May this year be filled with God’s grace and peace, and be a time for growth in your relationship with Jesus Christ. I want to reflect this month on Catholic education, its unique position in the heart of the Catholic Church, and urge you to consider different ways to support this gem. No, wait! It’s not just about money, so keep reading… One of the ironies in this country that had “freedom of religion” as an early core tenet was that all students in the public schools were required to read from a protestant bible and were exposed to teachings that were blatantly anti-Catholic. Recognizing the power of the school to influence young minds and hearts, families worked together with their pastors to create Catholic schools. Some of the giants of Catholic education—people like St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Rose Duschesne, St. Katherine Drexel, Archbishop John Carroll, St. John Neumann—toiled ceaselessly to create schools that were not only excellent in ac- ademic rigor, but more importantly, formed the hearts and souls of young people. As the country grew to the west, Catholic schools were at the front edge, educating and evangelizing minorities, students with disabilities, young ladies (unusual at the time), and children of slaves. When the Diocese of Lincoln was formed, the fervor for Catholic education came with the earliest bishops. ese men (bishops such as Bishop Bonacum, Bishop Kucera and Bishop Flavin) were stead- fast in their conviction that the future of the Church lies in the strength of its Catholic schools. ey were committed to building and supporting schools that were set up to be accessible to all Catholics who wished to avail themselves of a Catholic education. e presence of so many priests, religious, and devout lay faithful in our diocese is the fruit of this commitment to Catholic schools. What’s more, the future of our priests, religious and devout lay faithful depends on the continued presence of strong, sustainable schools. I worry that of late many of us have taken this precious jewel for granted. As educational expenses have outpaced charitable giving in local parishes, the material support for our Catholic schools has begun to erode. I believe that God is calling all of us to re-examine our commitment to Catholic educa- tion. I urge you to consider four possible ways to increase your support of our schools during this new year. e first one is most important: if you have fallen out of the habit of attending weekly Mass at your parish, please come back. I promise you that you will experience benefits that you couldn’t even imagine. e Lord will richly bless you and your efforts to worship him as part of your parish commu- nity. Second, consider an increase in your parish tithing. Our diocese has a long history of the parish assuming the lion’s share of the per pupil costs of education. Other dioceses around the country have gone to a “fee-for-service” model that has resulted in astronomical tuition costs. It is the people in the pew who have the greatest power to sustain our schools. Everyone giving a little bit, each according to his own means, is the rock on which we can continue to build our school system. ird, take action to support efforts to secure public funding sources. Occasionally the diocese will send out action alerts asking our parents to contact a state or federal representative. Usually it is as simple as pressing a few buttons—please take those opportunities as they come along. Finally, please make our Catholic schools part of your regular prayer. I know God will continue to bless us and provide for us, but I believe He asks all of us to do our part in accomplishing His will. There have been a lot of stories in the news lately about sexual harassment. Most of those stories have focused on issues in Holly-wood and with public figures but violence and harassment happen regularly to teens as well. There are several signs that Counselors and parents can look for that can help teens recognize that they might be with an abusive person. Some of those signs include:n Some students romanticize jealousy and think that their partner smothering them is a loving thing. In many cases it is a sign that the relationship can become toxic.n If their partner puts limits on what they can and can’t wear this can be a sign of a smothering relationshipn Do they put limits on who the student can and can’t be friends with?

n Do they tell them they can’t talk to anyone of the opposite sex (even long time friends)?n Do they constantly text asking where they are, who they are with and what they are doing?n Do they want passwords to all the student’s accounts and phone so they can see all their communications? These alone don’t mean the person is prone to violence but they do show signs of insecurity and the possibility that the person who the student is dating is too controlling, which can turn to violence. The main thing you as a parent can do is to be alert and make sure your students know they have someone they can talk to in school if they have an issue.Source - http://www.linkforcounselors.com/teach-students-warning-sign-dating-violence-early/

1. College admissions and employers do read your online profiles and they do make decisions based upon information they find out about you online. In fact, colleges will make decisions based upon many forms of questionable involvement.

2. Educators and parents do see, read, and hear about your online escapades, even though you go to great lengths to hide them.

3. Educate yourself on the basics. What does Digital Citizenship mean to you? What should it mean? These are important lessons that students can research on their own. However, wouldn’t it be fantastic to offer some of this education in our schools as well?

4. Create a profile that says simple, non-specific details about yourself, but that is still identifiably you.

5. Create separate accounts so you can consistently remain pos-itive in public online spaces. If you have already developed a full identity online, you don’t necessarily need to “scrub it clean”, but it would make sense to create a professional identity, and limit the

amount of personal information you share publicly.

6. Learn from others. Find teenagers, professionals, or reputation resources who are doing things the right way and model your online presence in a similar manner.

7. Keep private information private.

8. The Golden Rule. Never has this rule applied more than to how you speak to others online. Treat others as you would like to be treat-ed.

9. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake, but be mindful that being careless, too open, too trusting, and realize spending too much time on the Internet, has real consequences.

10. Build your own positive image and brand yourself in a great way. n Source: Information from http://www.teachhub.com/10-things-your-students-should-know-about-their-digital-footprints

Things Your Students Should Know About Their Digital Footprints10

Questions to ask yourselfnHave you reviewed your notes/what you learned in class today? Can you summarize what you learned? If not, use your thinking maps and summarize. Preparation for tests and quizzes begins after the first day of class. nDo you understand? Can you answer the objectives the teacher provided? nCan you use the term in a sentence and explain the importance? nDo you really understand, or are you just regurgitating what the teacher said? nQuestioning: Did you ask clarifying questions? What questions

do you have for the teacher the next day? Make note of them and get them answered.

Daily Studying Tips nDo your homework. nTalk to your teacher. Ask questions during class or meet with your teacher before or after school if you need additional assistance. nTeach someone else (this will help you realize what information you really don’t understand). nIf you are absent, take the time to learn what you missed. Check in with your teacher upon your return to class.
