This cartridge was developed to fit a Personal Defense Weapon(PDW) conception. Mainly it features assault rifle cartridge'scombat abilities and penetration, within pistol cartridge's barrel

pressureand recoilpower. Itwaspublishedthat theSS190penetrates 48layers ofkevlar in200 mrange,fired fromthe P-90

submachine gun. In150 m

range bullet proofs standard US Army helmet and defeats targetcovered by it. Cartridge recoil power is threefold lower than thestandard NATO 5.56 x 45 mm (.223 Rem) cartridges.

The "Five-seveN" Self-loading Pistol is a new generation andconception weapon. Technically it is classified as an ordinarysubmachine gun but tactically it is a Personal Defense Weapon. Toremind: the PD Weapons are mainly used by drivers, staffpersonnel, artillery crew, and other second line soldiers that do not

take part in active combat actions and have no need in automaticor assault rifles as they use weapons mainly for the self defense.Earlier second line soldiers were armed with the submachine gunsthat featured range of effective fire in 50 - 200 meters. Howeverthe PDW conception differs from ordinary submachine gunconception. The main difference is that submachine guns arechambered for ordinary pistol cartridges. The PDW main idea itselfwas to develop a submachine gun size weapon with automatic riflefire characteristics as submachine guns are not effectivedefending from assault or automatic rifle armed enemies in a longranges. Furthermore compact weapons are necessary for second-line and supply soldiers as they are not used often.

The SS190 small-bore cartridge has a very high initial speed aswell as a sharp nose bullets. These both features provideextremely high penetration effect. However light bullet has onedisadvantages as it quickly looses it's initial speed. Furthermorelight cartridges weight allows to increase ammunition storage in60%.

Pistol automatic works on partly free lock recoil principle. Itexecutes single fire only. Weapon is completed with "double-action" hammer mechanism as standard. However it's modelintended for a special forces is completed with a "single-action"

mechanism. "Double-action" hammer makes weapon alwaysprepared to shoot but unfortunately it doesn't provide first

Page 3: Pistols 9

accurate shot andthe first round isintended just toprepare pistol forfurther accuratefire. This is thereason why there isno serious specialoperation force inthe world that uses"double-actiononly" type pistols.

Pistol has nomanual safeties instandard model. It'sslide and lock aremade from steel.Handle hasadjustable rear part. The FN "Five-seveN" is completed with somedifferent such rear parts so it fits almost every hand.

Mainly "Five-seveN" has no radical constructional designfeatures comparing with other pistols. Almost the only new featureis SS190 cartridge. Externally it only has new shape trigger guardlikely to the P-90. It allows to shoot when wearing gloves. Pistolcan be easily dismantled into 4 main parts. The "Five-seveN" usesstandard, tracer and subsonic speed bullets (used with soundsuppressor).

It has an opened fixed sight. Every "Five-seveN" can be fittedwith an underbarrel mounted laser pointer or a flashlight.

To sum it up "Fabrique Nationale" engineers designed a self-loading pistol with a really impressive bullet armor-piercing andpenetration abilities almost equal to an ordinary assault orautomatic rifle abilities in a short range distances. The "Five-seveN" became the first Personal Defense Weapon requirementsfitting pistol.

Advantages Extremely high penetration effect and long range of effective

fire. Powerful cartridge and also light cartridges weight. Highmagazine capacity and high practical rate of fire as well. Nomanual safeties. Quiet comfortable handling for a two rowmagazine. Compatible with a sound suppressor.

Disadvantages Probably the only disadvantage is it's "double-action only"

hammer mechanism.

The FN HI-Power Self-loading pistol is one of the best 9-mm"single-action" combat pistols of the world. It was designed by J.Browning in 1925. It's serial production began in 1935 in Belgiumnational weapon factory "Fabrique Nationale" (FN).

It is still produced under various names and is in service withBelgian Army and Police, United Kingdom Army, Israel Police and anumber of other countries with military and law enforcementagencies. It is one of the longest living pistols alongside with the

Colt M1911, TT and Walther PP.

