AmandaRogersistherecipientofThe2017RobertEvansInternshipEndowment.Amanda,adoublemajorinEconomicsandManagement,spentthesummerinClevelandinterningwithInsight2Profit,afast-growingpriceconsultingandtechnologyfirmservingdomesticandinternationalB2Bmanufacturers,distributorsandserviceproviders.TheRobertEvansInternshipEndowmentwassetupbyanalumnusseveralyearsagoandawards$5,000toonequalifiedstudentwhoparticipatesinasummerinternshipatafor-profitorganization,specificallyamajornationalorglobalorganization.The$5,000canbeusedforrelocation,travel,housing,meals,relatedequipmentpurchasesandotherlivingexpenses.

AspartoftheMcDonoughCenter’s30thAnniversarycelebrations,facultytookagroupofstudentsandalumnitothehighlandsofPeru.Theyspenttwoweeksexploringthecountry,whichincludedhikingtothesummitofMachuPicchuandvisitingthefloatingislandsofLakeTiticaca.MariettaCollegeProfessorsDaveBrown,RobertMcManusandDaveMcShaffreyledthetrip.ThistripfulfilledtheinternationalexperientialeducationrequirementfortheInternationalLeadershipStudiesMajor.

Cameron Dowiak ’19Biochemistry MajorPittsburgh, Pennsylvania

ForCameronDowiak,havingtheopportunitytospendthesummerworkinginalabatYaleUniversitywastheculminationofherownimpressivescientificbackgroundandahelpfulalumniconnection.ItwasBrendanAdkinson’16whoreachedouttoDr.KevinPate,McCoyProfessorofChemistry,toseeiftherewereanycurrentMariettastudentswhowouldbeagoodfittointerninthelabheworksinatYale.Thatlab,overseenbyDr.AlanAnticevic,ispartoftheClinicalNeuroscienceResearchUnitinYale’sDepartmentofPsychiatry.

Thoughherbackgroundworkingwithchildrenwhohavementaldisabilitiesandautismwaspreferredsincetheintern-assistedstudydealtwithautism,Cameronstillhadtogothroughallofthetraditionalstepsofapplyingforaninternship.

WhenCameronreflectsonherMariettaexperiences,sheisimpressedby“theaccesstoteachersandtheone-on-oneguidance.Everyoneheregoesaboveandbeyond.”

Jason Miller ’18Double Major: Chemistry and BiochemistryMinor: BiologySardis, Ohio

JasonchoseMariettaCollegebecauseofthestrongfacultyrelationshipsoffered.“Dr.PateintheChemistryDepartmentexpressedhowstrongthisconnectionwasbetweenstudentsandfacultyandthatconvincedmethatthiswasthebestplaceforme.”

JasonisthePastPresidentoftheChemistryClubandanactivememberoftheScholars’Community.Heiscurrentlyworkingonaresearchprojectthatistotallyself-designed.Heisstudyingtheeffectsofanestheticonhumanlungcells.Hebecameinterestedinthistopicduringajobshadowingexperiencewithananesthesiologist.Heislookingforwardtocontinuinghisresearchforhisseniorhonorscapstoneproject.JasonhopestoattendmedicalschooloranM.D./Ph.D.programandisopentomanydifferentareasofspecialty.

Michael Johnson ’18Biochemistry Major (graduating one year early)Charleston, West Virginia

Both parents and his grandmother graduated from Marietta College

Michaelparticipatedinasummer2017InvestigativeResearchprojectthatstemsfromaprojectbegunbyarecentMariettagraduate.Hestudiedmelanomacellsandlookingatpathwaystoreducecancercells.Inadditiontobeingbusywithhisresearch,MichaelpreparedtotaketheMCATduringthesummerof2017,andplanstopursueacareerinmedicaloncology.

“IhavesqueezedouteveryopportunityatMarietta.Theopportunitieshereareimpeccableandtheconnectionssovaluable.IknowthatIhavebecomeamorewell-roundedandmarketablecandidateformedicalschoolasaresultofthisstimulatingatmosphere.”

