WELCOME!

How do you experience the arts? According to researcher Alan S. Brown and the University of Pennsylvania’s Social Impact of the Arts Project, there are five modes of arts participation.

Are you inventive and create your own art, as in painting or writing? Are you interpretive, participating in creative acts of self-expression based on the art of others, such as by acting or singing? Perhaps you curate your own art experience by, for example, purchasing art for your home or designing your own art-filled night out. Or maybe you’re simply an observer of art, taking it in wherever and whenever you come upon it. Think you don’t participate in art? Not so fast! Even if you don’t know it, you’re participating art every day because art is all around us – it’s called ambient participation.

This season at Place des Arts, you can engage in all modes of arts participation. In our inventive faculty concert L’Inspiration: French Classics by Request, you can curate the concert playlist by choosing which scores the musicians perform in our online survey (see page 6 for details).

Our new pARTy@PdA events crank up the adult fun! Come and create and interpret art while enjoying food and drink in the company of your friends or even your dog! (Check out PAWcasso on page 7.) Our popular Family Day at PdA is back, with six opportunities to be observational, inventive and interpretive as a family, and through two Just for Teens activities, 13-17 year olds can come together to invent, interpret, curate and observe art!

Take a look through our guide and decide how you want to participate in the arts this season!

Learn about the life of Robert Schumann through his music! Pianist Barry Tan, with guests Ben Goheen, Peter Ing and Will Chen, will perform three Schumann works from different periods in the composer’s life, while recounting fascinating episodes that are representative of each phase.

Hear about Schumann’s love life with his wife, the great pianist Clara Schumann, and learn about his struggles coping with depression and mental illness while enjoying Fantasiestucke (Fantasy Pieces), Op.12 (Early Period), Piano Quartet in Eb Major, Op.47 (Middle Period) and Waldszenen (Forest Scenes), Op. 82 (Late Period).

Join us for our annual celebration of Scotland’s National Bard, Robbie Burns! Fiddler and faculty member Rosie Carver with Celtic band Blackthorn and a special guest piper feature the musical traditions of Scotland with a special focus on Burns’ songs and poems. Heart-wrenching airs and ballads, songs with rousing choruses and lively jigs and reels are brought to life with Blackthorn’s luscious harmonies and complex instrumentation.

The musical celebrations start at 7:30pm, or come early and enjoy a delicious Scottish-inspired, pre-show supper served at 6pm. A piping-in of the Haggis, followed by a recitation of Burns’ Address to a Haggis, round out the long-standing traditions that are a must at any Robbie Burn’s birthday celebration.

Haggis will be served at intermission for those who feel inclined to indulge in such fine Scottish fare—Och Aye!

At the turn of the 20th Century, France was the epicentre for musical innovation as artists sought to break away from the time-honoured traditions of the past. In this pursuit, composers discovered sounds that had never before been heard; Debussy went so far as to arrange the piano works of Satie for orchestra. Through a similar process, Geeta, Stefan and Barry will present new and unique arrangements of the favourite French music that you choose through our survey process. For an added delight, the trio will premiere a new piece by Stefan Nazarevich himself.