Page 5: Pistols 9

The "High Power" passed Belgian Army trials in 1935 and wasadopted as Model 1935. Soon after that it was also adopted byBelgian Police and many other countries. This pistol is also knownas Browning HP 35, GP 35, FN HP, HI-Power and under otherdesignations.

Pistols automatic works on barrels short recoil principle with alocked barrel to slide. "High Power" executes only single fire andonly in "single-action" mode. Pistol has mechanic safety-lock.Originally it was placed from the left side only. However in modernversions since Mark II it is placed from the both sides of the slide.

Newer versions such as Mark II and recent Mark III featuremore modern fixed sights and polymer grips. The last mentionedmodel is also known as HP-SA model.

The "High Power" was the first military pistol with a large

capacity magazine. 13 rounds were arranged in two rows.

Pistol is quiet expensive and requires precise manufacturing tokeep reliability. To run behind I must mention that during thelatest years it's production and mechanics were simplified.

Alongside with the 9 x 19 mm (Para) model there was produced

model chambered for 7.65 mm pistol cartridge. Recently FN "HighPower" is produced in 10 x 21 mm (.40 S&W) model for civilmarket. Later mentioned model has a 10 round capacity magazineintended for self-defense.

Pistol has an opened fixed sight. Although some models areproduced with adjustable rear sight and enlarged front one formore accurate shooting. Some WW2 period weapons werecompleted with wooden holsters serving as removable stocks.

Pistols were (and still are) available with wooden grips and lanyardrings.

Page 6: Pistols 9

A number of clones and copies of "High Power" weremanufactured since it's appearance on weapons market tillrecently. Such are the Hungarian FEG 9, Bulgarian "Arcus" and lotsof others.

In 1980-ties FN developed version of the "High Power" with a"double-action" trigger. This model was named HP-DA. This pistolis recently produced by FN.

To sum it up FN "High Power" is a really perfect weapon. However threw years it became morally old and is slightly replacedby modern self-loading pistols.

It's well designed and recommended internal design is usedtoday developing modern combat pistols.

Advantages Good fire accuracy. Safety-lock placed from the each side of the

slide. Disadvantages

Quiet uncomfortable handling for person with a large hand. Noabilities to connect accessories. Not enough reliability in extremecnditions.

Self-loading Pistol CZ 110

 Caliber  9 mm

Cartridge  9 x 19 mm (Para) Dimensions and weight

Total weight (with empty magazine)  670 g Overall length 180 mm

Barrels length  98 mm

Fire characteristics Bullets initial speed  400 m/s Magazine capacity  13 rounds

Range of effective fire  50 m The CZ 110 Self-loading Pistol is a further development of the

CZ 100 Self-loading pistol. The new pistol was developed at theend of 1990 in Czech Republic by "Czechska Zbrojovka" company. It's development was caused by unsuccessful "double-action" onlyhammer mode design with the CZ 100. The new pistol ischambered for 9 x 19 mm (Para), 9 x 21 mm (IMI), and 10 x 21mm (.40S&W) cartridges. It is one of the first polymer framepistols made in Czech Republic.

The CZ 110 automatic is based on a barrel short recoil principle.Barrels locking principle is similar to the Browning "High Power" Self-loading Pistol. The only safety-lock is an automatic firing pin.Pistol is mostly intended for "double-action" usage. However thereis ability to use a "single-action" mode if required to make anaccurate first shot. It makes able to carry pistol with a cartridgeloaded in the barrel's channel. The CZ 110 has a barrel's channelload indicator. It is also fitted with a frame mounted decocker.

Pistol has a polymer frame and handle, however slide is madefrom steel. Trigger guard allows to execute fire from both hands.

Between the sights and over the extraction opening there is devicewhich is used to reload weapon using one hand by hooking it on

the harder surface as a belt and pushing the gun forward. The CZ 110 Self-loading Pistol is fed from two line magazines.

Basic model, chambered in 9 x 19 mm (Para) cartridges has a 13rounds capacity magazines, as well as the model chambered in 9 x

21 (IMI). Pistol chambered in .40 S&W cartridges has a 10 roundcapacity magazines. It is completed with a fixed sight. There is ability to adjust it in

horizontal plane only. It is an advantage, cause other pistols don'thave even this option.