• 250studentsparticipatedinvolunteerservice,whichisapproximately25%ofthestudentbody.Pleasenote:thisnumberdoesNOTincludeathleticteamorGreekLifevolunteeractivities.

• 2720totalhoursofcommunityserviceweredonatedbystudentsinprogramsofferedthroughtheOfficeofCivicEngagement.

• Partnershipswithover47localcommunitypartnersintheMid-OhioValley,includingParkersburg,Belpre,WilliamstownandMarietta,occurredin2016-17.

TheOfficeofCivicEngagement,inpartnershipwithMariettaCollege’sOfficeofStudentLife,traveledtoWashington,D.C.,fromMarch11-16,2017withninestudentsforaweekofexperientialeducation,servicelearningandreflectioninthenation’scapitalaspartoftheAlternativeBreakprogram.Inadditiontohands-onserviceprojects,eachAlternativeBreaktripincludeseducationalcomponentssuchasvisitstomuseums,meetingswithlocalcommunitymembers,filmsandspeakers.Duringtheexperience,studentsalsocommittofullyengagingwithagroupoftheirpeersthroughactivitiessuchassharedpreparationofmeals,choresandcareofcommunitylivingspace,collectiveplanningoffreetimeactivities,andgroupdiscussionsabouttheirexperiences.Thethemeofthe2017springtripwasmarginalizedcommunities.PartneringwiththeWilliamPennHouseinWashington,D.C.,studentsparticipatedinseveralservice-learningprojectsduringtheweek.ThegrouptookawalkingtouroftheShawneighborhoodwithONEDC,anadvocacyorganizationworkingtobalanceeconomicdevelopmentwiththerightsoflongtimeresidents.Theyalsopackedwoundcarekitstobedistributedtohomelesspopulationsthroughhealthoutreachprograms,metwithvolunteerswhoprovideweeklyfreemealsinthecity’sparks,learnedaboutthelobbyingprocessandparticipatedinastudentlobbyingtraining,andplantedvegetablesinanurbanfarmwithDCUrbanGreens.ThegroupalsohadachancetotourtheU.S.CapitolandspendanafternoonattherecentlyopenedSmithsonianNationalMuseumofAfricanAmericanHistory.OtherhighlightsofthetripincludedavisittotheNationalArchivesandaneveningtourofmonuments.

She is the fifth person in her family to attend Marietta College

Annasaysshewillalwaysrememberherexperiencesvolunteering,conductinglabworkandbeinginvolvedinthetheatre.Shealsoenjoyedservingasamentorforothersciencemajors.Intermsofhercareerprogression,shebelievesthatherinternshipsattheHumaneSocietyofPinellasCountyandMissionAnimalHospitalinMinneapolisreallyinfluencedherdecisiontopursueveterinarymedicine.

Cierrawillalwaysrememberherexperiencesonthesoftballteam,whereshemadealotoffriendsandlearnedalotaboutlife.Inthesummerof2016,shecompletedaninternshipwiththeAkronRacers,whichallowedhertodevelopanimportantprofessionalnetwork.Duringhersenioryear,CierrawontheSeniorCapstoneAwardforAthleticTrainingforherresearchprojectonthe“EffectsofSleeponDivisionIIISoftballandBaseballPlayers.”Thisfall,shewillstartaone-yearinternshipasanathletictraineratSpartanburgMethodistCollegeandwillbeapplyingtoattendgraduateschoolinexercisesciencethefollowingyear.

Inthefallof2016,shestudiedabroadattheUniversityofReadinginEngland.Lastsummer,sheservedasaSearch&SocialMediaInternatMediavest/SPARKinNewYorkCity.Mandeewasoneof20studentsnationwidetoreceiveaVanceandBettyLeeStickellInternship,andwasselectedbyUrbanDecayinHuntingtonBeach,California,tointernforthecompany’ssocialmediaandmarketingteam.

AndrewtrulyvaluedhisexperienceswiththeOfficeofCivicEngagementandwillalwaysrememberhistwoAlternativeSpringBreaktripstoPineRidgereservation.Duringhissophomoreyear,heservedasatripleader,whichreallyhelpedbuildhisconfidenceanddesiretogetevenmoreinvolvedatMarietta.

