It was a treat to the eyes and ears, to watch Mr. Sameep at ease while he played with different scales on his electric Sitar and kept us spell bound by effortlessly stretching different notes. The concert was followed by an interactive session with students and parents, who were eagerly waiting for a chat with the renowned musi- cian. On a lighter 'note', Mr. Sameep shared his wide experience in music and how he enjoys managing between his pas- sion and his IT profession. He also took time to patiently clarify certain doubts put forward by our students. It will remain an experience to cherish, for all music-lovers like me present in ' Ram Manch'. The grand finale of Bhavans GCC Spell Bee 2016 was held on 6th February, 2016 at Bhavan's 'Ram
Manch'. Indian Educational School Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan , Kuwait hosted the Grand Finale. The
program was simultaneously conducted at Indian Educational School, Kuwait, Private International
English School, Abu Dhabi, Modern International School, Oman, Al Saad Indian School Al Ain, and
Bahrain Indian School through Live Online Video Conferencing. Out of five categories, we bagged the
first position in three categories. The proud winners, to receive Rs.50,000/- each, are :
Master Fawaz Ahmed (Grade 3A) - First Position in CATEGORY – 2
Master Abhay Lejith (Grade 6D) - First Position in CATEGORY – 3
Master Harshith Kamal Chand (Grade 8D) - First Position in CATEGORY – 4

THE SPELL OF SPELLINGS
PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) and ePIRLS Assess-
ments, conducted by the International Assessment Section of ADEC, Abu
Dhabi, was held in our school on 22nd and 23rd Feb '16. Two sections from Grade 4
(4B and 4E, with a total of 53 participants) were selected, based on the performance
in the earlier tests conducted on campus for the students of Grade 4.
The PIRLS Test, held in two sessions, began at 8:30 am and ended at 11 am. Though
the total duration was for 2 hrs and 30 mts, each session was conducted for 40 mts,
with the remaining time given to students for preparation. An Observer was specifi-
cally deployed by the ADEC to oversee the test sessions, who was impressed by the
involvement shown by the participants throughout the period of assessment.

The ePIRLS Test (online assessment) was held on 23rd Feb '16. Since we had
two classes from Grade 4, the test was conducted in two sessions - from 8:30 to
11am for Grade 4B and from 12 noon to 2:30 pm for Grade 4E. Each student
was assigned a computer with a USB each. Similarly, each student was
provided with an ID and password as well. The Test Administrators Ms.
Neetha Gurudutt (Dept. of Science) and Ms. Chitra Devi (Dept. of Maths),
assisted by Ms. Lakshmi Anish (Dept. of IT), gave clear instructions to the par-
ticipants and also ensured smooth conduct of the online assessment. This test
too, had the observer from ADEC and was conducted in two sessions of 40 min-
utes each. The observer was more than happy to interact with the participants
who were quite thrilled by the first-of-

Annual Sports Day is the platform for children to showcase their
talents in sports. We had our 6th Annual Sports Day on 11th
Feb '16 at Officer’s Club, Mussafah. The Chief Guests were Dr.
Thakur Mulchandani, Principal - Sunrise English Private School
and Mr. Sahil, Head - Department of Physical Education, Sun-
rise English Private School. The occasion started with the UAE
National Anthem and Quran recitation followed by our school
choir. The march-past by the four houses, led by the school lead-
ers, exhibited discipline and coordination.
Swetha S Kumar, Senior Head Girl, welcomed the gathering.
The Sports Meet was declared open by Dr.Thakur Mulchandani,
which was followed by his inspirational speech.
Master Kani Prajith, Sports Captain, administered the solemn
oath. Cultural programmes including yoga and aerobics were
also performed. The inaugural function came to an end with
the Vote of Thanks by Apurva Atul, Sports Captain.
We had competitions in 100 mts, 200 mts, 400 mts, 800 mts,
Long Jump & Shot Put. The event closed with the much-
awaited 4 x 100 mts relay, that also formed the highlight of the
day. Sanskriti House bagged the overall championship with 235
points, followed by Yagna House with 163 points.

