PERGOLAS

GLUE LAMINATED POSTS

Although more expensive, laminated posts are stronger and stay straighter than solid wood posts. They are available in a number of different lengths and can be purchased natural or pre-primed.

RAILS OR BOARDS

Rails or boards come in standard 150mm, 200mm, 250mm and 300mm x 50mm sizes and can be used to achieve different effects. They can be stained or painted to create a modern look.

SOLID WOOD POSTS

Solid wood gauged posts are taken out of the sap wood of a tree and although some movement is expected the posts usually stay relatively straight. The posts are treated to H4 or 5 and are very strong and durable.

New Zealanders have always loved the great outdoors, and a lot more effort is going to designing the ‘Outdoor Room’. A stylish pergola can enable your deck to become an extension of your in-door living space.

FASTENING DURABILITY SELECTION

FOR TIMBER DECK CONSTRUCTIONWhen designing and building your new timber deck, it’s important that the right types of steel brackets and timber connectors are used in the structure of the deck.

BOWMAC brackets are structural fixings that support the deck and connect timber to timber and timber to concrete. LUMBERLOK fixings are plates and straps used within the deck structure to tie and brace the deck.

Both are available from PlaceMakers in either hot-dipped galvanised steel or stainless steel. Galv is a protective coating of zinc that helps protect the steel fixings from rust and corrosion, where stainless is more corrosion resistant and durable than galv.

Below is a durability chart to assist you in selecting the right type of fastening dependant on where you are building your deck. 500M off the coastline, stainless fittings should be used, further inland is a mixture of stainless and galv.

TIMBER FENCING - CUSTOM

CEDAR PALINGS

Cedar is a long lasting stable timber. Having already proven itself as weather boards, there are a number of profiles that can be turned into stunning modern looking fences. Custom profiles and sizing available on request.

JENKIN’S FENCE SYSTEM

A durable and hard wearing fence that also had its origins in weather boards, the Jenkin’s fence system has a classic look to complement the traditional NZ weather board home.

HORIZONTAL FENCES

A recent trend has been towards using timber horizontally rather than vertically. Designers are also experimenting with different materials and profiles such as Kwila decking.

TIMBER SELECTION GUIDE

RECOMMENDATIONS• Do not burn preserved wood

(see disposal information below).

• Wear a dust mask (P1 or better – AS/NZS 1716) and goggles when cutting or handling wood.

• Wear gloves when working with wood.

• All sawdust and construction debris should be cleared up and disposed of after construction.

• After working with the wood wash exposed areas thoroughly.

• Wash work clothes separately from other household clothing before re-use.

• Preserved wood should not be used where it may come into direct or indirect contact with drinking water especially for uses involving incidental contact such as fresh water docks and bridges.

• Do not use preserved wood under circumstances where the preservative may become a component of food, animal feed or beehives.

• Do not use preserved wood for mulch.

• Only preserved wood that is visibly clean and free of surface residue should be used for patios, decks and walkways.

• Do not use preserved wood shavings or sawdust as animal litter.

• Use light spirit based preservative or sealing agent on all cut, notched or drilled surfaces.

DISPOSALPreserved wood may be disposed of in landfills, or burned in commercial or industrial incinerators or boilers, in accordance with local council rules and regulations.

CONSUMER INFORMATION AND HANDLING GUIDE FOR CCA PRESSURE TREATED TIMBERThe Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) preservative used to treat outdoor radiata pine reacts with the wood to form chemical complexes that are highly insoluble and leach resistant. The CCA preservative penetrates deeply into and will remain in the wood for a long period of time. However, some preservative may migrate from the preserved wood into surrounding soil over time and there may also be incidental contact with skin during construction or use.

Building a fence is not difficult. It requires

SLEEPERSThere are a variety of sleepers available with the most common being hardwood, macrocarpa and radiata pine. It is vital to assess if the sleeper application is purely aesthetic in which case any species will do, accepting that untreated sleepers will breakdown over time.
