Michael Judy Stephanie Stroud The Longest Ride is about falling in love, both present and past. In modern day North Carolina a Wake Forrest co-ed is out to get her bookworm friend, Sophia Danko (Britt Robertson), into a pair of cowboy boots to watch fetching young men attempt to ride large bucking bulls for a heart- pounding eight seconds. This is where the story truly begins, albeit corny, Sophia briefly meets a handsome bull rider named Luke Collins (Scott Eastwood) after he loses his cowboy hat while bull riding, of course Luke lets Sophia keep the hat. Later that night they meet up again at a local honky-tonk, where their relationship begins to blossom. It’s apparent early on that they both come from and are headed down different paths. Sophia is a big city girl whose plans are to return to the city shortly to begin an art career, while Luke is a country boy whose sole focus is to return to his glory days in the bull ring and save the family ranch. Luke and Sophia’s relationship quickly takes a turn when they happen upon a car accident involving Ira Levinson (Alan Alda) whom they rescue and take to the hospital. Sophia quickly becomes fascinated by Ira and his past, they strike up a relationship which leads to the telling of stories with flashbacks to a by-gone era of a young Ira (Jack Huston) and young girl named Ruth (Oona Chaplin) who immediately captures his heart. It is Ira and Ruth’s story intertwined with Sophia’s and Luke’s that makes this truly a romance. Rated PG-13 for love scenes, some partial nudity, and war and bull riding action. While The Longest Ride starts out a bit corny and the modern day romance is occasionally hard to take seriously, the love and lives of Ira and Ruth are what makes this movie worth seeing. Spirited and energetic hotelier, Sonny (Dev Patel), is back and has his sights set on an expansion to a nearby second property and also a new blushing bride, Sunaina (Tina Desai). His first hotel, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, has just one opening and this prompts the once naïve India native to open up The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel just down the dusty street. There were several flaws in this film, such as the trip in the beginning on Route 66 that ended in San Diego. Route 66 ends in Las Angeles. It's also on this trip, where Sonny begins to change in tone. In the first movie, Sonny was eager and naïve and pleasant and charming. This time, his ambitious nature is over-the-top and actually quite annoying. Despite the flaws, there are still plenty of laughs and loads of charm, and it's certainly a pleasure to see a welcomed response to the question "Is age a barrier to happiness?". The colorful scenes of India are absolutely breathtaking while the actors and the setting make this an enjoyable two hours. The Bollywood dance number at the end is sure to be a crowd pleaser as well.
