Brisbane Inner City Rail Capacity StudyBrisbane, Australia

On behalf of the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, PB was part of a consortium that prepared an Inner City Rail Capacity Study. The study examined land use and potential station catchments, and identified new or extended corridors along Brisbane’s inner-city rail networks. The 18-month study recommended three technically feasible options to reduce congestion, encourage TOD, enhance the rail and busway network, decrease the city’s vulnerability to potential future oil shortages, and make the city more livable. Most of the study’s recommendations for stations and TOD development are targeted at older suburbs and underutilized manufacturing districts that are prime areas for redevelopment. The project won a “high commendation award” from Engineers Australia in 2009, and is now known as “Cross River Rail.”

Gwinnett County Unified Plan Gwinnett County, Georgia

Gwinnett County, located 25 miles outside Atlanta, has been one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S. for the past four decades. This unfettered growth has resulted in severe congestion and strains on schools and other social services. PB worked with the Gwinnett County Department of Planning and Development to craft an ambitious, long-range, unified plan and also updated the county’s transportation and housing plans. The plan has been widely praised for its scope and outreach efforts and received the 2009 award for Outstanding Planning Document from the Georgia Planning Association.

Tysons Corner Urban Design and Transportation StudyTysons Corner, Fairfax County, Virginia

PB developed a bold plan to transform Tysons Corner, Virginia from 688 hectares (1,700 acres) of suburban sprawl and automobile dependence to mixed-use, walkable, transit-connected, green urbanism. The plan, which incorporates 75 percent of all growth within walking distance of four new Metrorail stops, envisions 200,000 new jobs, 100,000 new residents, affordable housing, a dense street grid, and a network of parks. An extension of Metrorail is under construction, with landowners contributing up to $400 million. Two major corporations have joined other international businesses in locating their headquarters at Tysons Corner. The innovative plan has been widely heralded as a new model for suburban transformation.

Denver TOD Station Planning

Denver, Colorado

The City of Denver asked PB to create TOD plans for five rail station areas that are part of the region’s ambitious FasTracks transit program. PB led small group workshops with the neighborhoods surrounding each station to develop vision statements, alternatives, and preferred plans that reinforce the unique character and opportunities of each community. The workshops helped build public trust in the process and enabled local residents to support adoption of the plans and new zoning by the Denver City Council.

Yizhaung New TownChina

PB assisted the Beijing Development Authority and the Municipality of Beijing in creating a transportation/land use strategy for the Yizhuang New Town development. Yizhuang is one of six new towns being developed in order to relieve population pressures in Beijing and to promote regional development. PB led a team that provided a strategy and schematic plans that would enable the city to grow from 100,000 to 700,000 in 15 years. An outgrowth of Beijing’s New Urban Development Plan (2004-2020), the plan features a multimodal station that serves high-speed rail, an extension of Beijing’s Metro, a rapid transit bus line, an inner city commuter rail line, and a sustainable land use pattern.

Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ART IC)Anaheim, California

PB is leading the team providing the City of Anaheim with master planning, architectural, and engineering services for the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC). Situated at the juncture of major freeways and between a major stadium and a sports and entertainment center, the transportation hub will accommodate Metrolink commuter rail, Amtrak, and Orange County Transportation Authority buses—and is being designed to accommodate the future needs of California High-Speed Rail and California/Nevada Super Speed Train connections. The intermodal center is envisioned as an iconic gateway for Southern California and the linchpin of a mixed-use activity center including commercial and residential development. ARTIC will be designed to meet the goal of platinum

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Bowden Urban VillageAdelaide, South Australia

For the Land Management Corporation, an Adelaide state government entity, PB was a member of the team that provided a variety of strategic planning, policy assessment, public involvement, environmental, and design services for a master plan for a new community to be built on a 10-hectare (25-acre) former factory site and adjacent underutilized land. The largest planned TOD in Southern Australia, the Bowden Urban Village will provide up to 2,000 new apartments and will transform the existing, mainly industrial cityscape into a mix of residential, commercial, and retail uses.

North Corridor Station Area PlanningMiami, Florida

The Miami-Dade Transit Agency asked PB to develop detailed TOD plans for the areas around the seven stations of the agency’s planned North Corridor Metrorail extension. PB worked with each affected community along the 15-kilometer (9.5-mile) corridor. The new land use plans feature mixed-use, higher-density development that will enhance transit performance and revitalize communities, transforming economically challenged, auto-centered suburbs into lively, pedestrian-friendly urban centers.

State Center TOD PlanBaltimore, Maryland

PB led a team that examined the redevelopment potential of a 45-hectare (110-acre) site in midtown Baltimore that is served by a subway station, a light rail station, and the city’s Amtrak and regional commuter rail station. The proposed redevelopment includes residential, office, institutional, retail, cultural, and entertainment facilities as well as a new hotel and a system of parks and open spaces—all integrated into existing neighborhoods. The TOD plan for the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Maryland Department of General Services and the City of Baltimore was developed with extensive stakeholder input in under a year. PB’s contributions included land use and transportation planning, urban design, market strategy, cost estimating, and community outreach.

I-35 E Corridor Redevelopment PlanLewisville, Texas

A planned widening of I-35 E in Lewisville, Texas, will afford the city an opportunity to improve the character of the highway corridor and develop its potential. PB led a multidisciplinary team that worked with the community and property owners to prepare a market-based redevelopment plan focused on higher land use densities. The plan identifies three catalyst areas within the corridor—each to be implemented to provide tax revenue stability and opportunities over multiple development cycles.

Winnipeg TOD HandbookWinnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

The City of Winnipeg asked PB to outline a TOD strategy to manage growth and improve the livability of the city. PB prepared a handbook that offers guidance on how aligning transit investments with community goals would enable Winnipeg to evolve from auto-dependent sprawl to a more walkable, mixed-use city. In support of the City’s new slogan, “Our Winnipeg–living and caring as if we plan on staying,” PB also evaluated and made recommended changes to policies and codes; and made presentations to policy makers, technical staff, and key stakeholders demonstrating how to implement TOD.
