PIU Library News
Marjorie Raess is a PIU Instructor of education teaching classes and overseeing the
education practicum. She is a long-time elementary school principal with the Guam
Department of Education. She brings knowledge, experience and passion to her classes.
It was an honor to talk about several Pacific Islands University’s library books. The five that I selected are shared below, not because I think they are the best books in the library, but rather because I value them for the reasons that I have stated. 1. Little Book of Christian Chamorro Prayers for Kids (with English Translations) edited by Mary Aflague. This book illustrates imagina-tively with color and simple drawings, the ab-stract concepts of the Lord’s Prayer and other prayers. Since most young children think concretely, this book can help them to better understand the meaning of the words they speak to God in prayer.
2. Teaching As Jesus Taught by Roy B. Zuck. This book gives a human analysis of Jesus spoken words as the Master Teacher who’s words came from God. Thus as an authoritative teacher the author states, “Jesus af-firmed the eternal, lasting nature of His words” (Matt. 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33). This past week while discussing the book’s Chapter 16 on storytelling, one of the many bright students in EDLS 305 said, “I wonder if Jesus ever used humor in His storytell-ing”.
3. Interpreting The Psalms (An Exegetical Handbook) by Mark D. Futato. As I audited a course taught by Dr. Bill Wood I became acquainted with this author who helped me to more fully understand these characteristics of the Psalms: types of writing; purpose; breath as related to human worship; and their beauty. While I had previously had the privilege of using them in worship, this experience was definitely enhanced through the use of this book.
4. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. This book relates in detail how people can analyze and review their life attitudes and their expression of these. It further speaks of how living according to principles makes the difference in one’s balance of production and production capability. As Christians we learn of God’s principles from the Bible and through the Holy Spirit’s guidance. This book can help us apply this knowledge in our daily lives.
5. Unveiling Islam by Ergun M. Caner and Emir F. Caner. I agree with this book’s re-view by Dr. James Merritt who stated, “This is a crucially important book, written by for-mer Muslims who share, in a loving fashion, the real differences between Islam and bib-lical Christianity and give information concerning this religion (of) which all Americans need to be informed.”