Advantages Ability to use in "single-" or "double-action" modes both. Ability

to reload weapon comfortably using one hand only. Absence ofmanual safeties. Sights horizontal adjustment ability.

Disadvantages Uncomfortable pistol handle caused by two line magazine.

Fire characteristics Bullet initial speed  350 m/s Magazine capacity  10, 15, 19 rounds

Range of effective fire  50 m The CZ-G 2000 Self-loading Pistol was designed in 1999 by

Czech Republic "Arms Moravia" company. It is intended for lawenforcement force. This pistol is well made and performs itselfwonderfully. It is some kind of hybrid between the CZ-75 with it'sinternal mechanics and the Walther P99 with polymer frame andslide.

Although the pistol is named CZ-G 2000 it was not designed bya famous Czech arms producer - the "Czeska Zbrojovka" (CZ)company. Pistol's producer is "Arms Moravia" commercial companybased near Prague. This company since recently specialized in anancient rifle replicas production. However this company possessing

the most modern polymer production equipment decided todevelop a modern self-loading pistol on it's own risk. Pistol wasnamed CZ in fact that these initials aren't a trademark.

The CZ G 2000 Pistol was designed in two variants: chamberedfor 9 x 19 mm (Para) and 10 x 21 mm (.40 S&W) and in May 1999the CZ - G 2000 was shown on IDEX-99 international militaryequipment exhibition where it attempted interest of a number ofmilitary specialists. The first governmental order for this pistolcame from theNear East.

It'sautomaticsworks onlock's recoilwith a shortbarrels turnprinciple. Thisprinciple wasdesigned byJ.Browningand is oftenused in

modernpistols.Hammermechanism isused in "single-action" and "double-action" modes both. Triggerhas a push power in 2.4 kg with a "single-action" mode and 4.9with "double-action" accordingly. These specifications fitrequirements for service and self-defense weapons. Furthermorepush itself is quiet soft and gradual in both firing modes.Furthermore it can be slightly adjusted.

Pistol has an automatic safety-lock mounted in a firing pin. It

blocks hammer and releases it with only properly pushed trigger.Such safety-lock locks back after each shot. This feature prevents

Page 10: Pistols 9

8/13/2019 Pistols 9

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/pistols-9 10/25

self-fire when pistol is dropped. Additionally CZ-G 2000 isequipped with decocker switch. Pistol has no more manual safetiesexcept this firing pin.

It has a barrel load indication switch, mounted from the left side

only. There is a small disadvantage connected with it as thisswitch has small dimensions and it is hard to sense it at night or inextreme situation also finger can easily slip from it.

Pistol has a polymer body and slide. However it's mechanics isall steel. The G 2000 is very flat. This feature allows to draw itfaster from a holster and provides comfortable carrying both. It'sdimensions are 185 x 135 x 33 millimeters. It's shape does notprevent from usage wearing gloves. Also the trigger guard allowsto hold pistol from the both hands and it fits any kind of handsizes. There is one interesting detail as the frame has 27 grovesgrouped by three alongside the slide. This feature simplifiesunordinary reloading in extreme situation.

Magazines for G 2000 are manufactured by Italian company MECGAR. The 9 x 19 mm (Para) chambered model is fed from 15 and19 round capacity magazines and 10 x 21 (.40 S&W) model - 11and 15 (?) round magazines accordingly. Also there is ability touse a 10 round magazine that are mostly intended for self-defense.

The CZ-G 2000 has been tested under increased temperaturesand in temperatures below -40°C. It has been also tested in dirtyand wet conditions and without lubrication. During all the tests it

showed no troubles except some trigger returning failures under -40°C temperature. However this feature cannot be considered as aserious disadvantage.

Pistol chambered for .40S&W cartridge is intended for USAmarket as this cartridge is very popular in the Police Forces of theUSA as it'sman-stoppingandpenetrationeffect which iseven higherthan 11.43 х 23 (.45 ACP)cartridge's.

