This month's pixel walk is taken in a recreationof Bikini Atoll , a virtual 3d space owned byDavid Wolfe . This historically significant exnaval base can be found within the virtualworld of InWorldz.http://inworldz.com/David's vision is to gather together a group ofmodellers, role players, historians, and otherinterested parties to recreate key events of thesecond world war.He chose Inworldz as a venue as virtual landprices are very reasonable, and with its growingpopulation , this popular online venue has thepotential to become a significant gatheringpoint for role playing groups.As a keen modeller Wolfe is revelling in thespace available to work on much larger projects,and Inworldz' architecture allows him tomanoeuvre very large vessels on communityshared oceans.Sim crossings have always been problematical in

virtual world spaces, and David is delighted thathe can steer his 1,000 prim ships across simboundaries without too many problems.With aircraft carriers, and full scale warships allable to be crewed and sailed across virtual seas,the potential for battle scenarios has expandedbeyond anything he could have imagined inSecond Life .While some features, such as missile launchers,must wait until grid -wide physics is

implemented, the keen historian is focusing onbuilding intricate and full scale recreations ofUS navy vessels, and gathering together expertsin fields such as coding, to work on bringingthe past to life .In addition to combat recreation , the group hasa wider remit to include any aspects of wartimelife, depending on the interests of currentmembers.

David hopes that by taking part in recreations,members will gain a unique insight into thesignificant events that shaped our world as itis today.Potential group members can be involved atany level , from experienced role players andwar gamers, to those who are simply interestedin a period of history which changed andreshaped the world in ways we are stilldiscovering.The group is open to male and female alike!All nationalities are welcome, in fact Davidwould like to welcome anyone who would liketo have fun and would enjoy taking a tripthrough time!

Bikini Atoll Nuclear Test Site(Marshall Islands)In the wake of World War II, in amove closely related to thebeginnings of the Cold War, theUnited States of America decided toresume nuclear testing in the PacificOcean, on Bikini Atoll in theMarshall archipelago. After thedisplacement of the localinhabitants, 67 nuclear tests werecarried out from 1946 to 1958,including the explosion of the firstH-bomb (1952).Bikini Atoll has conserved directtangible evidence that is highlysignificant in conveying the power ofthe nuclear tests, i.e. the sunkenships sent to the bottom of thelagoon by the tests in 1946 and thegigantic Bravo crater. Equivalent to

7,000 times the force of theHiroshima bomb, the tests had majorconsequences on the geology andnatural environment of Bikini Atolland on the health of those who wereexposed to radiation.Through its history, the atollsymbolises the dawn of the nuclearage, despite its paradoxical imageof peace and of earthly paradise.This is the first site from theMarshall Islands to be inscribed onthe World Heritage List.

The design was based on the Nissen hut developedby the British during World War I. The name comes fromtheir site of first manufacture, Quonset Point, at theDavisville Naval Construction Battalion Center inDavisville (Wikipedia)Docked in front of you you will see "N3 - S - A1 - D WW2single stack Ship"Type N3-S ships were a Maritime Commission small coastalcargo ship design to meet urgent World War II shippingneeds with first of 109 N3, both steam and diesel , typehulls delivered in December of 1942 (Wikipedia)

Turn and walk along shoreline roughly northhttp://places.inworldz.com/Bikini%20Atoll/138/203/22Viewpoint looking SW - USS LangleyUSS Langley (CVL-27) was an 11,000-ton Independence-class aircraft carrier that served the United States Navy from1943 to 1947, and French Navy as the La Fayette from 1951to 1963. Named for Samuel Pierpont Langley, Americanscientist and aviation pioneer, Langley received nine battlestars for World War II service . CVL-27 carried on the nameand tradition of USS Langley (CV-1), the first US Navyaircraft carrier, which had been sunk on 27 Feb 1942