Science gives us tools of immense power which should be put to prolific use. To emphasise this, the de-
partment of Science conducted an exhibition in school on 21st Jan ‘16, from 10:00 am -01:00 pm. The
event witnessed many young enthusiastic Bhavanites who came out with innovative ideas. The de-
partment took this up as an initiative to promote the scientific attitude among young students.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Sooraj Ramachandran
(Director- Bhavans Middle East). The event had three catego-
ries, Group 1-5, 6-8 and 9, where, the students were asked to de-
sign working models, prepare experimental demonstrations or
still models. The projects included working models like holo-
grams, sound amplifier, water filtration model, hydroelectricity
generator; still models included echo-ranging, and nuclear fusion
reactor , and experiments included travelling water and vitamin
test, to name a few.
We ought to mention that most of the projects were done by students without any professional help. It
was also very visible that the students who visited the event were equally curious to learn more.
The judges were immensely surprised by the energy level and the innovation which stole the entire
show. The project that grabbed our attention would probably be the hydraulic arm which was crafted
using syringes and made use of Pascal's law which states that, when there is an increase in pressure at
any point in a confined fluid, there is an equal increase at every other point in the container. The 'arm'
was made to move by the pressure of the colored water filled in the syringes. In the model, muscular
energy was transferred to water as kinetic energy which was then used for pushing the arm. The model
excelled in proficiency and was exemplary. The way the student put the principle into effect was an
unblemished sight to cherish.
The judges and the Director were genuinely impressed by the wide array of scientific excellence. They
took time to survey each model and also listen to the various scientific explanations provided by
every student.
This exhibition was a great learning experience for both - students as well as teachers. It was, undoubt-
edly, a great success due to the combined effort of the students, teachers and our support staff.
We take this opportunity to thank each one of you for the tremendous support given.

Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), a registered non-profit organization established by leading academi-
cians that promotes scientific aptitude, conducted the 18th National Science Olympiad examinations for
the students of Grades 1 to 5, in our school on 5th Nov '15. 245 students eagerly participated in the 1st
level and the results were declared on 19 Jan '16. A total of 19 students from Grades 3 to 5 were qualified
for the 2nd level, which was held in our school on 14th Feb '16.
NATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

To help our students intensify their general knowledge and also to commemorate the 67th Republic
Day of India, the Department of Social Science conducted GK Quiz for the Primary Section,
the preliminary round of which was held on campus in January '16. Based on their scores in the pre-
liminary level, students were selected for the final round which took place on 15 Feb '16 in 'Ram
Manch'. It was a memorable and remarkable event for the students.
The Final Round of the GK Quiz was divided into two sections - one for the students of Grade 1 and
2, and the other for Grades 3 to 5. In the level for Grades 1 and 2, we had FIVE teams. Each team
was given the name of a flower. The competition had tough rounds such as Rapid Fire, Direct Ques-
tion, Visual, Jumble Round, Put Me in Order and Odd One Out. The unanswered questions were
passed to the audience who grabbed the opportunity to answer them with excitement
and enthusiasm. Team TULIP, comprising of Alphons Biju and Nived Shibu, emerged the Champi-
ons under the Grade 1 and 2 category.
Under the category for Grades 3 to 5 too, we had FIVE teams, with 3 members in each team (each
from grade 3, 4 and 5). The teams were given the names of planets. This category had five fascinating
and challenging rounds, namely, Direct Question, Audio Visual, Choose Your Topic, Buzzer Round
and Rapid Fire. Team EARTH (with Pranav Kiran 3G, Anna Ann 4 D and Aravind Sharath 5D)
was the Champion of the category.
The event, an initiative and collective effort of the Social Science Department, was received well
by the participants and audience alike.

'Matrix' club, the initiative of Maths Department, was given shape to inspire, spark the
imagination and to explore Maths - not just as a subject but its endless possibilities be-
yond. The club also aims to eliminate the fear of Maths in students and make
the learning of the subject easier and more interesting.
MATHLETICS ’16, the Math exhibition, was held at school on 18th Feb '16. The prime
objective of the event was to provide a wide platform for students to explore and experi-
ment the very subject, with lot more ease and confidence.
The exhibition was inaugurated by our Chairman Mr.N.K.Ramachandran Menon,
in the presence of Mr. Sooraj Ramachandran (Director), Mrs. Girija Baiju (Principal),
Ms. Jolly T.A (HoD-Maths), Mr.Sajeesh C.R (Jr. HoD - Maths) and few members from
the other departments.
Owing to the overwhelming response of participation, the event was spread wide occu-
pying two floors of the Netaji Block. As the participants were quite large in num-
ber, we took up the challenging task of providing them different time slot - Grade 1 and
2 exhibited their projects, on the first floor, from 9 to 10:30 am and Grades 3 to 9 had
their turn from 10 am onwards, on the second floor.
We had about 250 individual and group exhibits. It was incredibly exhilarating to real-
ise what great length each child would go to prove a mathematical equation graphically,
pictorially and scientifically by providing explanations for their experiments, for the cu-
rious and assessing audience to understand their concepts and ideas. The exhibi-
tion varied from algebraic expressions to Pythagorean theorems and from Archimedes
mechanics to 4D cubes. Every student was enthusiastic about the projects, as were the
parents who took their precious time off to visit and appreciate the exhibits - Astrolabe,
4D CUBE, Swirling Pyramid, Geometrical Pattern Art, Mathematical Riddles, to name
a few, were presented by the students of Grades 7 to 9, while Grades 3 to 6 exhibited
their talents in - a clock which showed the time no matter what time or place you are
in, a city made up of geometrical buildings, and a robot made from recycled waste.
Every exhibit, doubtlessly, was unique with each idea better than the other.
MATHLETICS ’16, inspiring critical thinking and innovation, that left everyone spell
bound, was a grand success.