HewentontoparticipateintheNextGenprogram,whereheservedontheboardofHarvestofHope,alocalnon-profitthathelpsredistributefoodtosheltersandavoidwastefromgroceries,etc.

AndrewisbackinVirginiaandworksforNatureSpecksPhotography,whichhostsexhibitsintheNationalHistoryMuseumandSmithsonian.Thecompanyalsosponsorsaninternationalphotographycompetitionandhasapublication.“TheliberalartsdegreefromMariettahashelpedpreparemeforthevarietyinherentinmycareer.”

JillcametoMariettathinkingthatshewouldpursueadegreeinPetroleumEngineering.However,herfirstsummerinternshipatCondevcoconvincedherthatthiswasNOTthebestmatchforherskillsandinterests.DuetotheliberalartsnatureofMariettaCollege,shewasabletoexploreavarietyofotherclassesandfoundthatshereallyenjoyedFinance.Duringthesummerofherjunioryear,JillinternedwithHallFinancialAdvisorsandwasgivenafull-timejobofferupongraduation.

GrowinguponafarminthewesternpartofWashingtonCounty,AshleyPayne’17(Watertown,Ohio)hasbeencaringforanimalsalmostherentirelife.

Onaparticulardaywhenshewasinjuniorhighschool,shenoticedoneofthefamilypigswassick.Fromthatmomenttherewasneveradoubtofhercareerpath.

“Iwantedtobeaveterinarian,”shesaid.

Payneisnotalone.She’soneofthreeMariettaCollegeBiochemistrystudentswhohavebeenacceptedintoavetschoolforthefall.PaynewillattendPurdueUniversity,whileRachelStahl’17(Oley,Pennsylvania)isgoingtoTheOhioStateUniversityandMeganBache’17(Westland,Michigan)willattendtheUniversityofMissouri.

Withjust30veterinaryschoolsintheU.S.,itcanbechallengingtogetintoaprogram—especiallyonafirstattempt.However,allthreestudentsbelievetheirexperiencesatMariettaplayedinaroleinhelpingthemgainadmission.

Stahlsaidshefeelsmorethanpreparedtotakeonthechallengesshe’llfaceatOhioStateinthefall.

“Ourclassesarerigorous,”shesaid.“Theprofessorsaren’tpushingyouthrough,theyarepushingyouinit.It’snotagraduatecourseload,buttherearedefinitelygraduateexpectations.ProfessorsatMariettawantyoutothriveinyourmajor.IrememberwhenIgotalabpaperbackandIgota7outof10.Theprofessorstoppedmeafterclassandsaid,‘IhopeIneverseethisfromyouagain.’Itwasn’tmean-spirited.Itwasmeanttoestablishexpectationsandpreparemeforthefuture.”

BachealsohadanopportunitytoassistinBiologyandBiochemistryclassesatMarietta—somethingshesaidimpressedthefacultyatboth

MissouriandMichiganStateduringherinterview.

“ItalkedaboutbeingaTAandhowIhadpresentedresearchattheAmericanChemicalSocietymeeting,”Bachesaid.“Theyaskedmeaboutmyresearch,butalsomyworkintheMcDonoughLeadershipprogram.ThisiswhatyouareabletodoatMariettathatyoucan’tdoatotherplaces.”

BacheandStahlareplanningtopresenttheirundergraduateresearchattheNationalAmericanChemicalSocietyMeetinginSanFranciscoinApril.Allthreestudentshavedevelopedafriendshipandtheycomparednotesastheyappliedandinterviewedatschools.

Dr.Parsons,whohasbeenknowntoholdsomeofthosespecialstudysessions,hasenjoyedhavingallthreestudentsinherclassesoverthepastfouryears.

“Ifeelthattheyhaveacquiredskillssuchascriticalthinking,problemsolvingandscientificresearchanalysis—tonameafew—throughactivelearningandinquirybasedexperiments,”Parsonssaid.“Theseskillsshouldservethemwellastheyprogressintheireducationandcareer.Iamproudtohavethemasstudentsandknowthattheywilldowellinvetschoolandbeyond.”
