How does one perform an effi cient quality control of the
quality control? Who counter-checks the test run if no-one
is there or many tests are performed simultaneously?
In combination with IPT’s specialized software IptDataLogging®
you are in command of a test manager which continuously
performs quality control, 24 hours, automatically monitors and
records the ongoing procedures.
The software supervises the correctness of the data through-
out the complete test duration, constantly, reports, dis-
plays events and, if requested, forwards you the information
per email or SMS. Due to this self-control and diagnostic, mal-
functions can be recognized quickly and unnecessary costs
caused by test repetitions can be minimized.

Density is one of the major physical properties that
characterize a PE compound.
The grade of the pipe or compound can be recognized
as following classifi cation:
Density infl uences directly the mass of a length and stiffness
of the pipe.
Density to ISO 1183Model No. H3002
0.910 < LDPE < 0.925 g / cm³
0.926 < MDPE < 0.940 g / cm³
0.941 < HDPE < 0.962 g / cm³

MFR to ISO 1133Model No. 1709
MFR indicates the fl ow behavior and viscosity of
PE compounds.
When the molecular weight and narrow distribution
increase, the MFR decreases.
n Considering pipe production process, the MFR range
for PE pipes shall be less than 0.7 gr / 10 min.
n The MFR value should not, after extrusion, differ from the
nominal mean given by the compound producer by more
than 20 %.
n For pipe grades the MRF 190 °C, 5 kg for HDPE and
190 °C, 2.16 kg for LDPE are used.

OIT to ISO 11357-6/EN 728Model No. H3003
The OIT indicates the content of antioxidant being
in a pipe compound.
The requirement to be fulfi lled is an induction time of
at least 20 min at the temperature of 200 °C.

Carbon Black Content to ISO 6964Model No. 1398
Carbon black is the only used pigment for black pipes.
The content is limited to 2.0 – 2.5 % in order to provide a
long term UV resistance and to keep the impact on mecha-
nical properties as low as possible.

Carbon Black and Pigment Dispersion to ISO 18553Model No. H3009/H3022
Due to high cohesive forces between the particles of carbon
black structure, if during the compounding process it is not
well mixed with PE (high shear domain), large sized carbon
black agglomerates can be detected. These agglomerates
cause decreasing of the resistance against UV and accelerate
the crack growth on the pipe.
Therefore, the standard recommends for dispersion the
grade of the compound be less or equal to note 3 and for
distribution be better than degree A.

Volatile Content to ISO 12099Model No. H3004
Depending on the effi ciency of Ziegler-Nata catalyst when
PE synthesizes, some inactivated solvents or catalysts might
be imprisoned in PE. This may cause the volatile materials to
come to the surface of the pipe during pipe producing and
cause numerous problems.
The volatile content shall not exceed 350 mg / kg after
1 hour evaporation in an oven at 105 °C.
H3004For more information go to www.iptnet.de
10
Because of its carbon black structure, PE compound is
capable of absorbing water.
If for any reason the raw materials are stored over a long
period of time, the water absorption may also increase and
this may cause some processing problems. These can for
instance be cavities or bubbles in the wall or on the surface
of the pipe.
The water content shall be not more than 300 mg / kg.

11
Heat Reversion Test to ISO 2505Model No. H3014 /1291
During this test, the samples are placed in an oven with hot
air circulation of (110 ± 2 °C) for at least 60 min (depending
upon the wall thickness of the pipe) and then the decrease of
the sample length as compared to the original length is
calculated. Following the thermal exposure and after cooling
down, the length of pipe sample will become shorter. This
could lead to the change in roundness of the installed pipes.
Therefore, having completed the test, the standard limit
of linear changes (approximately up to 3 %) will be
studied in the laboratory. The pipe shall show no de-
lamination, cracks or bubbles.

Internal Pressure Test to ISO 1167/ASTM D 1598Model No. 1720/1750–1760
The major test which can assure the pipes life time is the
hydrostatic pressure test. The test is used to examine a poly-
mer creep behaviour and is the basis on which the pressure
rating, required dimensions or anticipated service life of
pipes (over 50 years) can be determined.

Resistance to Rapid Crack Propagation to ISO 13477Model No. 1629/1671
The test simulates the phenomenon of RCP in plastic
pipes and measure the determination of arrest or pro-
pagation of an initiated crack. In pipelines RCP, caused
by a brittle crack, could undergo the length of several hund-
red meters almost at the sound of speed. This requires even
more awareness about RCP. The current EN / ISO standards
provide a maximum of 10 bar for natural gas and 25 bar for
potable water pipelines as operating pressure.
The determination of the required testing pressure is
based on the MOP (maximum operation pressure) and
would result in a testing pressure of only 4.2 bar for a
MOP of 10 bar.

Resistance to Slow Crack Growth to ISO 13479Model No. 1653
The crack growth rate of a pipe depends on the type of
polyethylene (PE 63 / PE 80 / PE 100) used. The Notched
Pipe Test is intended to simulate the growth of externally-
made notches that could occur on the fi eld. It may be
considered as a reference test seeing the number of norms
in which it is prescribed, and the number of years it has been
practiced. This standard specifi es a method to determine
the resistance to slow crack growth of polyolefi n pipes. The
test consist of a hydrostatic pressure test on a pipe with
machined longitudinal notches on the outside surface and
the result is expressed in terms of time to failure.
Considering for example PE 100, a test time of 165 hr,
at 80 °C, is required in most application norms.

Elongation at Breakto ISO 6259Model No. H3016
Tensile test is a shortened inspection method to deter-
mine the tensile properties, in particular the stress at yield
and elongation at break, of PE pipes. Occurred failures of PE
pipes are classifi ed as ductile or brittle, whereas the ideal be-
havior of PE pipes is ductile, for which a high force and travel
is required in order to obtain the required elongation range of
the dumbbells of over 350 %.