Jour Français (The French Day)
Les étudiants de classe français de la classe 5 à 9 ont célébré la fête française des Rois le mois de jan-
vier. Ils ont fait des couronnes pour le roi et la reine. Un PPT sur la fête a été présenté aux étudiants.
Le roi et la Reine ont choisi en cachant un haricot dans la tasse de glace, bien que traditionnellement il
a été caché dans un galette. La personne qui trouve c'est couronnée le Roi et la Reine.
Nous avions neuf Rois et huit reines de chaque classe. Les étudiants ont aimé la fête et tous étaient
dans le suspense pour savoir qui sera le Roi et la Reine de classe française.
La Féte –EPIPHANY
Le 10 décembre 2015 pendant heures d'écoles les étudiants français de classe 5ème à 9ème organisé un programme éduca-tif sur la culture et la civilisation de la France sous les conseils de leur professeur français. L'événement commencé avec la chanson de prière en français suivi par l'hymne natio-nal français. Les programmes alors divers comme des chan-sons françaises, des jeux de rôle courts, interrogent en fran-çais où leurs compétences agissant étaient exposées sur scène par des étudiants français de la classe 5 à 9.
Comme la France est célèbre de la Nourriture, la Mode et le Sport. Les points culminant de l'événement étaient le
défilé de mode, des courses cyclistes lentes et des stands de nourriture levés par les étudiants français. Le Stand de
nourriture a montré (affiché) certaines des cuisines française délicieuses,qui sont savouré par des étudiants aussi
bien que des professeurs. Les étudiants ont créé un fonds du stand de nourriture pour les voyages à l'étranger. Les
courses cyclistes ont vu les participants de plus de 100 étudiants de ce qui seulement six est arrivé à la finale.
D'abord trois ont été choisi pour les Prix. Parmi la classe de Filles trois 1ères positions (postes) étaient Mlle Meg-
ha, Khushi et Ananya (la Classe 7A) et parmi les Garçons Raaif, Sakthi (la Classe 8C) et Anthony (la Classe 7C)
était les finalistes pour recevoir l'Or, des médailles d'argent et de Bronze. Le drapeau a été fait par notre Principal
Mme Girija Baiju et les annonces ont en français été faites par Arunesh, Nishayne et Fatima (la Classe 9C, 8A et
7A). La traduction à l'anglais a été faite par Sudiksha. (La Classe 8A) .

The most prestigious MAX STAR SCHOOL QUIZ CHALLENGE 2016 was held in Sheikh
Rashid Auditorium, Indian High School, Dubai on 20th Jan '16. Sixteen of our students
formed eight pairs to passionately participate in the highly challenging quiz.
Almost 200 schools from different Emirates reached the centre to compete and the partici-
pants were from Grades 7 to 9. Master Dhamin Fazalur of 8 E and Easwar Angadipuram Hari-
haran of 7 D were honoured with stardom in Individual Quizzing. Mr. Mohan Kapoor from
Mumbai conducted the quiz with ease and panache.

We at Bhavans strongly believe that community service is a part of life skills. Every individual has
the responsibility to serve the society. "Without community service, we would not have a strong quality
of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we grow and
develop."
Four of our boys, Suhirt Vijayabaskar, Shamil Sajim, Roshan Dinesh and Sachit Kothari of Grade
9C, participated in the second Sustainable Schools Initiative’s Cleanup Campaign 2015-2016, from 9:00
to 11:00 am, at Al Wathba Wetland Reserve on 10th Feb '16. It was organised jointly by the Abu
Dhabi Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi Education Council and Abu Dhabi Defence.
The campaign aims at protecting the environment from pollution and at the same time inculcate the im-
portance of keeping our surroundings clean. Who else can be chosen other than students - the future
leaders. It witnessed the participation of 105 students and teachers, and 69 members from various or-
ganisations (government and private) in Abu Dhabi. The result was, the removal of a whopping 1689 kg
of waste - 249 kg of plastic waste, 13 kg of wood waste, 131 kg of metal waste , 625.5 kg of glass
waste, 166 kg of paper waste and 505 kg of other waste.
