September, 2014 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

At Pioneer your child will get the personalized instruction he or she needs to be successful. Our school is one of the best in the state and the country. In fact, we rank in the top 16% of Washington state in combined cores for Reading, Math, Writing and Science. Our students make great academic gains throughout the year and they learn what they need to know to pass the state tests. On the national evaluation of our school, we are ranked even higher. The Federal Government focuses on the key skills of Reading and Math. Although half of our students speak a different language at home, 80% of our students passed the Reading MSP. With 94% of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students passing math, Pioneer students scored higher than any other elementary in Auburn. Most incredibly, there was no other school in the State of Washington who outscored Pioneer 5th grade students! 100 percent of Pioneer 5th grade students passed the Math MSP. All of these great outcomes go to show that students find the instruction and support they need to excel at Pioneer. Your child is our focus of attention! Look for your individual student scores in the mail soon. They will be sent home next week.

Aquí en Pioneer, los niños reciben instrucción personal para que tengan éxito. Nuestra escuela es una de las mejores en el estado y en el país. De hecho, estamos en 16 por ciento de las mejores escuelas en el estado de Washington en los programas de lectura, matemáticas, escritura, y ciencia. Nuestros estudiantes progresan mucho durante el año escolar y aprenden las cosas que necesitan saber para pasar los examines del estado.

En el nivel nacional, tenemos una clasificación aun mas alta. El Gobierno Federal se enfoca en las habilidades claves de lectura y matemáticas. Welcome to another great year at Pioneer Elementary School! ¡ Bienvenidos a otro gran año en la escuela primaria Pioneer!

My name is Karen DeGroot and I am your child’s school counselor. I tell your students that I have the coolest job in the whole school and I believe that I do. My most important job here is to get to know and build relationships with the students here at Pioneer. We work together on learning how to solve problems, how to make and keep friends, and how to keep ourselves safe at school and at home. Throughout the school year I will be out at recess and in their classrooms, working on what we’ve learned and helping them to put those things into action with their classmates.

Mi nombre es Karen DeGroot y soy la consejera de la escuela. Yo digo a los estudiantes que yo tengo el mejor trabajo en el mundo porque asi me siento. El trabajo mas importante que tengo aqui es conocer a los ninos y crear una buena relacion con ellos. Trabajamos juntos aprendiendo como resolver problemas, como ser un buen amigo o amiga, y como podemos mantener la seguridad entre todos tanto en la escuela como en la casa. Durante el ano escolar, yo voy a estar presente en las horas de recreo y en muchos de los salones de clase ensenando buenos habitos a los ninos y ayudando a los ninos ponerlos en practica con los otros ninos y personal.

Kelso’s Choices is the conflict management program that we use here at Pioneer. With the help of Kelso the frog we will be talking about the difference be-tween big and small problems and how to handle both kinds of problems at school using Kelso’s wheel of choices. Olweus (Ol va us) is our school wide bully prevention program. School-wide intervention means that every staff member at Pioneer is trained in this program and works along side our students to make Pioneer a bully-free school. During my classroom visits we will talk about what bullying is, what it’s not and what to do about it when your students are being bullied or are seeing it happen to their classmates.