Pistol has anopened fixedsight fittedwith ahighlightpoints forquick aiming. However the efficiency of these three dots has not been provenyet. In addition the small size of the sights is uncomfortable foraccuracy shooting. By chance, the manufacturer did realize it andproposes to sportive shooters a target rear sight as an option with

Page 11: Pistols 9

8/13/2019 Pistols 9

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/pistols-9 11/25

a higher front sight better appropriate.

Pistol has an underbarrel accessory rail for laser pointer ortactical flashlight. It is also proposed with a longer barrel to installsilencer. Unfortunately connected sound suppressor covers front

and rear sights.

This pistol is quiet cheap comparing with famous companiesanalogues. This feature attracted worldwide attention to it as theCZ-G 2000 price is only $600. It is sold in Germany under theCUG-200 export name.

Advantages

Pistol is well made and has good fire accuracy and is reliable.

Low price, simple design. Light weight and ergonomic shapes. Italso features high magazine capacity. Ability to use accessories

and manual safeties. Disadvantages

Using "double-action" mechanism first shot is usually notaccurate and is suitable only for preparing pistol to fire as triggerrequires too hard power to be pushed. Magazine release buttonand barrel load indication switch have a too small dimensions.

Self-loading Pistol "Beretta" 92

Fire characteristics Bullets initial speed  390 m/s Practical rate of fire  40 rpm Magazine capacity  15 rounds

Sighting range  50 m "Beretta" 92 is one of the most popular pistol in the world. It's

serial production began in 1976. Comparing with earlier Italianpistols it is more powerful and impressive.

Pistol's automaticsworks on barrelsshort range recoilprinciple, but notlock's recoil principleused in less powerfulpistols. Barrel istightly connected withlock. Splittingmechanism is"double-action" type.

Trigger is opened.Safety-lock blockstrigger and lock'sframe.

Magazine is high capacity, two rows. Cartridge-case extractor atthe same time controls cartridges left. When magazine is emptylock stays at it's backward position.

Later modification "Beretta" 92S had improved safety lock'smechanism increasing pistols safety, cause earlier safety-lockwasn't so effective.

"Beretta's" 92S improved modification became 92SB which

Page 13: Pistols 9

8/13/2019 Pistols 9

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/pistols-9 13/25

mainly repeats base modification. Main differences are in safety-lock now placed from the both sides what made it comfortable toexecute fire from both hands. Magazine fixation button was placedunder triggers frame what allowed to push button with the samehand holding handle. This button could be placed from both sides.

The latest modification "Beretta" 92F in it's dimensions andconstruction is almost equal to 92SB. It has modified triggersframe allowing to comfortably hold pistol and execute fireincreasing weapon's stability. Barrel is chromed from the inside. This increases barrels service life and reliability but a bit decreasesfire accuracy. Pistol is coated by brunit (material equal to teflon).Self-loading pistol "Beretta" 92F is in service with US Army, NavyForces, Air Forces, coast guard units, French gendarmerie (police)forcesand anumber ofothercountriesarmament. Itis verypopularamongself-defense

weapons as well of it's effectivity and elegant design.

"Beretta" 92F in United States military named as M9 structureschanged well known pistol Colt M1911. Weapons advantages are:high muzzle energy (about 500 J), high bullets stopping effect, long range of effective fire and good fire accuracy.

Weapon's dismantling doesn't need additional instructions.Magazine has big capacity required for modern pistols. Pistol hasfixed sight.

However "Beretta" 92F has some disadvantages. Firstly it is highpistol weight and too big dimensions what makes it difficult tocarry unnoticed. Hard pushable trigger decreases first shot'saccuracy. Light alloys used in pistol body and frame decreasesweight but considerably decreases construction service life. Therehave been accidents when after 4 - 6 thousands shots lock's framewas breaking and injured marksman as well.

The "Heckler & Koch" P7 Self-loading Pistol was designed for lawenforcement agencies. It's serial production began in 1979. The P7became the most original pistol in it's class designed since 1927when was created first pistol with "double-action" type hammermechanism. The P7 is in service with some Police units inGermany.

The "Heckler& Koch"company is aGermanfamous for it'sunique designandunordinarytechnicalsolutionfirearms.

