasteurella and Hemophilus bacterins should be given to the younger animals at least two times as well. Generally most vets believe that modified live vaccines give better immunity than killed virus products but be careful giving pregnant cattle modified live vaccines unless they have had them previously. When in doubt ask your local veterinarian for their recommendations.

Q8. My wife asked me what I knew about pink slime in hamburger meat and I had to admit that I knew very little. So I had to seek out some advice on this issue?

A. It seems like some of the larger packers and 70% of the supermarkets are selling lean finely ground meat which has been treated with ammonium hydroxide to kill the pathogens like salmonella and E. coli and the resulting product looks like a pink slime. Several school lunch programs refused to buy anymore of the beef, however, there are experts on both sides of the controversy. Some say that it is entirely safe and others say that the meat packers are using finely ground scraps that normally would be discarded. Another item of controversy is “meat glue” or trans-glutaminase, which is an enzyme derived from beef and pork blood plasma. It is used in commercial food-processing to bond proteins together and improves the texture of sausage and hot dogs. It may also be used to bind meat parts into larger ones, such as steaks and loins. I would recommend that this is another way to sell your Pinzgauers for beef. The steak in figure 4 is from the market steer in

Q9. We have a problem with calf scours and lose a few calves every year. What recommendations do you have for us?

A. There are several things you can try to prevent the loss of calves and the spread of scours. First, make sure all cows and heifers have received scour vaccines containing Rota and Corona viruses, Clostridium perfringens type B & C and E. coli. The first-calf heifers need two doses before calving. Next would be to not feed cows hay on the ground unless it is a clean area; change the feeding area by moving bale feeders to clean ground on a regular basis; keep calf shelters clean and dry; group calves by age and separate older calves from the younger ones; isolate the sick calves from the healthy ones and treat with some of the newer antibiotics. Some of my clients have gone from spring calving to fall calving or else they start calving later when the cows go out on grass rather than during the typical winter time period.

Q10. We have had several cows that had been confirmed pregnant previously, then later show signs of estrus. We have taken several cows that we suspected were in heat and actually saw a bull mount one and follow several others as if they were in season. What is going on as we saw no signs of any fetus?

A. There have been quite a few cows called pregnant, and actually are pregnant, then show signs of estrus, especially between 2-6 months of gestation. Some will even allow a bull to mate with them and yet they are still pregnant. About 3-5% of cows that are pregnant will show signs of estrus and may actually stand to be mounted by a bull. That is why you should separate the bulls from the cows following a breeding season of about 60-90 days. Another reason to do so is because heifers, especially Pinzgauers, that mature early could get bred and have a calf before they are 16-18 months old. I have seen that also. In several cases I have seen owners of cattle think that a female may not be pregnant because they find a bunch of “horney” young bulls following them but never actual seeing the female stand to be mounted. So even though it is not impossible for a cow to lose a fetus and come back into heat, make sure you are certain first by having your veterinarian pregnancy test her, or send in a blood sample for diagnosis, before deciding to cull the cow. I’ll never forget a cow at the WSU Dairy who had to be artificially inseminated by a timed mating, without signs of estrus, three times. When she became pregnant they had me check her every time I was out because once she became pregnant she showed signs of estrus regularly and yet she remained pregnant and calved on time. The only thing I can say is maybe she did not read the reproductive physiology books, that I mentioned in question one, and so she was totally confused about what to do.
