How does one perform an effi cient quality control of the

quality control? Who counter-checks the test run if no-one

is there or many tests are performed simultaneously?

In combination with IPT’s specialized software IptDataLogging®

you are in command of a test manager which continuously

performs quality control, 24 hours, automatically monitors and

records the ongoing procedures.

The software supervises the correctness of the data through-

out the complete test duration, constantly, reports, dis-

plays events and, if requested, forwards you the information

per email or SMS. Due to this self-control and diagnostic, mal-

functions can be recognized quickly and unnecessary costs

caused by test repetitions can be minimized.

PE is soluble just in boiling xylene. But if the PE is cross-

linked, even the boiling xylene can not be able to solve it.

This specifi cation is used for the determination of

degree of crosslinking in PEX pipes. A sample of PEX-

AL-PEX pipe is placed in boiling xylene and the value of

crosslinking is determined based on the percentage of the

sample which remains insoluble in the xylene (PE material

which is not cross-linked is dissolved).

In order to reach the best physical and mechanical spe-

cifi cations for PEX-AL-PEX pipe, a degree of crosslin-

king of between 60 and 70 % (depending upon the type

of material) is required.

This procedure is utilized to prove that the adhesive

which is applied as an intermediate is capable of holding

materials (layers) together by surface attachment.

A PEX-AL-PEX pipe sample is inserted into the cutting device

and rotated to form the spiral cut. The cut goes through

the complete wall on one side of the pipe only. The spiral

cut continues along the pipe for a minimum distance along

the axis equal to fi ve times the outside diameter and then

straightened to a ribbon. After this, the sample can be

visually examined for signs of delamination.

This is a further test for determination of adherence

between the PEX layers and the aluminium.

The test procedure is as follows:

n With a tensile tester and a constant speed, the outer PEX

layer and the aluminium is peeled from the inner PEX layer.

n The pipe is held on a roller mechanism and the outside layers

are clamped to upper grips.

n After peeling, the outer layers can be examined visually for

delamination.

This test is performed to examine the tensile strength

of the pipe and the quality of the weld along the seam

of the aluminium layer.

The sample is a ring from the pipe which is mounted onto

2 steel rods which are separated at a constant speed until

failure and the maximum load is recorded. A failure should

not occur along the weld.

The major test which can assure the pipes life time is

the hydrostatic pressure test.

The test is used to examine a polymer creep behaviour

and is the basis on which the pressure rating, required di-

mensions or anticipated service life of pipes (over 20 years

at 80 °C) can be determined. These tests are performed at

temperatures between 82 °C and 95 °C, depending upon the

standards.

The hydrostatic pressure test is also performed on

PEX-AL-PEX Pipes at 110 °C over 8760 hr to examine

the thermal stability.

The pipe samples are conditioned in a controlled temperture

environment. A continuously increasing internal hydraulic

pressure is applied, either to failure or to a predetermi-

ned load. The predetermined pressure (or failure) must be

reached within 60 – 70 seconds. This test can supply fast

information on the pressure resistance of products under

the respective conditions.

Thermal Cycling Test to EN 12293Model No. 1769/1770

10

The most signifi cant quality test on hot and cold water

systems is thermal cycling. This test involves all parts

of the pipe assembly, such as pipes, fi ttings, joints and

welds and can confi rm the appropriate design of the

components, raw materials, manufacturing process and

installation procedure. The test shows if changes in tem-

perature will loosen mechanical joints due to differences in

the coeffi cient of thermal expansion between metal mecha-

nical fi ttings and the plastic pipes. For the total system 5000

thermal cycles are completed with the temperature changing

between 20 °C and 95 °C every 15 minutes, and with the

system under test having an internal pressure (depending

upon standard) maintained at max. 10 bar. The total system

passes the test if no leaks are detected.

The most signifi cant quality test on hot and cold water

systems is thermal cycling. This test involves all parts

Dynamic Pressure to EN 12295Model No. 1607–1609/1766

Hot and cold water pipe systems may be subjected to

pressure fl uctuations. The dynamic pressure test is used

to determine a performance capability under fl uctuations

within a pipe system.

According to EN 12 295 and DVGW 534 a test assembly

of pipes and fi ttings is subjected to internal water pressure

cycling between two positive pressure points. The pipe

assembly should be capable of withstanding the test

conditions without leakage. The EN standard requires

performing tests between 0.5 and 25 bar.

Vacuum Test to EN 12294Model No. 1715

Specifi es a method for testing the leak tightness under

vacuum of joints for thermoplastics piping systems. It is

applicable to piping systems based on thermoplastics

pipes intended to be used in hot and cold water pressure

applications.

A test assembly of pipes and fi ttings is subjected to a

partial vacuum over a defi ned period of time. After isola-

ting the sample from the vacuum source, a possible increase

of pressure in the sample is monitored and recorded over

a period of one hour. The pressure increase in the pipe

assembly shall be not greater then 0.05 bar.

Pull-Out Test to EN 712Model No. 1652

This standard specifi es a method for checking the ability

of assembled end-load bearing mechanical joints

(excluding fusion-welded joints) between fi ttings and

pressure pipes to withstand a longitudinal tensile force.

The assembly consisting of fi tting and pipe is subjected to

the calculated, constant pull-out force in a controlled tempe-

rature environment.

Leaktightness Test to EN 713Model No. 1730

This standard specifi es a method for checking the leak

tightness under internal hydrostatic pressure of assem-

bled mechanical joints (excluding fusion-welded joints)

between fi ttings and polyolefi n pressure pipes while

subjected to bending.

The sample (as shown in EN 713) is subjected to an internal

pressure which varies according to the application class, for

a period of one hour at 20 °C, during which no leakage is

allowed.