Pistolautomaticworks onpartly freelock recoil

principle with a gas delay system. One of the most unordinaryfeature is pistols cocking system integrated in the grip. Hammer iscocked only when grip is properly held. In other way hammer isdropped and pistol is safe. Such design decision madeunnecessary usage of manual safeties as a cocking leveler worksas an automatic safety-lock as well. The P7 Pistol has a "double-

action" only trigger mechanism and can be safely carried with aloaded round. This feature allows to increase pistol's combat loadby one round in extreme situation.

Cocking leveler requires quiet hard push power although evenlight power it is enough to hold it. When magazine is out of roundsand the slide locks in it's backward position it is enough to releasethe leveler and to push it once more to release the slide.

Cartridge-case extractor works as a barrel load indicator as well. When a roundis loaded theextractorprotrudesabove theslide and isboth visibleand can befelt byshooter'shand.

Gas delaysystem has

much incommon with

Page 16: Pistols 9

8/13/2019 Pistols 9

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/pistols-9 16/25

the HK MP-5 Submachine Gun. It uses pressure from the just firedcartridge and it's function is to reduce the recoil power and recoilimpact felt by the shooter. One more solution to minimize recoilpower became a low profile slide combined with pistol's low centerof gravity. These features considerably decrease shooters feltrecoil power and positively affect on fire accuracy.

The P7 is completed with a fixed to the frame polygonal riflingbarrel manufactured by cold hammer forging. Such feature hassome advantages over convenient rifled barrel such as slightlyimproved fire accuracy and bullet initial speed. Polygonal rifledbarrel also is easier cleaned and has increased service life. Despiteof it's short looking barrel the P7 has usual dimensions onecomparing with other pistols.

Pistol has an opened fixed sight. The rear sight is adjustable. The "Heckler & Koch" P7 Pistol is produced in the followingmodels: - The PSP Pistol (Polizei Seldstable Pistole or Police Self-loading

Pistol) was designed by "Heckler & Koch" since the 1971. The firstprototypes of the PSP Pistol appeared in 1976 and it's serialproduction began in 1979. After it's adoption by a number ofGerman police formations it was oficially renamed to Pistole 7 - HKP7. In 1981 the P7pistol was replaced inthe production line byit's improved model

P7 M8.

- The P7 M8 isrecently a base pistolmodel. However thereare only some minordifferences between itand the HK PSP. TheP7 M8 has a smallertrigger guard andEuropean-stylemagazine release inthe bottom of theframe.

- The P7 M10 is amodel intended forUSA market. Itappeared in 1991.Pistol is chambered for 10 x 21 mm (.40 S&W) cartridge. It issimilar to the base model except slightly larger dimensions. Therewere intentions to design the P7 chambered for 12.43 x 23 mm(.45 ACP) cartridge but unfortunately these efforts failed due tocomplicated in production and expensive recoil absorber.

- The P7 M13 pistol was designed in 1982. It is intended for

Page 17: Pistols 9

8/13/2019 Pistols 9

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/pistols-9 17/25

military or law enforcement forces only. It is similar to the P7 M8except a 13 round magazine.

- The P7 K3 has appearance almost identical to the P7 M8 andP7 M13 pistols. The main differences are in unique decreasing

recoil power hydraulic buffer. This pistol features good fire control.Basically it is chambered for 9 x 17 mm (.380 ACP) cartridges.Although it has removable barrel and can additionally be convertedto .22LR or 7.65 x 17 mm (.32 ACP) caliber cartridges using easy-to-install conversion kit. This feature provides economical practiceshooting. The K3 model has no gas delay system of it's lowerpower cartridges. This model is mostly intended for targetshooting and self-defense.

One more variant of the P7 Pistol is the EP7. It is manufacturedinGreeceEVOfactoryunderlicenseand isinservicewiththeGreecearmed

forces and police. The "Heckler & Koch" P7 Pistol had a really successful design

however in spite of it pistol is recently replaced in production lineby new USP series. The main reasons were morally outdateddesign developed more than 20 years ago and a high productionprice. The P7 costs approximately $1 100 - 1 300 depending frommodel however official "Heckler & Koch" retailers provide a lifetimewarranty for this pistol. The HK P7 Pistols are still in production.

