The Research WorkspaceGuideline for working together in a virtual
research environment
Pitch for a Task group
November 2018
Ever more research is being conducted in a
virtual research environment
Individualresearch
2
Research with multiple partners in- or outside aninstitute
But:
Is it that simple? - Does the workplace comply with all policy requirements? - Are my data safe, can they be encrypted,
processed and shared?

Currently there are diverse initiatives in theNetherlands regarding Research Workspaces (i.a.)
Some preliminary work has already been undertaken (tooling) to facilitate a flying start:
* NFU Data4LifeSciences Personas (category researchers)- for use as interdisciplinary comparison
* LCRDM Toolkit: - under construction -
- Architecture framework- Service catalogue- Glossary
& 7 USE CASES
The LCRDM task group Research Workspace …
- Inspects the general outlines- Takes the analytical phase of research
as starting point - On the basis of existing inventories
compiles general criteria to which a research environment should conform in different types of research & data (1 A4)
- As helping hand for policy makers - For advice and assessment with regard
to choice & implementation
For the task group: • Make a list of objective criteria that a (proposed) VRE should
comply with (1 A4)*)• With as source the 7 use case lists• Assess the list with the practical field to identify ommissions• Add terms to the LCRDM glossary that refer to the virtual
research environment /research workspace/VRE/DRE • Publish the results on the LCRDM platform
*) connect the criteria with the underlying functions& according to infrastructure/technique
Why is this important?
• The LCRDM helps convert institutional initiatives into significant measures at a national level
• The guideline offers clarity and translates how technique is implemented according to the largest common denominator
• For those who have not yet started, make use of the informationcollected by this task group.
So yes: This really is a useful task !
Handy A-4 with objective criteria as guideline for testingand evaluating solutions for a virtual research environment – for both existing and future VREs
• Additions to terminologyin the LCRDM Glossary
• Presentation on the online LCRDM platform
Expected results:
Scope: On the basis of 7 available use cases (2017) – supplemented withseveral topical solutions – the criteria and conditions for a virtualresearch environment are listed in a clear and concise way.
We hereby focus on the analytical phase of research beingundertaken.
What would be helpful?• A task group of 5 – 7 people consisting of:
• Experts in the field of VRE technology and development
• Domain architects
• Policy makers: the people who will use the advice offeredare asked to assess the guidelines with regard to feasibility and legibility.
When must the task be completed?
Start circa mid-January (2019)Completion circa mid-March (2019)
(Yes, only two (2) months!)
Exact number of work hours to be determined by the task groupAn expected average of 2 hours per week
Who can I ask for more information?
