Pittsburgh Pirates History• Founded in 1887– Pittsburgh Alleghenys in Allegheny City• Separate from Pittsburgh

• Late 1870’s, early 1880’s the team was “independent” – Not affiliated with any organizations • Players were paid salaries• Run as a business organization

• Officially became the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1891– The way they picked up players from other teams

were described as “piratical” by league officials• Acquired second baseman Louis Bierbauer from the

Philadelphia Athletics

• Pirates didn’t play their first game in Pittsburgh until 1908