Advantages Good fire accuracy for a compact pistol and quiet high

reliability. Comfortable handling (for 8 round magazine pistols)and compact dimensions. No manual safeties. Pistol is well madeand features very good balance. Light trigger push powercompared to ordinary "single-action" pistols. Also it features lowrecoil power determined by low positioned barrel.

Disadvantages Low magazine capacity. High price. Pistol requires precise care

and cleaning of it's unordinary internal design. After firing two orthree magazines weapon becomes so hot that it is impossible totouch slide.

from stainless steel. One of USP family feature is wide scale ofhammer mechanisms (9 types), including with or withoutautomatic safety-lock, self-action and double-action mechanismsor double-action only. Barrel, with 6 rifles, is fully hided in barrelsbox.

Pistol has opened fixed sight, intended for 80 m range. Lasersight or searchlight hardpoints are placed under the barrel.

In year 1994 there was presented "Compact" (USP P10)modification with smaller dimensions. In year 1995 - modification, chambered for .45 ACP and intended for USA weapon market.Later one more modification "Tactical", fitted with longer barrel, sound suppressor connection screw, and adjustable sight, wasdeveloped.

Along with combat modifications, there are developed some USPsport models. USP "Match" has barrel, fitted with polygon riflesand compensator, serving as a flame-hider as well. It increasesweapons stability and fire accuracy. Modification "Expert" has 152mm length barrel and increased till 18 rounds magazine capacity.

pistol family mass production began in 1994. The first variantknown as "Sigma 40" was chambered for 10-mm (.40 Auto)cartridges, however later developers presented pistols "Sigma 9"chambered for 9 x 19 mm (Para) and "Sigma 380" for 9 x 17 mm(Short/.380 ACP).

Pistol has a very similar internal design to a well known Austrianproduced "Glock" pistol family. Furthermore "Sigma" is evenascribed to "Glock" clones. The internal similarity was so obviousthat the "Glock" pistol producing company raised a lawsuit againstthe "Smith & Wesson" company. In conclusion it was forced to payan undisclosed sum in some millions of dollars to "Glock" forviolation of their patents. However the "Smith & Wesson" receivedthe rights to continue production of "Sigma" pistol family.

"Sigma's" automatic works on barrel short recoil principle. Barrellocking scheme was originally designed by J.Browning and onlyslightly modified by "Sigma" producers. Hammer mechanism is"double-action" type only consequently pistol has no externalmanual safeties. It executes only single fire. Comparing with theearly mentioned "Glock", new pistol has worse hammermechanism. One more disadvantage is safety-lock, placed on thebarrel's frame. Barrel has 6 rifles and is usually made fromstainless steel.

"Sigma" became the first "Smith & Wesson" company pistolmade from a polymer frame. This feature made very comfortablehandling and good balance. However frame is also made from thestainless or carbon steel with some pistol versions.

Pistol has anopened fixedsight.

In 1999"Smith &Wesson""Sigma"pistols wereimproved. Themaindifference is ashortenedbarrel andlock in 13mm. Otherimprovements include more comfortable grip, enlarged extractionopening and underbarrel accessory rail intended for tacticalsearchlights or laser pointers.

Advantages Comfortable handling and good balance. Large magazine

capacity. Low weight. "Double-action" type hammer mechanismallows to fire without any preparation. Compatible with

accessories. Disadvantages

Unsuccessful position of a safety-lock. Pistol fires in "double-

action" mode only. This feature significantly decreases hitprobability from the first shot.

The "Colt" M1911 Self-loading Pistol was designed in 1911 byJ.M.Browning. It entered service with the US Cavalry and Navy

fleet. After improvement in 1926 pistol got indexation M1911A1,and was adopted by US Army. It was the main US Army pistol tillthe year 1985. Now it is in service with Navy Seals, FBI Anti-Terrorist group and with more than 50 countries of the world.

It's history began in the beginning of XX century when famousweapon designer John M. Browning began to develop self-loadingpistol for "Colt" company. In the 1906 - 1907 US Army announcedtrials to replace it's service revolvers with new self-loading pistol.Army required the new pistol to have caliber of .45 inch soBrowning designed it's own cartridge and a new pistol chamberedfor it. In 1911 after extensive testing the new pistol and it'scartridge designed by Browning and produced by "Colt" wereadopted by US Cavalry as Model 1911.

In1985USMinistry ofDefensearrangedcompetition toequipUSArmywith

modern 9-mm pistols. Italian company's "Beretta" 92FS Self-loading Pistolchambered for 9 x 19 mm (Para) won this competition. It enteredservice in US Army as M9 Self-loading Pistol and replaced "Colt".However M1911 stays very popular for it's reliability, good fireaccuracy and extremely high penetration effect. It is almost theonly hardball bullet pistol, with sufficient penetration and man-stopping effect.

Improved model of the M1911 - the M1911A1 differs in widerfront sight, longer hammer spur, shorter trigger, simplified grip

panels, longer grip-safety spur and in some other insufficientdetails. During the World War II there were produced somemillions of Model 1911A1 in USA only.

"Colt" M1911 automatic works on barrel short recoil principle.Pistol executes only single fire. It is completed with "single-action"hammer mechanism, and opened hammer. It has two safetylocks: automatic, built in pistol grip which is turning off whenhandle is properly held, and manual switch, blocking trigger andlock.

Pistol has a range of effective fire in 100 m. Even after more

than 90 years it is a great result comparing with other modernpistols. "Colt" belongs to the most powerful pistol class with

Page 24: Pistols 9

greatest bullet penetration capabilities. There is probably nostandard bullet-proof vest or helmet, that would save person fromM1911 bullet in a short range.

The only disadvantages are great dimensions and weight and

rear small mechanism failures. It makes pistol uncomfortable tocarry and decrease shooter's maneuverability changing targets. One more disadvantage is that it has a bit low capacity magazinefor a modern pistol. Nowadays there is tendency to produce

pistols, fittedwith 15 or 20round holdingmagazines.

J.M.Browningdeveloped oneof the mostsuccessfulpistols whichis notoutdated evenafter thewhole century.Since 1911

this pistol was involved in almost every military conflict andbecame really legendary. It's technical design was so successfulthat it is still produced and is widely used. The "Colt" M1911A1together with it's compact models "Commander" and "Defender"are one of the most popular among self-loading pistols in USA.

Pistol has opened fixed sight. Colt" M1911A1 is a perfect combat weapon. It's popularity made

it as a base for mass copies, repeats and modifications. A numberof them differs from the original only in external trim, grip shape,or sight. Some variants are chambered for other caliber or have"double-action" type hammer mechanism.

Pistol's modification for civilian market is called "Colt

Government Model 1911". In 1929 the "Government" model was

introduced chambered for a new .38 Super Automatic cartridge. Itwas completed with a magazine holding 9 rounds. This modelchambered for .38 Super Automatic is still produced and is usedmostly for target shooting due to it's extreme accuracy.

During 1970 - 1983 "Colt" produced Series 70 model"Government" pistol that closely resembled original M1911A1.Since 1983 "Colt" manufactured Series 80 model "Government"pistol featuring added firing pin safety.

Earliermentioned"Commander"and"Defender"models arealsocommercialversions of theoriginal "Colt"M1911A1Pistol. Both ofthem have a

compact-size dimensions with shortened barrels and slides. "ColtCommander" is also available in such versions as "CombatCommander", "Lightweight Commander" and other. It featuresstandard size frame and grip with 7 round magazine chambered in.45 ACP, .38 Super Automatic, 9 mm Para. In 1972 US Army

adopted the M15 "General Officers" Model Pistol developed by"Rock Island Arsenal" which is very similar to "CombatCommander". It is a self-defense weapon for high level armyofficers.

"Colt Defender" is even more compact version of the originalM1911A1 Pistol. It features shorter grip and magazine holding 6rounds of .45 ACP. It an be also chambered for other cartridges. It's very similar model is "Colt Officers" Pistol.

Advantages Good fire accuracy, high penetration and man-stopping effect.

Pistol is reliable.

Disadvantages Low magazine capacity. Great weight and dimensions. Rear

small mechanism failures.
